Windows Process Activation Service is not running

$

Hi Guys,

First of all thanks to you all for giving time to go through this.

I am in a very typical problem here, and need a bit of your help. I am having a machine with below configuration:

Processor: Intel Core i5 @1.6 GHz; Storage: 128 GB SSD, RAM: 8 GB;

I installed a fresh Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit on this machine, then installed IIS 7, then installed SQL Server 2008 R2, then installed all SharePoint Server 2010  Prerequisites from external HDD store, then installed SharePoint Server 2010; then ran the Configuration wizard. I ha no complaint regarding the speed of the machine until I installed SharePoint 2010.

Post installation and configuration I got the default SP Page launched. Then I restarted the machine. Here from the problem starts. Find below the issues -

1. It took 1 hr 15 mins to get restarted an show me the Desktop.

2. Though system got restarted but lots of Services were stopped. Like WAS, W3SVC etc...

I launched the inetmgr, and observed all the application pools are stopped, I gone to start some of them but it thrown - 'Application pools cannot be started unless the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) is running.'

Then I tried check thru EventViewer regarding the WAS Log. but I couldn't get anything logged regarding the same. I did a lot of things to start the WAS but no luck. I tried from the Service list as well but it thrown 'Error:1053...The service is not responded in a timely manner...'.

So now I am standing here being very helpless. Can any one of you please help me a bit in this regard. Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Preetam

I saw a similar thread that was posted two years ago but had no solution.  So I'm hoping someone now has an answer.  I'm importing a site and getting the FatalError: User cannot be found.  Here is a section of my import log.  Anyone have any suggestions or ideas???  I

Does activity through Windows Explorer view get recorded in any way in the IIS logs?

$

We're trying to track down some suspicious activity on one of our web apps involving a large number of downloads in a very short period of time.  The user's id appears in the usage logs, but does not appear to be in the IIS logs.  This raised the question of what SharePoint activity is actually recorded to the IIS logs.

My guess is that any downloads/uploads done through Windows Explorer view would not appear in the IIS logs, as I believe that works through an ActiveX control?  I assume the user hitting the library page should appear in the IIS logs, somewhere.

A follow up question would be: does logging in through ISA server interfere in anyway with what is recorded in the IIS logs?

Thanks in advance for any and all speedy replies!

Missing edit toolbar in enhanced rich text/rich text column in custom list

I am trying to create a FAQ page using a custom list.

I have a Question and a Answer column.

I would like to have the edit text toolbar when adding an answer to a question, and I cannot seem to get it enabled. I can only edit with HTML tags. Every member of the department is supposed to be able to add an answer to the question in the FAQ, and therefore I would like the editing of the text to be as simple as possible.

Is is any way to enable this toolbar?

When I add a Content Editor Web Part in other pages, I get the toolbar, so I dont think it is a web browser complication. I am using IE8 and Sharepoint 2007

Configuration Wizard files

Dear All,

Q: What no. of files does SharePoint create when a SharePoint configuration wizard runs?

Also, In case a configuration wizard fails. Is it possible that we can replace files from a running SharePoint Set-up with a faulty one? If yes, what are the pros and cons to it?

Looking forward for your feedback.

ASP.NET Request timeout when renaming files or folders in MOSS 2007

$

0

We have a MOSS 2007 Farm with 2 Web front end and 1 SQL and 1 admin/search server.

In one particular Site collection we encountered odd timeout errors when users try to rename files or folders.
The EditForm.aspx timouts after 300 seconds and gives an error page after a Edit Item / rename folder action.
After that timeout the folder is renamed to the new name, so it seems to act properly.
The W3WP.EXE process blocks furter communication and after the timout a ASP.NET error is generated on the server where the rename has taken place
The event log displays a warning ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0 1309 event and the application pool is recylced after this event that the request has been aborted
Same case in the web page after enabling extended error logging in web.config.

Stack Trace:

[HttpException (0x80004005): Request timed out.]

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3625; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3634
No communication after the request has been initiated when running fiddler logging.

I suspected it might be a bad masterpage. So I returned to the stock version. no change in behaviour.
This is very bad, because users complains increases here.
Running MOSS 2007 Standard SP2 No hotfixes on 2003 Server 32bits. Disabled all non stock features on this site collection, no luck.

ULS logging mentions this during the rename.

Planned update to MOSS 2007 SP3 to see if this solves matters, but I have a strong suspicion this won't solve this anomaly.

All our other farms and site collections do behave properly, so it's site collection bound

Any clues?

How to prevent downloading files, still check out/check in

My company is still on SharePoint Server 2007. I am a proposal manager and would like to prevent people from downloading files without losing the ability to check them out. There are a couple of people on a very large proposal team that continue to download and circulate drafts through email chains, which of course wreaks havoc on version control. Is there any way to do this? Thanks in advance.

WSS User Profile Editing

$

As far as I can tell, only the user can edit that users profile once it is brought in from a directory service.  Is this true?

My searching on the subject seems to indicate that there are mechanisms for user maintenance in MOSS that are not available in WSS.  Is that true?

We have issues with the information that is coming in from Active Directory, and it is not clear when the issues there will be resolved.  In the meanwhile, I would like to clean up my own side of the street, but am having difficulty.

I am the secondary Site Collection Adminstrator, yet do not seem to be able to edit anyone's profile other than my own, let alone delete or disable users, which is another issue we have.

If anyone can help me out of my rut, I would appreciate it.

Moving a list between site collections and keeping all data/metadata

$

Im currently working on migrating my team's information from one SP site collection (their old site) and into a new site collection.

I have one list which needs moving -  a request ticketing system for the team.

What I want to know is, is it possible to move a list between site collections and keep all the records/columns intact. I've read on different sites that this isn't directly possible, and that the typical methods of moving (I've tried Designer import/export) simply move the aspx. forms- so the actual page, but not the content.

I've tried:

* Saving as a template - for some reason I had a warning message about the content being too big?

* exporting as a spreadsheet - then creating a spreadsheet list - all of the fiels appear as text, which isn't useful as I want to preserve fields wich list people and groups

* as I've said - exporting/importing using a web package via designer.

I'm not very technically minded, so any options which avoid masses of code would be fantastic, but any input is welcome

Is it possible to edit a Document Library Template, and apply that change to existing Document Libraries?

$

I am relatively new to Sharepoint, and the server is MOSS 2007 Standard edition.  I saved an exisiting Document Library as a template, created a site content type and that is great.  However the Document Controller person has requested that we add another column to the libraries, and it has to be applied to all of the Document Libraries.

First I do not know how to edit the template.

Second and most importantly is how do I apply that change to the Doc Libraries?

No workflows running

Hi All, my WSS 3.0 has been running fine but today all my workflows started giving problems. I'd made no changes to the server and no updates have been installed

Whenever I try running a workflow manually it seems to time out - I click "Start" and the page loads for about 10 minutes and then returns to the Start page, gives a time out error or returns to the list page but when I check the workflow it hasn't actually run.

Automatic workflows just don't start at all

I've checked the timer jobs and there are no errors on the statuses. I tried restarting the timer job but no joy. I've also tried clearing the timer cache folder but it hasn't made a difference either.

There's no errors in the eventvwr or the Sharepoint logs

Been looking at this most of the day now and I don't know where to look next so any suggestions welcome!

Thanks

Claire

stsadm import gives FatalError: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: g

Hi,

I'm trying to move a subsite to a site collection by export/importing the site content in SharePoint 2007. I have done this a number of times without real issues. But this time I encountered an obstacle during the import and I can't find a solution for it. When I run an stsadm import command, I get this error:

The import command I'm running is this:

stsadm -o import -url https://myUrl.com/sites/test -filename C:\restore\exportedContent -includedusersecurity -updateversions 2 -nofilecompression

The "FatalError: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: g" occurs right after "Importing File Web Images/yellow.png". Does this mean that the yellow.png was not found? If so, where do I check for the presence or absence of the image file? Please help!

Please Help! Managed to delete a page column, now it is error on every page on the site

I was at "Site Actions - Site Settings - Modify Pages Library Settings". I tried to hide the Description column, as I did not want this to appear on all pages on my site. Now I have managed to delete this column. I have managed to add a column with the same name and settings, but it does not seem that solves the problem. Now I get an error on every page on the site. Is there any way to fix this, without losing a couple of weeks work?

If I have explained badly, please dont hesitate to ask for more details!

Please help, I am desperate!

Edit: It is a parentsite of my site, and this is not touched by my mistake. Any possibility to use something from that site to fix my site?
