Hi All,

I have been trying to fix this for days now. I have tried solutions in many articles but to no avail. So while the error message is something you may have seen may times, I just can't find a solution in my case.

This is the error:

And in text just in case the image isn't viewable:

"External Data Refresh Failed. We cannot locate a server to load the workbook Data Model. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook. The following connections failed to refresh: ThisWorkBookDataModel."

What is worse is I have checked the ULS (SharePoint Trace Logs), the Event Viewer Logs and the OWA Logs and I cannot find a specific error that would help pin point the problem.

Excel Workbook

So what am I doing? I have an Excel 2013 workbook and I create an "SQL Server" connection to the AdventureWorksDW database, add a pivot table and a pivot chart, test in in Excel and all works fine.

I save the Excel workbook to SharePoint 2013 and then select "Data" then "Refresh All Connections" and then I get the error in the picture above.

Even more puzzling is I have another Excel workbook that also has pivot tables and pivot charts in the AdventureWorksDW2012Multidimensional cube database in "SQL Analysis Services" and this works fine. Hmmm.

My Environment

My environment is Windows 2008 R2 Server, SharePoint 2013 with the April Service Pack1 and a separate server with OWA2013 SP1. It has an SQL Server 2008 R2 database which has been upgraded to SQL Server 2012.

Data Model Settings

In Excel Services this is set to my server name which is "server-name". As I do not have instances all I can enter is the server name. As this works everywhere else including the workbook outside of SharePoint I do not think this is the problem. But I could be wrong.

Unattended Account

I have set this up for the PowerPivot Services App and Excel Services App.

ODC Connections in Excel

I have tried all 3 authentication modes, Windows, Secure Store ID and "None" which is the unattended account. I have not tried the other connection types, should I?

Not in WOPI

I am not in WOPI mode.

AD Accounts

I have added permissions in the SharePoint Services and SQL Server, and as they work in Excel outside of SharePoint, I do not think it is a permissions issue. I could be wrong of course, but the problem is in one of SharePoint, OWA, AD, SQL Server, Excel, and Windows Server.

Isolate the Error

Below is a list of errors I think are relevant but they do not tell me much. The SharePoint logs are not really giving me an error that tells me what to do and where to do it, or even why it cannot refresh, (perhaps not noticeable by the untrained eye).

Problem with SQL Server Not Analysis Services

So my cube database in analysis services works fine in SharePoint/OWA but not the databases in sql server. This is my best clue but I have no idea what it means. Why would it work with an Analysis Services connection but not an "SQL Server" connection?

It Works Outside of SharePoint

If I run the excel worksheet outside of SharePoint all works fine. When inside OWA this is where the refresh error occurs.

Errors from Event Viewer on SharePoint Server using ULS Viewer

"Failed to create an external connection or execute a query. Provider message: There are no servers available or actively being initialized., ConnectionName: , Workbook:"

"Refresh failed for 'ThisWorkbookDataModel' in the workbook 'http://server...'. [Session: 1.V22.26itT0lx8piNFeqtuGVhN214.5.en-US5.en-US36.98c0e158-9113-46e9-850e-edda81d9ed1c1.A1.N User: 0#.w|ad\testuser1]"

And an error in the ULS under the "Data Model" category:

"--> Check Deployment Mode (server-name): Fail (Expected: SharePoint, Actual: Multidimensional)."

This last error, as it turned out, defined the problem concisely, although I was yet to work out what it meant in some detail.

We are trying to setup SharePoint 2013 and WAC 2013 servers in a test lab that uses HTTPS to communicate, however we're experiencing issues trying to connect to it from SharePoint 2013. We setup the internal and external HTTPS urls on WAC and provide the wildcard self-signed certificate, setting AllowHTTP to false, then rebooted. The bindings on the IIS Site then update to include 443.

However, when we try to create the wopizone on the SP box, using new-SPWOPIBinding -Servername xxx it can't seem to see the server properly. We get:

We've rebooted both boxes and can browse to https://xxx/hosting/discovery fine from the SP box. We've also checked the Certs and tried doing self signed certs for the FQDN instead of wildcards, with no effect.

We can't use HTTP in the test lab for WAC because SharePoint 2013 is using HTTPS. Is this a common issue and has anybody seen a fix for it?

Note: Web analytic service not enabled for the site.

We installed a SharePoint tool on a SharePoint 2013 server, and now the site is down.  One error is happening:

add-spshelladmin : Cannot access the local farm. Verify that the local farm is
properly configured, currently available, and that you have the appropriate
permissions to access the database before trying again.

Prior to installing this tool, the SharePoint PowerShell was working. I am running the power shell with admin rights.  The farm account is still in the local admin group, and its in the WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_V4 group.  All commands and the site were working fine, until we installed the tool.

How can I get the PowerShell Management shell working again?

I have a team site.  All pages are stored in Site Pages.  I added a webpart page called test1.  When I go to the page, I see "test1" to the right of the site icon on the top left side of the page.  How can I remove it or hide it?  I read somewhere that I should go to the document library that holds this page and under properties, edit webpart in maintenence view and make sure that "Webpart page title bar" in the column Open on Page says "No".  I did that and the name of the page still shows up. 

Also, why is it that when I create a new webpart page I can only enter the value for "Name"?  Where do I go to enter the value for "Title" if I want the title of the page to be different than the file name (i.e. what shows up in the URL)?

Security team at my company have done a patch on my server and i found out in central admin that one of the server is not patch. It appear that the following patch is missing on that server in the farm when i look into control window -> view installed update

when i search for KB2863863, it appear to be for SharePoint 2013 foundation server and it part of the MS14-022. Is SharePoint 2013 foundation and server have same patch?

Another thing that confuse me is that on this link http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=34  show MS14-022 have different KB number. 

I want to understand different between MS14-022 all these different KB. I want to make sure the server that missing all the KB installed the same. how do i go about that?

I currently have a approval workflow for announcements. There are two approvers assigned to the workflow with the serial setting. How do I end the approval work process after one of the two persons approve? Currently, if one person approves, I have a "In Progress" status under the status column.

Here is the text-based editor view of my workflow:

Any tips are welcomed. I have found that Nintex released a workflow that addresses this, but I would like to work around that if possible.

Am using SharePoint 2013 Portal to archive massive amount of documents,

for this sake I configured the content database of my site collection to use RBS blobs.

I uploaded documents to the portal and they are stored in the RBS blob file destination , but what I can see is that the actual content databases is growing with the same size , and I can see that the Filestream is considered as a part of the database files ! my question is that using the RBS approach , the content database will increase in the same manner as normal database (without RBS configuration) now what about the site collection content database size limitation (200 GB) , in our case will the RBS filestream file be included in this size limitation or not? I mean the 200 GB limitation will apply for the database that include the filestream assuming that the major increase is not in the mdf file , it is in the filestream file.

I appreciate that any one can help me in this knowing that it is not possible for me to decompose the content database into multiple content databases and that's why I thought of the RBS

I'd like to ask anyone who looks after SharePoint 2013 if they still use an Integrated Anti Virus product? and if they do what product they use?

We currently use 'Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers' but have had a few problems with it stopping and possible compatibility issues.

Is an integrated Anti Virus product still recommended? Relying on the client computers for virus checking? NAP?

My server admin thinks it is possible to setup a new development environment using copies of the Production VMs.

He will rename the SQL Server and Sharepoint vms see below:

Wouldn't I also need to point IIS in the VM to the new DevSharePoint and new DevSQL using the CA, but curently it is looking like the CA points back to the orignal CA and I don't want to remove a server if that is correct?  Also how would I point to the Central Admin Site to the new location?

how can I quickly resolve this?  so I don't impact the current environment with testing new development?

we use WebTemplates that derive from the Teamsite SiteDefinition. In my newly created Webs I want

• the Quicklaunch set to false
• Treeview set to true

Is there anyway where I can configure this for the Webtemplate? I know how to perform this in a Feature, but I would prefer to do this via configuration.

I have installed Feb 2014 CU on my server successfully and running wizard or psconfig upgrade to complete the upgrade throws me with below error

Using psconfig force and clearing cache and re-running wizard help me much. Please help to me to resolve this error.

                   I'm currently working on SharePoint 2013 implementation where My Sites have been configured in a separate web application and personal sites are being stored under same web application.

Ex: My Site Host : http://mysite.abc.com

      All Personal sites: http://mysite.abc.com/Personal/firstname_lastname

These are the challenges I'm facing...

1. I enabled Incoming Emails for one of the document library in My Site host but not receiving emails. (All settings are properly configured, document libraries in other sites (team sites) are getting emails.). I doubt the problem is only with my site template.

2. Incoming Email Settings are not appearing in "one Drive" document library in my personal site( which is "Documents" library in personal site). So I added Email event as stated here and here  and settings are started appearing, but I can enter only email address as other settings are not appearing.  Here also I'm facing the same problem.

Kindly share ideas if any.

I have SharePoint 2013 foundation. Till now I am connecting with sharepoint website with server name. Now I added new AAM url to connect different url. But when I am trying to access with new AAM url. it keep asking me credentials

SPFoundation is the server name.

What I did from my side

1. Added site bindinging in IIS for new url.
2. Also changed DisableLoopbackCheck  Link
3. Updated host file also

Still it is asking for credentials. What next to change? Please help me here.

We see a Status in "Servers in Farm" as Upgrade required for one of the server and at the bottom of the page we get the below message

To get more detailed information about the local upgrade status, run: stsadm.exe -o localupgradestatus .

I have executed the command  in both the servers and  got the same output.

Summary of the file :

[7] content database(s) encountered.

[1] content database(s) still need upgrade or cannot be upgraded.

[28] site collection(s) are contained in the content databases.

[0] site collection(s) still need upgrade.

[47] other objects encountered, [3] of them still need upgrade or cannot be upgraded.

How Should I proceed further . Please help me.

SharePoint 2013 site collection Library ribbon menu is not loading in internet zone. It shows "Working on it..." long time.

But it is working in intranet. Please help to resolve this.
