AppFabric won't install - tried various solutions

I'm trying to install the prerequisites for SharePoint 2013 (on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1)

Like many others, I'm having troubles installing SP 2013 because the AppFabric part of the prerequisites is not installing.  Unlike others, there is really no error in the log.  After it starts installing appfabric, it shows the finish window, with AppFabric: installation error, and reboots machine.

I have tried:

Altering and then removing the PSModulePath environment variable.

Downloading and running the AppFabric setup using the command window with the appropriate parameters (/i CacheClient,CachingService,CacheAdmin /gac).  Also started up the prerequisite installer from the command line specifying the appfabric setup file.

AppFabric is not and was not installed prior to installation. (it is not available to uninstall).  WIndows update is on, and I have applied all available updates.

Here are the relevant lines from the log:

Hello All,

I need your expert opinion on SharePoint 2013 on running which share point services on what server.

mentioned below are list of all the services and i want to know what services will you recommend to run on WFE and App Server. For example in a server farm with 2 wfe(load balanced)  and 2 app server I will run search on one app and rest of service including CA on second app. what other services can we run on these 2 servers e.g. Distributed Cache etc. and what services should be running on WFE.

I have looked in to many technical diagrams and there are some unanswered question poster as well so I am trying again may be some can pin point and please feel free to use some other topology. Some of the links i have find regarding the same are

Cannot connect to database master at SQL server.

Hi There,

I have installed SQL Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2013. I'm at the point where it has launched the configuration wizard. We get the above error when clicking next at the point of creating my Datadbase Server and name on the Specify Configuration Database Settings and get the error 'Cannot connect to database master at Sql server at XXXX. The database might not exist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it. I tried to investigate this and done the following using previous posted threads:-

  1. Turned off Windows Firewall
  2. Tried local Administrator
  3. Tried domain login
  4. Enabled TCP/IP in SQL Server Configuration Manager
  5. Stop/Started all SQL services and then even rebooted
  6. Ensure that Agent and Browser services were started
  7. I added my domain account at the SQL installation stage so I logon to the server and opened SQL manager and gave my self dbcreator and security and server admin rights
  8. Launched Sharepoint wizard but it still fails with the same error

Is there anything else that I can try? Please help

Regards,

Mao

I have setup and configured Excel Services using the Microsoft technet article.  When I click on an Excel document in one of my Sharepoint document libraries it tries to load the spreadsheet in the browser but receive an error saying "We're sorry. We ran into a problem completing your request. Please try that again in a few minutes."  Any ideas on how to fix this?

SP2013 AppFabric Issue

Hi,

I have an issue with installing the appfabric for SP2013.  I have already check the existing posts and it doesn't seem to apply to what I am experiencing.  To start off, I have a single server (W2K8R2 SP1 x64, SQL 2008R2 SP1).  The prerequisites components all got installed but except AppFabric (see below for the log).  Most of the posts on the web talked about error 1603 but I am not getting this error. Looking at the log below, the part (highlighted) where AppFabric return -1 seems to be the issue.  However, I can't figure out what it means.  I have tried the offline install approach and still get the same error.  Can anyone help?  Thanks

Sharepoint 2013 : Checking Out issues

$

We have an internal SharePoint 2013 server that I am trying to bring online. Internally it works a treat, when accessing externally over HTTP we have an issue when checking out a document. When we go to checkout normally it appears with an error "This document could not be checked out. You may not have permissions to check out the document or it is already checked or locked for editing by another user" The only way we can check this out remotely over HTTP is to view the properties of the file and then selecting check out from there.

Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

I am using Sharepoint 2013 and I am getting the below mentioned error on a daily basis :

The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPProductVersionJobDefinition (ID 1b200a4b-acf4-45ea-8312-6533695b9e8b) threw an exception. More information is included below.

Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute.

I even checked the log file and found the following entry regarding this job :

Sharepoint 2013 : Document Library List

In WSS 3.0 if a user didn't have access to a document library they wouldn't see it listed on the left hand menu. In SharePoint 2013 if a user doesn't have access it still shows the document library on the left menu but they cant see the files or make changes. Is there anyway to make it the same as WSS 3.0 where is isn't listed if they don't have access?

What is the diffrence of not having classic mode authenitcation in sharepoint 2013 by default?

as SharePoint  2013 started to phase out the classic mode authentication. I have a question popping up in my head.

I still see we implement NTLM and Kerberos as the available options for using claims authentication while creating the web application.

so we don't need a IDP provider, is it the default NTLM is used by SharePoint to implement claims.

so if I have to create new SharePoint web app in 2013 and I cant afford extra IDP providers, I decided to go with the default systems what are options available for me.

also when does the identity provides gets enabled in the web application create page.

Any good explanation or reference to a location would be much appreciated...

Hi,

I have the following URL in my  Search Box Web Part - Results Page URL -

~site/_layouts/15/osssearchresults.aspx?u={contexturl}

Although I can guess what {contexturl} means, I wonder if there is any documentation that explains the {contexturl} variable and all the similar variables that I can use in SharePoint web part properties.

Thank you

New SharePoint 2013 Standard installation, single server vm (full sql (not sql express) and SP install on one VM).

3 Web Apps, (:80; :8080; 8088)... 8080 and 8088 load without issue, 80 will not load. I have deleted and recreated the web app and the root site collection to no avail. I have also changed the tcp binding on default web site to :808 (from :80)

Any Ideas?

Move Single Sharepoint Farm Server from domain to another

$

On my laptop I have 2 VM:

1. Widows Server 2008 / SharePoint 2010 / local somedomainX

2. Windows Server 2012 / SharePoint 2013 / company somedomainY

Those servers are single farm servers for development and demo for the clients. The problem with SP 2013 is that when there is no Internet, I cannot connect to the external somedomainY, which is inconvenient.

The question is what can I do to connect my SP 2013 to the somedomainX?

Anonomyous Authentication on an Extended Webapplication

I have a 2013 WebApp that is using NTLM, I extnded it and made the extended application anonomyous.

All of that worked fine, within the site collection I made it accessible by anonomyous and it works fine.

I have

site.company.com    NTLM

anon.company.com  Anonomyous

Then I add a host header to the anonmyous webapp

headeranon.company.com

I am unable to make the extendended webapp anonomyous when I add a host header

I dont see the Anonomyous Option under site permissons, but I see it under the extneded site URL

NOTE: Just when accessing but the host header addition I have issues, it still works fine with the original URL created when

I extended the site

Modify my alert settings is pointing to http:// sharepoint/_layouts/15/Mysubs.aspx

How can I change this to the correct Sharepoint link?

How to Setup SSL Cert for Apps

$

I have followed the directions to configure an environment for SharePoint apps. All went well until I downloaded app and clicked on it where I then get a certificate error.

I trying to resolve my problem, I noticed that the directions tell you plan and buy an app domain (I.e. myspapps.com) and to get a wildcard SSL cerificate and I did (I.e. *.myspapps.com), but the instructions never have you do anything with certificate.

Where is the certificate installed (I assume IIS 7) and where does one set the "binding" for the certificate?

TIA

Problem with Wizard not using FQDN

$

I am running into problems setting up SharePoint and it starts with the installation wizard. Let's say I am configuring a 3-Tier farm and have a server named App1.

In my farm, I want all sites to use port 443 and SSL including Central Administration. When I use the wizard and specify the database, I have no option to set the FQDN. and I get a "default " admin site that is something like: http://App1:<random port #>. I can set the port number but that's not the real problem. The real problem is that the wizard uses http://App1 and NOT http://App1.mydomain.com.

Now I can change the bindings/site address to the FQDN after the install and use port 443, but the original name "App1" is hard-coded/stored somewhere.

The problem arises when I try to run an update and then re-use the wizard to try and get the updates to actually be run on all the various databases (why the updates don't actually install themselves fully is a whole other issue). The wizard perpetually resets the administration site to the netbios name format (http://App1:<port#> and RESETS the appropriate FQDN (https://App1.mydomain.com). Additionally, various links in SharePoint seem to get hard-coded the short format too. The problem is that the sort format should NEVER be valid in my farm becase certificates require the proper FQDN. I ALWAYS want SSL!

HOW DO I GET THE WIZARD TO USE MY FQDN? HELP! PLEASE!

Install Guide Using Actual Best Practices

$

Okay, I have been trying for months (granted on and off) to get SharePoint setup and configured properly. I have actual on-premises licenses and not trials versions.

I want a 3-Tier farm and have found numerous installation guides. For example, I have found these:

Install SharePoint 2013 across multiple servers for a three-tier farm

Test Lab Guide: Configure SharePoint Server 2013 in a three-tier farm

The Test Lab Guide is more valuable to me because I do need to setup SAML and Single Sign-On as well as eventually getting Business Intelligence configured.

My problem is that every guide I find violates Best Practices and all, essentially, have disclaimers indicating they are not fully complete or appropriate for a production environment. Are there any guides that actually use Best Practices and/or are appropriate for a production environment? I am particularly looking for guides where the correct accounts are setup as this link describes:

SharePoint 2013 Service Accounts Best Practices Explained

I am looking for something that, at least, follows the "medium security" described. Every time I follow one of the official guides I get bit in the @ss later because the permissions are so mangled: upgrades don't install properly, warning messages fill the logs, websites don't work correctly, etc. ... OR ... the farm is highly vulnerable for accounts not following least privileged principles.

Is there at least one guide that demonstrates setting up a 3-Tier farm that DOES follow a reasonable level of "Best Practice"?

When list item deleted, permission removed as well

I have a list.  When a item is created, the workflow will assign unique permission to this item.

When the workflow finishes all steps, it will delete this item.

My question is when this item gets deleted, the unique permission associated with this item will be deleted from the database as well? Or I need to manually delete permission before delete this item.

I checked the list permission, I can see 2000 user names with limited access.  There are only 80 active items in the list. The threshold for unique permission is 50000.
