Install Guide Using Actual Best Practices

$

Okay, I have been trying for months (granted on and off) to get SharePoint setup and configured properly. I have actual on-premises licenses and not trials versions.

I want a 3-Tier farm and have found numerous installation guides. For example, I have found these:

Install SharePoint 2013 across multiple servers for a three-tier farm

Test Lab Guide: Configure SharePoint Server 2013 in a three-tier farm

The Test Lab Guide is more valuable to me because I do need to setup SAML and Single Sign-On as well as eventually getting Business Intelligence configured.

My problem is that every guide I find violates Best Practices and all, essentially, have disclaimers indicating they are not fully complete or appropriate for a production environment. Are there any guides that actually use Best Practices and/or are appropriate for a production environment? I am particularly looking for guides where the correct accounts are setup as this link describes:

SharePoint 2013 Service Accounts Best Practices Explained

I am looking for something that, at least, follows the "medium security" described. Every time I follow one of the official guides I get bit in the @ss later because the permissions are so mangled: upgrades don't install properly, warning messages fill the logs, websites don't work correctly, etc. ... OR ... the farm is highly vulnerable for accounts not following least privileged principles.

Is there at least one guide that demonstrates setting up a 3-Tier farm that DOES follow a reasonable level of "Best Practice"?

High Trust Configuration to Support On-Premises App Domain - Trying to Get Single Sign-On

$

I am trying to setup a SharePoint website that supports adding SharePoint apps to that website. I started by following these instructions:

Configure an environment for apps for SharePoint (SharePoint 2013)

NOTES from that install:

1) We are using SSL for ALL websites in our farm

2) All websites (besides built-in) use port 443 including the central admin site

3) We use host headers so sites can share port 443 on the same IP Address

4) We have two domains: (1) is https://portal.mysite.com (for internal and external users), and (2) How to: Create high-trust apps for SharePoint 2013 using the server-to-server protocol (advanced topic)

That topic is too vague. It is not really clear which certificate to use, or what domain to use (which domain issuer). It really doesn't do what I need: step-by-step get a website trusting an application so the credentials are auto-passed and two or more login prompts are not necessary. The "devil" (so-to-speak) is always in the details and this is driving me crazy.

Hello,

Im trying to migration a Sub-Site from 2010 to an new 2013 Server. I have already done a Database-Attach-Upgrade. So I have a working WebApplication with an Upgraded-SiteCollection including my Sub-Site. But I want the SubSite "Development" in an another WebApplication in a new SiteCollection. So I already tried it with export/import-spweb. But this overwrites creation date und users. My Idea was to move this site to an new SiteCollection within that WebApplication do a Backup and Restore that Backup on my new SiteCollection.

Possible?

I've setup alerts but when the users receive the alerts all the links are wrong.

For example

The Home link is pointing to http: //sharepoint

Modify my alert settings is pointing to http:// sharepoint/_layouts/15/Mysubs.aspx

How can I change this to the correct Sharepoint link?

April Cumulative Update fails due to MySite issue

Hi there,

We installed the April CU on a 2013 farm and the update failed.  The error log indicates we experienced the same issue outlined here on Trevor Seward's blog:

http://sharepoint.nauplius.net/2013/05/sharepoint-2013-april-2013-cumulative-update-fails/

If I try run the Products Config Wizard again it only gives me a repair option.  If I look at the Database Upgrade Status, the MySite DB needs to be upgraded still.  How should we continue?  Should we create the "Personal Documents" folder under each MySite and then run upgrade-spcontentdatabase against the MySite DB?

thanks

Issues setting up S2S trust between Exchange and SharePoint 2013

I have Exchange 2013 and SharePoint 2013 installed and I'm trying to setup trusts between them both.

I've got the trust successfully created on the Exchange side using:

cd c:\'Program Files'\Microsoft\'Exchange Server'\V15\Scripts
.\Configure-EnterprisePartnerApplication.ps1 -AuthMetadataUrl https://<HostName>/_layouts/15/metadata/json/1 -ApplicationType SharePoint

On the SharePoint side though, when I try to run:

New-SPTrustedSecurityTokenIssuer -Name Exchange -MetadataEndPoint https://<Exchange Server Name or FQDN>/autodiscover/metadata/json/1

I get this:

New-SPTrustedSecurityTokenIssuer : Exception of type
'System.ArgumentException' was thrown.
Parameter name: newObj
At line:1 char:1
+ New-SPTrustedSecurityTokenIssuer -Name "Exchange" -MetadataEndPoint
https://trek ...
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidData: (Microsoft.Share...rityTokenIssuer:
   SPCmdletNewTrustedSecurityTokenIssuer) [New-SPTrustedSecurityTokenIssuer],
   ArgumentException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell.SPCmdletNewTrust
   edSecurityTokenIssuer
ULS logs and Event logs give me nothing.
Side note: There are differences in the TechNet documentation between Exchange and SharePoint documentation. Exchange lists the autodiscover URL correctly at: https://<Exchange Server Name or FQDN>/autodiscover/metadata/json/1 and SharePoint lists it incorrectly at: https://<HostName>/metadata/json/1
SharePoint 2013 conversion from MSDN license to fully purchased license
I am seeking to apply a fully licensed product code on a SharePoint 2013 MSDN in the 'change farm license type' in central admin, but the area to add the product code is inaccessible.
Is it possible to upgrade a MSDN install without full re-install of SharePoint 2013?
please advise me on this.
thanks
SP 2013 - Search working internal but not external
$
We have a Sharepoint 2013 Server which can be reached internal and external via TMG. If a user search internal for elements inside a site collection they got a result. If the same user use the external url to search inside the same site collection no result is then shown (but also no error message). All the other stuff like downloading or uploading files from internal AND external is working. So currently only search seabed to be affected.
w3wp.exe error When Trying to Add an App into SharePoint 2013
When I try to add any App (in this case Form Library App) from Site Contents, I receive an error message on our SharePoint 2013 Server.  On the browser side, it just hangs after I enter a name and click "Create".  Then after a few minutes, it asks for my login credentials, I enter it, and it eventually errors out on the client side as well.
We are running SharePoint 2013 on Windows Server 2012 (64-bit)
It is an On-Premise setup
We are using a local SSL certificate
We have Office Web Apps, and it appears it is working properly
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?
SharePoint 2010 to 2013
$
Hi,
this is my first post here. I'm planning the upgrade of Sharepoint 2010 to 2013. I know I will use the database-attach method. In my scenario, we also have to change the whole security, design and clean up unused sites. The clean up process will takes weeks (maybe months) so I have to do a granular upgrade. We have 70 sites.
At the end, the new farm will have the same URL. I wondering if I should do a copy of production farm, do the clean up site by site and copy the database to the new farm 2013. If I do that I know I will have to redirect the site done to the new farm URL. The DNS host entry can only have one IP so I have to configure an alternate access mapping. I have issue now to load site collection with alternate access mapping. I mean it works for the top site page but not for other site collection.
I didn't find information about people doing the same. Is it a nice plan? Any suggestion or better plan?
Block Term store management tool for all users except SharePoint Admins
Hi,
I am the administrator of my companies SharePoint 2013 portal. I have setup global navigation using the Term Store Management Tool. Some users who have contribute permission on site cannot access Site Settings but if they know Term store URL, they can open it and play with the menu system. This is something we cannot allow users to do. Please let me know some way to block the TSMT for all users except the SharePoint Admins.
Thanks in advance.
Migrate Users Claims to SAML
I currently have a web application configured as claims using Windows Authentication and users are displayed as "Claim|Domain\Username".  If I add a trusted Identity provider to the same zone for SSO I can add users to SP and they appear as"Claim|TrustedIdentityProvider|Username" and Single Sign On is working.
Is there a way to migrate all the existing users to the provider to retain security?
Sharepoint online not setting user profile person property
$
Hello,
When I attempt to set any user property that is of type person (e.g manager) in a user's profile, after I click the check names button, instead of confirming the name, it clears the field. If I try to search for the name, it isn't able to find it. I know the user I am trying to set the value to exists and has a profile in SharePoint.
To add more info, if I attempt to set the person value to the administrator user it seems to work, but for any other user it clears the field.
Anybody have any idea why its clearing the field instead of setting it?
I don't know if this makes sense, but any help would be appreciated.
SP2013 PerformancePoint report showing error Missing Data Source Provider
Hi,
We have upgraded our SharePoint 2010 installation and moved to SP2013 and SQL 2012, and the sites have all come across OK. Hurray :-)
However our PerformancePoint charts and web parts are proving more of a problem than the entire migration.
Following instructions a number of threads we have now been back and installed the PowerPivot tools on the SharePoint 2013 server, and run the configuration tool.
However, still no joy, and not much support information to help us.
Has anyone come across this error / or have any suggestions we can try?
Many Thanks
Ruth
Migration to 2013 from 2010 mysite feed shows HTML
We are testing the upgrade to 2013 from 2010 and have completed the database upgrades in the new farm.  Everything works, however when you click on someone elses mysite the activity for that person displays as HTML.  i.e.
<a href=http://mysite.company.com:80/person.aspx?accountname=DOMAIN%5CUSERNAME title="JOHN DOE">John Doe</a> added 4 new colleagues.<br/><a href='http://mysite.company.com:80/Person.aspx?accountname=DOMAIN%5CJane Doe'>Jane Doe</a>, etc.
Anyone know how to fix this?
