Is it better to migrate or start with brand new User Profile Service Application for 2010 to 2013 migration?

I am migrating from a 2010 environment to brand new servers on a 2013 farm and I am wondering about UPS. Is it better just to start fresh or migrate the databases for UPS from 2010?

Pros/Cons

FYI - All of the MySites for people are hosted on another farm in a different domain. That might be an important factor.

Thanks for your guidance in advance!

Greetings,

I'm unable to generate a new key in the Secure Store Service Application (SSSA). I haven't faced this issue in my SharePoint 2010 farm.

I have a SA created for this service application, configured it as a managed account in CA and used it to setup the SSS. I am logged into the CA as a farm admin while I'm attempting to generate the new key. I have tried the following which haven't worked for me.

1) Added the sa as a farmadmin account and the SSSA managed account as local admins to both the application server and the database server.

2) Added the sa account to the administrators group of the SSSA and given it full control

3) Given the sa account all access to the SSSA database on the SQL server.

The error I am getting is 'An error occurred during the "Generate Key" process. Please try again or contact your administrator. '. In the event viewer I see the following error

'The Secure Store Service application Secure Store Service Application is not accessible. The full exception text is: User does not have permission to perform the operation.'

I have the August CU installed on this server. This is the first time I am trying to setup this manage application on a SharePoint 2013 environment using the same steps that have worked successfully in the SharePoint 2010 environment. I am open to ideas and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Seeking SPSite and SPWeb Detailed Explanation

Good afternoon. I am using SharePoint 2013 in a hybrid environment. On the on-prem side, I need to develop a PowerShell script that creates a CSV file containing the following information for each site within a site collection:

1. Site URL
2. Name of entity (individual user, SharePoint Group or Active Directory Security Group) with access to site
3. Whether entity is an individual user, SharePoint Group or Active Directory Security Group
4. Level of access entity has to site
5. * Username, First Name, Middle Initial and Last Name of entity

* If the entity is a SharePoint Group or AD Security Group, these fields will contain data associated with a member of that group. For example, if a SharePoint Group that has access to a particular site contains 3 users, the CSV file will include 3 rows - one for each member of the group.

I developed a test script that uses Get-SPWeb to display users and groups that have been granted access to a site collection. I suspect that I will need to modify the script to pipe the Get-SPWeb result to a Get-SPSite cmdlet. However, I do not understand the architecture of SPSite or SPWeb objects well enough to do this.  I have reviewed https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.spsite.aspx and https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.spsite.aspx, but I'd like to review some background material that contains more details. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you.

Cannot install SharePoint 2013 with SP1 on server 2012 R2. IIS configuration error

Hey Guys,

I'm experiencing a problem which seems to be common considering the number of posts I've found about it, but none of the provided solutions worked for me.

I'm simply trying to install SharePoint 2013 with SP1 on a Windows Server Standard 2012 R2.

I've downloaded from the MS Volume Licensing website the "SharePoint Server 2013 with SP1" ISO file :  SW_DVD5_SharePoint_Server_2013w_SP1_64Bit_English_MLF_X19-36118. Sothis is the slipstreamed version which is supposed to bring compatibility with 2012 R2.

As I do not have direct access to the Internet I need to perform an offline installation. I also downloaded all prerequisities. When I run prerequisiteinstaller.exe with the necessary arguments, I get the following :

(Full log file is below)

I've tried the following :

- Restarted the server multiple times
- Manually removing/adding IIS role + restart
- Running the prerequisiteinstaller.exe from the DVD or from an extracted version
- Manually installing the prerequisities
- Installed .Net 3.5 as recommended here (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0b597d35-b02d-4236-894d-38efc0c7c6f6/sharepoint-2013-with-sp1-install-on-windows-server-2012-r2?forum=sharepointgeneral)

None of the worked. So I'm stuck and I must completed the installation of this before the end of the week for an important project !

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

this is the complete log file :

Check Permission Option not showing User Permission in SharePoint 2013 Migrated site/Web Application

Hello all,

Recently we migrated web Application from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013 ,

High level steps performed.

1. Created Claim based web Application in SP2013

2. backup and restored SP 2010 Content DB in SP 2013 SQL Server instance.

3. TestSPContent DB and MOuntedSPContent DB in SharePoint 2013 web App.

4. Converted classic to claim web App as per MS guidelines.

PS script used:

$WebAppName = "http://sps2013"

#THIS SHOULD BE THE ACCOUNT THAT IS RUNNING THIS SCRIPT, WHO SHOULD ALSO BE A LOCAL ADMIN
$account = "domain\administrator"

$wa = get-SPWebApplication $WebAppName

Set-SPwebApplication $wa -AuthenticationProvider (New-SPAuthenticationProvider) -Zone Default
# this will prompt about migration, CLICK YES and continue

#This step will set the admin for the site
$wa = get-SPWebApplication $WebAppName
$account = (New-SPClaimsPrincipal -identity $account -identitytype 1).ToEncodedString()

#Once the user is added as admin, we need to set the policy so it can have the right access
$zp = $wa.ZonePolicies("Default")
$p = $zp.Add($account,"PSPolicy")
$fc=$wa.PolicyRoles.GetSpecialRole("FullControl")
$p.PolicyRoleBindings.Add($fc)
$wa.Update()

#Final step is to trigger the user migration process
$wa = get-SPWebApplication $WebAppName
$wa.MigrateUsers($true)
$wa.ProvisionGlobally()

5. once done we converted web app and site collections into visual upgrade.

6. After visual upgrade we observed that for some users it is not showing Permissions in Check Permission Option which is available at permission option of ribbon bar.. even though they have read/contributor permission , user account is converted in claim based by seeing some extra char. i:0#w| are added before user name

7. any idea why this issue occurring  ?

Thanks

Regards,

Santosh K.

PurgeNonImportedObjects - purging system account profiles

Hi,

We noticed that some users are not being deleted from UPS. I checked the list with GetNonImportedObjects and found those users in the list. But the list also contains some system users such as 'SPFarm', 'SPSearch', 'SPAppPool' and some FBA users accounts. We would like to delete only users account with PurgeNonImportedObjects, but I am not sure about marking for deletion (bDeleted = 1) those system and FBA user accounts.

Is it safe to mark for deletion system accounts from UPS with PurgeNonImportedObjects?

Is any way to mark for deletion only certain orphan user's accounts?

Thanks

Unable to add new synchronization connection

Getting following error while adding new synchronization connection

The HTTP service located at http://[ServerName]:5725/ResourceManagementService/MEX is unavailable. This could be because the service is too busy or because no endpoint was found listening at the specified address. Please ensure that the address is correct and try accessing the service again late

I can populate the containers successfully on the page but when I press OK it comes up with above error.

If I try http://[ServerName]:5725/ from browser, it works but confirms that help isn't available. So I tried enabling MEX endpoint in configuration file (Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Service.exe.Config) but didn't work and said

Another ContractDescription with the Name: IMetadataExchange and Namespace: http://schemas.microsoft.com/2006/04/mex has already been exported.

which implies that the service is enabling the MEX endpoint.

Trying http:// [ServerName]:5725/ResourceManagementService/MEX from browser ends up in

400 Bad Request.

I can confirm that FIM service is in running state (in fact restarted on multiple counts).

Update: Following is from ULS Logs

LoadConnections failed trying to fill the connections list. Most likely during RetriveResources because of permissions --- System.ServiceModel.ServerTooBusyException: The HTTP service located at http://[ServerName]:5725/ResourceManagementService/MEX is unavailable. Unable to write SPDistributedCache call usage entry

For some time now, I have had silent problems showing in my ULS Logs for a SharePoint 2013 Farm:

Unable to write SPDistributedCache call usage entry

Unable to write Service Call Usage entry

At first, I was concerned there was a problem with access to DistributedCache, and / or logs were full or disks were running out of space, etc.

I reset config cache on all WFE's as instructed and the errors persist.  What can I do to resolve these errors?

Blob Cache Issue SharePoint 2013 with SP1

Hi Friends,

I am facing a strange issue with blob cache, may be. For some reason "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application" service was hung. I have to stop it. As we know once it stopped it is going to remove all off the Web app from the server. I did restated the service and all Web App came online. Now here the problem started, I have 7 web apps based on the major category, one of them is publishing where Image renditions stopped working. I did enabled blob cache, however no use and did not help. What I did was, I have failover farm. I dismantled one server from failover and added to the active farm. However the same issue with that server as well. I did reconfigured the DS topology and search topology safely and successfully, looks to be!. BUT, below message did not go away.

"The blob cache is not enabled in this web application. Image renditions will not be generated until the blob cache is enabled. For information on turning on the blob cache, please review the product documentation."

All over logs below is the error I see

Failure when fetching document. 0x80070012

4 - WEF's

4 - APP's

2 - DB Servers (With Windows failover)

SharePoint Server Ent with SP1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Chinna

First off Not finding the Blob Cache folder itself no matter enable or disable the blob cache

Extending an existing SharePoint 2013 application(on-premise) to external users

Hi,

I want to give access to external users (not in domain/Active Directory) to access one of my intranet application(on-premise , internet facing, claims authentication) sub-site. My client wants to give individual username & password to each individual external user, so that they can login and upload document in the application.

I explored on internet and found that we have to add an external account in AD, but in my case it's not allowed. I looked for forms-based authentication, but there are two options:-

1) Either I extend my existing claims authentication application to forms-based authentication - "I don't know whether it can be done. If yes, please suggest a procedure"

OR

2) Create a new form-based web application, but in this case how external users will access data which is present in first web-application ?

Please suggest a suitable way of achieving this scenario.. Any help would be highly appreciated.

COMPATIBILITY RANGE MISMATCH the Web server and database after applying SP1

Hi, I am getting the below error after applying SP1 on my Sharepoint 2013 environment.

There is a compatibility range mismatch between the Web server and database "WSS_Content_Sites_8", and connections to the data have been blocked to due to this incompatibility. This can happen when a content database has not been upgraded to be within the compatibility range of the Web server, or if the database has been upgraded to a higher level than the web server. The Web server and the database must be upgraded to the same version and build level to return to compatibility range.

I have checked the build version and it looks correct

Sites are opening fine. Upgrade status looks fine to me as well.

Any guesses?

Unable to access sites during a SharePoint DR test

Hello,

Our company does not have hot DR site for our SharePoint environment.  So we are using the process to restore the data to our DR site:

1) Create all site collections in DR pointing to the same ContentDatabase name as it's counterpart in production (example if: http://prodsite/teams/team1 was pointing to PRD_ContentDB3 then we setup http://drsite/teams/team1 to point to PRD_ContentDB3 on the DR SQL Server).

2) Detatch and then delete the databases created in #1.

3) Restore production databases to the DR SQL Server.  Update all security on the databases to match production, but using the DR accounts.

4) Ran Powershell to re-attatch the database to SharePoint.

We are setup with CLAIMS authentication.

Once the restore was done, we could not connect to the sites that existed in production.  Every site returns an error: "**Sorry, something went wrong.  File not Found**.  If I create a new site collection in a new content database it works fine.  If I create a new site collection in a DB from prod it works, but anything that existed in prod will not work (including the root).

We have a DB alias setup that matches production (except points to the DR SQL server).  Has anyone else had this before?  Have I missed a step somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

FBA users in UPS Non-Imported Objects

Hi,

We have extended Web application that uses FBA authentication. FBA users can not access UPS and see "My settings" then accessing My Sites.

We use users synchronization import from AD but when quering Non-Imported objects (GetNonImportedObjects) we found existing FBA users (about 12 of 500) in the list.

I tried to access sites and My sites with test FBA user but test user never gets to Non-Imported objects list.

Any idea how FBA users gets to Non-Imported objects?

Thanks

SharePoint 2013 UPS

Hello Friends,

I'm working on a User Profile Issue and come across a very unusual issue. The destination domain, has opened port 53 and 389 to resolve the LDAP and DNS queries. With this configuration, I can even run ldp.exe and LDAPCP (codeplex). However, when I configuration the UPS Connection to this domain, the OUs get populated but gives me strange error : "Unable to process Create message". The reason I say strange is because I've tried all the troubleshooting steps mentioned in some of the articles and blogs. Nothing seems to work. Any idea how I can troubleshoot this issue?

Regards,

Srikanth
