After one week trying (three clean installs of SharePoint 2013), I haven't succeed to start "User Profile Synchronization service".

Environment:

• Domain environment with two Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controllers. 
• Fully qualified domain name matches NetBIOS name (domain.com - DOMAIN)
• Two tiers: SQL Server 2014 enterprise on Windows Server 2012 R2, and SharePoint 2013 SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
• I'm using named SQL instance for SharePoint (<SQLSRV>\<SHAREPOINT>), and SQL alias on SharePoint app server.
• All SharePoint prerequisites are installed successfully.
• SharePoint 2013 is installed successfully.
• Hotfix 2760265 is installed (before configuring SharePoint)
• SharePoint is configured successfully

Preparing MySites host:

• MySites web application is created with separate AppPool, and with address https://my.domain.com.
• Certificate used is wild-card cert (*.domain.com), issued by trusted local PKI
• Managed path "personal" is created
• Site collection of type "My Sites Host" is created at root path
• "Self-Service Site Creation" is enabled for https://my.domain.com web application

Farm account permissions:

• Local admin at SharePoint application server
• "Log on locally" at SharePoint application server
• "Replicate Directory Changes" at domain level
• I've even tried with adding farm account into domain admins group :)

After trying to to start user profile synchronization service, service is in "starting" state about 5-10 min, and then returns to "stopped" state. 

ULS log shows the following exceptions:

• ILM Configuration: Error 'ERR_CONFIG_DB'

• UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS post database, will attempt during next return. Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: ERR_CONFIG_DB

• UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS post database, will attempt during next return. Exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Event viewer log:

• Event ID 6398, The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.LMTRepopulationJob (ID <guid>) threw an exception. Unexpected exception in FeedCacheService.BulkLMTUpdate: Region not found..

• some perfnet event id 2004 errors

Troubleshooting:

• I've tried with clearing configuration cache
• Assigning farm account to domain admins group
• Installing form scratch three times, and thousand times from different checkpoints...

I've saw 'ERR_CONFIG_DB' like million times, but never "Started" next to "User Profile Synchronization service". Does anyone has actually succeeded to start this service? :)

I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

P.S. I can't stop asking myself is it was really necessary to develop such complex, problematic, and log-tells-nothing software just for getting user info from AD? Honestly, after more then decade experience as software developer and software architect - I must say I doubt...

While configuring running user profile syn in SP 2013 I got the following error in FIM. I followed the Microsoft article and I am aware of the Replicate Directory Changes permission to be granted to the sync account.

1. The sync account I used was using fine when I configured AD Import before. So I assume the sync account has all the necessary permission.

2.Now I need to support profile photos from AD, So when I tried to configure UP Sync, I got the above error.

3. I realized FIM windows services are using the farm admin account (not the sync account). I guess this is as expected.

So my question is if the sync account doesn't have access , how did it work with AD import before ? is the error related to something else ?  Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

We have to migrate a SP 2010 web application to SP 2013. To tal 34 site collection under 1 web application. Data is only 46 gb. We have to useMigration Suite for SharePoint by Quest.

Now we need few suggestion from real-time experience guy who has done migration through Quest tool.

Basically we want to use quest tool only for site collection upgrade, all previous steps we have plan to do manually.

Our planned steps are:

1. Prepare (This step is not by Quest tool)
   1. Gather information and clean up 2010 farm – Not by Quest tool
   2. Prepare 2013 farm
      1. Install software
      2. Configure service application
      3. Configure farm settings
2. Upgrade databases (This step is not by Quest tool)
   1. Copy databases
   2. Upgrade service application databases
   3. Create web applications and apply customizations
   4. Upgrade content databases
3. Upgrade sites (site collection)
   1. Begining from this stepQuest tool needs to be involved.

Note: we have some doubt that if all service application data can be migrated and reusable or not?

If not reusable then, we have to build particular service application from scratch.

We need your help on the following questions:

1. Is our planning correct that we can do steps 1 & 2 without quest or any third party tool.
2. Only in case of site collection upgrade we can use quest tool.
3. In this case can we migrate all user privilege through quest tool while migrating site collection?

Please help with you real-time experience if our plan is realistic.      

I wanted to understand with the Links database I believe it stores user click events.

What about for anonymous users - does it store their click thru events.

Is there a way to turn this feature  off?

Can we use SSL offloading at the reverse proxy/load balancer with SharePoint Apps/Apps domain (*.mycompanyapps)

If so what specifically needs to be set up in the reverse proxy/load balancer and in SharePoint.

There is no "concept" of Alternate Access Mappings with the App domain I don't believe - so how would the domain be translated from http to https 

After install SharePoint 2013 Service Pack 1 Russian I got the following error (approximate translation from Russian):

on the second box and  first box being appln server and  3rd box being the db server.

Web part is to display some information from SQL Server when user click button.

I have removed Project server instance from my SharePoint 2013 farm. After that when I tried to run the configuration wizard, I found that the old passphrase is not valid.

When I open powershell, the powershell is not connecting to the SharePoint farm. So, I cannot reset the PassPhrase.

What is the best course of action?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Hi All, 

I am in process to upgrade SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013 with all steps as mentioned in TechNet. 

I was able to get all the SP2010 UI in SP2013 environment. However, when I navigated to top level site and clicked on “Site Collection health checks”. In SP2010 environment I never used (as Farm Admin) any Video content type. It belongs to out-of-the-box "digital asset content types" and cannot be deleted.
 

Therefore I changed the name of Video to our department name like "Video - Company" and ran the site collection health check again. This time there was no conflict for content types. 

After ran the site collection upgrade I got following error.

hi,

i am using session objects as  state management in my custom apln pages and custom web parts in my sp web appln.

But the production sp farm would be of network load balanced farm. 2 WFEs and 1  crawler and 1  sql server box.

now i am  having doubt about : if i use the session variable in server1 and implemented the state management concept , and in case of server1 failure , the NLB will immediately switch to server2 and if i enable session on server2 also, will the same session variable  be available in my second server, server2 also?

if not, what should be the approach of implementing state management in sharepoint? i am having few custom web parts and custom application pages wherein i am depending on session state variables to pass information between these pages. 

in the case of NLB implementation on the event of failure , on the production farm on server1, since it switches to the second box, what will happen to my session variables?

There is a request from our customer that the SharePoint 2013 site can be accessed via two log in modes by the same user.

1. Via Custom Web Service which will authenticate and return True, password will not be shared from the web service where as authentication result will be shared. Based on the True status the user should be able to access to the SharePoint site.

2. Via Active Directory Account - using their AD log in id and password

For this request, is it possible to associate the same user through two log in modes.

How this Custom authentication should be set up  ?

Can I create a Sub App Domain, that mean I've a Domain like domain.com and I want to create a App Domain like apps.domain.com. Is this possible? I tested it, but in my enviroment it doesn't work.

I have an external AD domain with no trust. I am trying to set up FBA with AD. This is not involving SQL server but involving the AD directly with account and populating them. Didn't find any helpful info regarding our issue so I opened new topic.

Our client has one site collection with a LOT of custom CT, which they added manually ofc (not from code).

Also, they have a LOT of libraries and documents.

After enabling Document ID Feature the ID was added to some documents (some not) over night (couldn't done it manually for some reason). Then I found that documents, which are not assigned with ID, were holding read-only CT, so after disabling read-only property ID's were added (again over night).

Now for the problem:

Any new document using any CT (even default "Document") not assigning ID at all. I tried to change to different CTs but I got same results. The only way that new documents getting their ID is when I change ID title (from Document ID Settings) to different one, for example from TEST1111 to TEST2222. And again it works only at night, running manually jobs does not seems to assign ID.

Any advise?

I have been doing some work lately trying to set up ADFS but having issues there.  But I did note that when I try to add the Claims Provider to the web app, this same "Object Reference not set to an instance of an object" error so more than likely these are related.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting as the above doesn't really give anything concrete to start with.  I did see one post suggesting an orphaned .xml file?
