Limitations of SAML claims based authentication in SharePoint 2013 ?

$

The following page : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh706161%28v=office.14%29.aspx mentions that these features do not work with SAML claims authentication in SharePoint 2010:

Search Alerts
SharePoint Server 2010 Explorer View
Claims to Windows Token Service (C2WTS)
InfoPath Forms Services
Search crawling

I could not find any documentation regarding this on SharePoint 2013. Does anyone know if all of these limitations still apply for SAML claims authentication in SharePoint 2013 ?

Thanks,

Mario

Hello Experts,

Please quick clarification here, when designing a SharePoint 2013 disaster recovery with SQL Server always on async replication with manual failover. Can the DR site be considered hot/warm/cold standby?

Also, can the DR farm be running side by side in read-only with the primary site and the in the event of a downtime at the primary site using the DNS redirect users will be redirected to the DR site?

In SharePoint 2010 environment, We have created the retention rules based on custom data fields, however they are not triggering due to the below mentioned OOTB Timer Jobs are scheduled to run weekly once. We are planning to change the schedule of these timer jobs to run daily instead of weekly -

  • Expiration Policy
  • Information Management Policy

Questions:

1) Seeking your guidance to know more about impact on the current farm - SharePoint 2010

2) Also, we would like to know whether we'll be having the ability to change timer job frequency, if we move to SharePoint 2013 (Office 365) in future

Thanks & Regards,

Hello,

When I click on a news or an announcement on the web page with the News and Announcement web part, the title of the dialog box for the news item says "News and Announcement".  Is there a way to change this?

No backup history was found. Choose a different directory path.

I have made a number of backups of service applications using PowerShell -

e.g.

Backup-SPfarm -Directory "//SP11/SPCA_Backups" -BackupMethod Full -Item  "Farm\Shared Servicess\Shared Services Applications\Secure Store"
Backup-SPfarm -Directory "//SP11/SPCA_Backups" -BackupMethod Full -Item  "Farm\Shared Services\Shared Services Applications\PowerPoint Conversion"
Backup-SPfarm -Directory "//SP11/SPCA_Backups" -BackupMethod Full -Item  "Farm\Shared Services\Shared Services Applications\PerformancePoint"

All seems fine - the backups are visible in the SPCA_Backups folder - however when I go to SPCA backup and restore - view backup history - nothing shows - just the line in the title: No backup history was found. Choose a different directory path.

I've checked the spbrtoc file and the path is correct - just SPCA can't see any of the backups

As things stand this makes my backups useless -

Can anyone help?

Hi - Can someone explain the difference between a Claims Provider and a SPTrustedIdentityTokenIssuer?

They have different PowerShell cmdlets e.g. Get-SPTrustedIdentityTokenIssuer  vsGet-SPClaimProvider

If this can be explained in plain English that would be great

Awesome in fact

My Site Cleanup Job Sends Invalid URL Link to Managers

$

The My Site Cleanup Job sends a default email to managers 14 days prior to an employee's My Site deletion by default. This email includes a link to the departing employee's My Site, where the respective manager who receives the email is made secondary site collection administrator.

The link embedded in the email doesn't work. This link is of the format: http://<root url>/my/personal/username. Upon clicking on it, the manager(s) see the 'Something Went Wrong' message page.

Note that the http://<root url>/my/personal/username/default.aspx link works for that very same manager.

Is this a bug? I know we cannot edit the email message from the cleanup job, but it is sending an invalid URL for a first time login user - we use Windows Auth and Claims.

Thanks.

The search text box for a list view returns wrong results

$

Hello,

I have list in SharePoint 2013 and I am using the search box for users to type in keywords and find records in the view.  However, the search results are not returning correctly.  The list has a employee names and job titles.

I have noticed that when I modify a record in the list, and then I search, all records in the list return those records that I modified.  For example, I modify 5 records with names like Chris, Bob, Mary, Steve, John and Tricia, and I search for Paul, all of these records are returned, plus my name.  The search is using the "modified by" field to return the results.

Also, I type in a job title or department and most of the results are returned correctly, but some odd records appear that don't have the keyword that I typed in the search text for the view.

Any ideas on how to get correct search results with a view?

Thanks,

Paul

Able to login with Farm account but no other user in AD will work

Dear All

I have a SharePoint 2013 installation. It was happily running until suddenly users were unable to get in and I was unable to get in to SharePoint Central Administration. Errors being reported in Event View were user authentication failed due to username coming from an untrusted domain.

This has baffled our networks team as everything seemed fine and communication between the servers was fine.

I did some testing and eventually found that the Web server was unable to establish an ODBC connection to the SQL server hosting the content databases. The problem appeared to be the SQL logins had become broken. I resolved this by simply logging on to the SQL server as the SQL logins and then login to SQL Server Management studio using Windows authentication. this then seemed to "fix" the untrusted domain errors and I could get in to SharePoint.

However I have 8 sub sites and I can get in to each of them ok but only by using the Farm account. any other account I use simply does not authenticate. There is now nothing appearing in the Event Viewer so I have no indication as to what to look at next. The users all have permissions to the SharePoint subsites as it was happily working before so by all rights it should work.

Can anyone suggest any ideas as to what I can check to try and resolve this please?

Kindest regards

Simon

SP2013 User Profile Exclusion Filter for Users - exclude inactive accounts

On my User Profile Sharepoint 2013 Exclusion Filter for Users, I currently use  both filters "userAccountControl bit on eqauls 12" OR "userAccountControl Bit on equals 17" however, inactive accounts employees that no longer in the company are still included in the import. Any idea? Are there any filters missing?

LDAP users

SharePoint Foundation 2013 box connected to LDAP using FBA/ Claims. Most of the time, I can see LDAP users in PeoplePicker. But every now and then, they simply disappear.  And then reappear after some time.
I have this error message in the event viewer:
An exception occurred when trying to issue security token: The security token username and password could not be validated..
But I don't know for sure that they are related.

How do I troubleshoot this? I have the LDAP connection string and userId and password.

Profile Photo Import/Export with AD

$

I have a slightly complex scenario.  We have an old SharePoint 2007 server that we used for a corporate directory that wasn't set up by me.  The person who did is gone.  Synchronization was setup such that one could upload a photo in their profile there, and that photo began propagating to all presence enabled applications like Outlook and Lync.

It's my understanding from some reading that those photo's were synced with AD, and that's where Lync and Outlook pull them from.

1. is that correct?

I did pull up the attribute editor in active directory users and computers, and I do see data in the thumbnailphoto section for my profile, which has a working picture when I open Outlook or Lync.

Next, we have a new SP 2013 server we built for a new project for Business Intelligence Reporting.  I successfully setup the UPS and synced.  In my profile there I see all of my AD data except the photo.

On the new SP 2013 server, I followed instructions on how to go in to Manage User Properties, picture attribute, and add the property mapping for my domain, thumbnailphoto, direction = import.

I then ran a full sync of the UPS, but I still don't see my photo.

2. Is direction "import" the correct direction to try to get my existing photo from AD?

3. If I want to start using this new SP 2013 environment to be authoritative for these photo's, can I add both an import and an export mapping for this property in the same configuration?

4. If I can add both import and export, what happens if there is a conflict with a photo uploaded into the sp 2013 environment vs photo's that may still be exporting from the SP 2007 environment?

I'm going to assume they would start overwriting one another in AD unless I disable that configuration in sp 2007, when the various sync jobs execute.

5. Does anyone know where this photo is actually stored in AD?  I find it hard to believe it would actually be inside the AD database but I don't know everything.

Any help is greatly appreciated..

Changing the URL of a Host Name Site Collectoin

Greetz!

I built up an hnsc and now would like to change the URL. I've got a new one in DNS.

My understanding is I need to run only two commands:

$site = Get-SPSite -Identity https://contoso.old

$site.Rename("https://contoso.new")

Is it unnecessary to backup the site and restore it to the new URL? I'm thinking that is only for path based sites but it's not clear from the posts I've read online.

Will the old URL no longer be operative? So if I go to https://contoso.old it won't display a site...just as going to any nonexistent url would do? Or do I need to remove that URL from DNS?

Thanks!

SharePoint Site not honoring AD groups associated to Site Groups

After creating a BI Site in sharepoint we created couple groups with some AD groups on it. When trying to access the new site as one of the member of AD group on the sharepoint site group. We get a message saying " this site isn't shared with you". When I went in a created brand new AD account not a group but an AD account and added the sharepoint site group I was able to log in the site no issues.

Since its Microsoft Technologies we reset IIS and it started working again. Don't wanted to give the same reason to our customer but a more logical one. Can someone help me with this ?

Cache cluster is down, restart the cache cluster and Retry.

Hi,

Time to time we get Cache cluster errors only on APP server in 3 tier environment:

"The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.LMTRepopulationJob (ID) threw an exception. More information is included below. Unexpected exception in FeedCacheService.IsRepopulationNeeded:Cache cluster is down, restart the cache cluster and Retry."

Job is run by User Profile Service Application - Feed Cache Repopulation Job timer job every 5 min. but we face this error just time to time (like 3 errors a day), not every 5 min.

Get-cachehost shows:

HostName : CachePort                    Service Name            Service Status Version Info
--------------------                    ------------            -------------- ------------
APP1.comp.local:22233 AppFabricCachingService UP             3 [3,3][1,3]
WFE1.comp.local:22233 AppFabricCachingService UP             3 [3,3][1,3]

Get-CacheClusterhealth
Shows Healthy = 5.00 for both servers.

Get-CacheHostConfig -ComputerName $env:computername -CachePort 22233
HostName        : APP1.comp.local
ClusterPort     : 22234
CachePort       : 22233
ArbitrationPort : 22235
ReplicationPort : 22236
Size            : 1024 MB
ServiceName     : AppFabricCachingService
HighWatermark   : 99%
LowWatermark    : 90%
IsLeadHost      : True

Service is running on both servers with Farm account. Account is member of WSS_WPG and WSS_ADMIN_WPG local groups.

App and WFE servers were restarted.

Is any way to troubleshoot this, why we get this error?

Thanks

Preserving Document ID after moving documents to different site collection

$

Hi,

We have a single site collection that grew too large and now we're splitting the content to different content databases.

We're mostly using Document ID and saving documents.

From my testing, moving subsite (web) to newly created site (site collection) keeps Document ID in existing documents.

The problem is, I want to start new Document ID count in new site collection while keeping existing IDs untouched.

Here's the thing:

Our ID starts with "ID123". I added some new files and got ID123-111, ID123-112 etc...

So I changed it, without resetting existing documents, from Document ID Settings page (DocIdSettings.aspx) to "NEWID" and rerun both jobs (tried multiple times) only new created documents got new ID witch is exactly I wanted ... BUT

When I created again new documents I got my old ID with "ID123-113". I run dozen times timer jobs but old ID were never changed. So I changed again ID settings to "NEWID2" and rerun timer jobs. Last created documents got new ID but new created documents afterwards  got again "ID123"

Any advise?

Update: Even if I reset all documents with new ID, after timer jobs, all new documents receives old ID ("ID123"). Another thing, some documents got the same ID.

Site behind load balancer - Key not valid for use in specified state

Hi,

I have created a sharepoint application page to access an active end point on ADFS and establish a fedauth session. All works well in single server. But when the page runs behind load balancer with 2 servers, it fails with key not valid for use in specified state exception. Stickiness is enabled on load balancer. verified that.

I had made few changes to config file in microsoft.identitymodel section to accomodate adfs custom login. This included removing securitytokenhandlers and issuertokenresolvers as well. Is this impacting the encryption/decryption in anyway?

Any pointers would help.

Incoming Email Settings for the libraries in My Sites and Personal Sites

$

Hello Friends,

I'm currently working on SharePoint 2013 implementation where My Sites have been configured in a separate web application and personal sites are being stored under same web application.

Ex: My Site Host : http://mysite.abc.com

      All Personal sites: http://mysite.abc.com/Personal/firstname_lastname

These are the challenges I'm facing...

1. I enabled Incoming Emails for one of the document library in My Site host but not receiving emails. (All settings are properly configured, document libraries in other sites (team sites) are getting emails.). I doubt the problem is only with my site template.

2. Incoming Email Settings are not appearing in "one Drive" document library in my personal site( which is "Documents" library in personal site). So I added Email event as stated here and here  and settings are started appearing, but I can enter only email address as other settings are not appearing.  Here also I'm facing the same problem.

Kindly share ideas if any.

Thanks!!
