How can I force delete SharePoint 2013 search service?

I installed Search service using PowerShell.  It failed. I tried to remove the service and only partially removed. Now when i try to remove it again it says I cannot login to the search database - the search database no longer exists.  Is there a way to force delete the service?

OWA not working in some Sharepoint 2013 sites... but not all?

$

I have a SharePoint 2013 farm connected to Office Web Apps, with a number of sharepoint web applications(mostly legacy sites, created before my time here). I have created three new web apps and, when I try to preview documents using OWA (or, in fact, open them or edit them in browser) I get an assortment of errors, from "Sorry, we couldn't open this presentation due to a problem" (PPTX) to "Sorry, there was a problem opening this document" (DOCX).

I can use OWA in the existing web applications - what have I not done properly with the new ones?!

Unable to connect to site collection (website)

Hi

I have just set up Sharepoint Foundation 2013 on a Windows 2012 R2 domain controller.

I have created a site collection and have assigned it a name but am unable to connect to it.

I did this years ago on a 2003 server but cannot remember what I did (and it might not be relevant now...)

After creating the site collection this page is displayed:

Top level site successfully created

http://img537.imageshack.us/img537/9210/e09e0a.jpg

But when I click that link this is displayed:

This page can't be displayed

http://img539.imageshack.us/img539/5084/a7ea1d.jpg

Have I missed a step when doing this?

Just one website (site collection) will be created and used.

Can someone help me with this, please?

Thanks

Delete a feature

I had a bad web part installed in my farm. I deleted in on site collection galley, centeral administration farm solution...Nothing at any UI. When re-deploy the solution, I get an error "Error 1 Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': A feature with ID 15/dd97e1f3-2984-4103-b071-39676f75f430 has already been installed in this farm.  Use the force attribute to explicitly re-install the feature.   0 0 ServerTermstoreNavigation". I run Get-SPFeature, I saw the id. However, when I run stsadm -o uninstallfeature -id dd97e1f3-2984-4103-b071-39676f75f430, I get "Feature with Id 'dd...' is not installed in this farm? I really appreciate if someone can help me clear up this mess. Many thanks.

Only 1 Farm for DR? SharePoint 2013 on VMware vSphere 5.1 with Physical SQL 2012

$

I have found several links to discussions that come "close" to what I'm trying to accomplish, but none of them match exactly.  As far as I can tell, no one else wants to do this.

GOAL

Have full DR with only one SP2013 farm

PROPOSED INFRASTRUCTURE

  • SharePoint 2013 VMs (2 WFE / 2 APP) on VMware vSphere 5.1
  • SQL 2012 SP1 cluster (Always On?) on physical servers
  • Two data centers more than 70ms apart

NARRATIVE

I'm not a SQL guy, so please be kind.

My farm design has adequate High Availability (redundancy / resilience).  I have multiple VMware Hosts, Duplicate WFEs, Coyote Point load balancing (actually round robin, but that's fine), Duplicate APPs (as much as possible) and clustered SQL (in some form).  For HA, I'm all set.

My concern is about Disaster Recovery.

I already know that if I were to virtualize ALL of the servers in my farm, including the SQL cluster, that my mission would be over.  I currently have that configuration with my SP2010 farm and by using VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) I am able to completely fail over (float) to a different data center in less than 10 minutes.  We have chosen to failover manually to reduce unexpected issues, but that's fine.  My exposure to data loss is only 15 minutes, since that's the interval for replication to occur between sites.  That, too, is fine.

With SharePoint 2013, we will be offering SharePoint as a service to a wider audience and are trying to plan ahead for performance.  My SQL folks are convinced that physical SQL is the way to go over the long haul, even though our maximum user load will be less than 2000 users.  I'm not trying to debate that.  I'm just trying to preserve my elegant DR solution.

All of the references I'm finding in webland either reference entirely virtual farms, or require two separate farms with configurations that are manually kept similar.  I want to avoid having a second farm.

If at all possible, I would also like to come in around my 10 minute failover time.

QUESTIONS

  1. Is there any configuration (or technique) that anyone can propose that will allow me to use my SharePoint VMs with a physical SQL cluster (in any configuration) that will allow me to use SRM to float my SP servers to the other data center and have them reference the SQL DBs on whatever SQL server(s) are there?
  2. If the proposed configuration involves manual DB gymnastics, what would those activities entail?  I don't need gory details, but would appreciate enough guidance to pass along to my DBA.

Thanks for your thoughts.  This has a huge impact on my build plan, so I really appreciate your assistance.

Calendar Overlay in Multiple Host-named Site Collections

$

I can get SharePoint 2013 calendar overlay to work normally across multiple site collections if the site collections are path-based, but not if the farm is configured with host-named site collections.  This occurs in both SP Foundation and SP Server.

I have a simple development farm, everything running on a single server.  Server 2012, SQL 2012, SharePoint 2013.  I have a single web application and two host-named site collections, deployed per TechNet guidance:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc424952(v=office.15).aspx

Has anyone else seen this behavior?  Have I overlooked something, or is there a workaround?  This issue has been raised by another, at the following link, but it seems there was some misinterpretation of the problem, and no resolution.

Hello All,

We have a SharePoint Server 2010 farm with SP1. Now we are planning to upgrade it to SharePoint server 2013 farm. Do we need to upgrade our SharePoint 2010 farm to SP2 before SharePoint 2013 upgrade or Can I upgrade directly to SharePoint 2013 farm?

Installing Sharepoint 2013 and SQL Server 2014 with BI

I'm working on a POC with SharePoint 2013 and SQL Server 2014 (both Enterprise edition) - I have two servers (with nothing more than Win2K8 R2 on them) and I'd like to basically enable all BI options (Excel services, powerpivot, SSRS, etc.)   but  having problems understanding the order of installation as well as when I'm installing the same components on both servers.

I'm kind of dense but I've looked over the checklist: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh231687.aspx and still have some questions.

I think I'd like to implement the two tier solution here under the heading "PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 and Reporting Services Two Server Deployment"

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh231674.aspx

If that makes sense, can someone guide me a little in the installation, like:

Server1: install sharepoint but do not configure

Server2: install SQL Server DB and SSAS

Server1: Install "PowerPivot for SharePoint" but do not select "Also install relational database"

etc.

SharePoint 2013 databases Autogrowth settings after deployment

Hi All

I know that SharePoint databases do not inherit auto growth settings from Model DB. I have noticed this after few months after deployment. My question is, can i change the auto growth settings for all SharePoint databases (SharePoint_Config, SharePoint_Admin_Content, ServiceAppsDBs and Content DBs) and its logs now in production?.

Note: All the Content DBs and other DBs have grown in the size because of the usage.

Thanks

Thumbnail not show up on Thumbnail column of Picture Library

$

I migrated a SP2010 site to SP2013 farm. After performed the upgrade, everything is fine but we found a picture library view is not work as expected.

In SP2010 farm, the view have a "Thumbnail" column and shows the shrinked version of pictures. After migrate, the view show up same as old one beside the "Thumbnail" column shows nothing. It is just a blank column.

As a test I create a blank new picture library app, the defautl "Thumbnail" view (.../Forms/Thumbnails.aspx) shows shrinked pictures in boxes. However, when I create a new view, added "Thumbnail" column, nothing show up.

I tested by directly browse the thumbnail path like http://<site url>/PictLib/_t/Chrysanthemum_jpg.jpg. The thumbnail show up!

I checked the Timer job "Upgrade work item" (Processes deferred upgrade work items which were generated during an upgrade. For example, generating thumbnails for upgraded image libraries.) was running daily and last run time is some hours before and the thumbnails still not show.

What else I can check? Many thanks.

Modify SafeControls in web.config using Powershell script leveraging SPWebConfigModification method

Hello,

I found the articles below however I am having difficulty updating SafeControls entry, highlighted from "False to "True" in SP 2013 web.config.  There are other SafeControls entries with key Safe="False".  Please advise.

<SafeControl Assembly="Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=15.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" Namespace="Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages" TypeName="DataViewWebPart" Safe="False" AllowRemoteDesigner="False" SafeAgainstScript="False" />

Powershell script:

# Enable DataViewWebPart

[Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebConfigModification] $config1 = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebConfigModification
$config1.Path = "/configuration/SharePoint/SafeControls"
$config1.Name = "Safe"
$config1.Value = "True"
$config1.Sequence = 0
$config1.Owner = "DataViewWebPartMod"
$config1.Type = 1

#Add mods to webapp and apply to web.config
$webApp.WebConfigModifications.Add($config1)
$webApp.Update()
$webApp.Parent.ApplyWebConfigModifications()

I need to CHANGE my SAML Claims Identity Provider from Siteminder to Okta

$

I went ahead and got specific on the title .... but, the question is a general question actually.

I currently have SAML-provider-A.    I need to move my Sharepoint Claims Webapplication from SAML-A  over to SAML-provider-B.     I THINK that I should be able to simply remove SAML-A TIP and add SAML-B tip and as long as I retain the same TIP-NAME - I think that my profiles shoudl not have to be migrated etc. etc.

When I DELETE the connection for UPA - and reCREATE the connection to AD via the TIP.

My fear is that there is something that will cause the UPA to duplicate the profiles.  But, I dont THINK that'll happen.

Does anybody know?

User lost at /_layouts/15/user.aspx after migrated from SP2010 to SP2013

We have migrated some sites from SP2010 to SP2013 farm. When we check the permission (Site settings -> site permission) and compare the new (/_layouts/15/user.aspx) and old sites (/_layouts/user.aspx), we found that all permission groups are the same. The users listed in permission groups are good. However, all the individual users are lost on this page.

I checked on the users' permission on SP2010 site. They have "Limited Access" permission. Is it because SP2013 no longer have this permission? Is there any MSDN article describe about the behaviour? Thank you.

App store approval process

Hi,

I'm SharePoint admin of a SharePoint online tenancy, and feeling really thick, but I'm struggling with the process of users requesting an app.

Scenario:

User from his site goes Site Contents -> Add an app -> SharePoint store and finds a free app.  He chooses "Request it".

I go to the appCatalog on our tenancy, edit the request item in the list, marking it as "approved".

Then what?  The user still seems unable to add the app to his site, he can see that I've approved it, but can't get any further.

I realise this is probably really simple, but I can't understand it.

I have found that as admin, I can go and get the app, but a) that doesn't seem right to me, if it were to cost money, I don't want to pay for it, and b) it becomes available to install on every single site in our tenancy, I thought I was just approving it for one site.

Thanks a lot.  Ps is this my first post so if I've done something wrong, I apologise in advance!

Richard.

SharePoint 2013 app domain configuration

$

0

I'm trying to follow the walkthrough at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp179923#SP15appdevonprem_bk_configure . I'm in the section under "Configure an isolated app domain to create and deploy SharePoint-hosted apps", and it's worked fine up until this last step:

Set-SPAppSiteSubscriptionName -Name "app" -Confirm:$false

At that point, I get this error message:

Set-SPAppSiteSubscriptionName : Settings or services required to complete this request are not currently available.
Try this operation again later. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.
At line:1 char:1+ Set-SPAppSiteSubscriptionName -Name "app" -Confirm:$false+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : InvalidData: (Microsoft.Share...ubscriptionName:SetSPAppSiteSubscriptionName) [Set-SPAppSiteSubscriptionName], SPException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPAppCmdlets.SetSPAppSiteSubscriptionName

Looking around online, I found some things that have fixed the problem for other people:

  1. Verify that the App Management Service is running (yes it is)
  2. Verify that the Settings Service app is running (yes it is)
  3. Give the account that you're setting apps to run as "Full Control" to the above apps (it has that now)

However none of those steps has fixed the problem.

What else needs to be in place for this command to work?

Suddenly getting UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database

$

Starting yesterday (I believe) we are suddenly receiving a "User not found" error when trying to view a user's profile page when clicking on their name (in search or elsewhere) via the url https://www.contoso.org/Person.aspx?accountname=contoso%255Cmyuserlogin

This is happening for all users. (but profiles exist and seem ok, and sync with AD is running fine) When looking in the logs I see the error  (full ULS log is later below)

Exception in LoadRequestedUserProfile: (Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database.

The only clue of what MAY be going on is just before that I see the following two lines which came up after I changed the Database logging to Verbose:

ConnectionString: 'Data Source=INSTANCE;Initial Catalog=UPAPROFILEDB;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Pooling=True;Min Pool Size=0;Max Pool Size=100;Connect Timeout=15;Application Name=SharePoint[w3wp][3][UPAPROFILEDB]'    Partition: NULL ConnectionState: Closed ConnectionTimeout: 15

SQL connection time: 0.0456 for Data Source=INSTANCE;Initial Catalog=UPAPROFILEDB;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Pooling=True;Min Pool Size=0;Max Pool Size=100;Connect Timeout=15;Application Name=SharePoint[w3wp][3][HNet3_Svc_Prod_UPA_Profile]

If I am reading that correctly, does it mean the connection to the database is timing out instantly? I am able to use powershell to pull up profiles and print them to the screen while on the webservers. And it's only the one specific page that is not working.

What sort of tests or further debugging can I do for the error above?

We are on premise, SharePoint 2013 sp1, sql2012, server 2012, claims using the full SharePoint Profiile Sychronization against AD.  Farm has been running since last august. Last week the admin team did run windows update on all servers, I can't be sure if it was broken for 5 days and no one noticed or if it broke yesterday.

I already did the following:

  • Verified the profiles do exist in central admin.
  • I can still access their personal sites directly via https://www.contoso.org/personal/myuserlogin
  • I checked the ProfileDB database and made sure the service accounts for the UPA has dbowner, so does the farm account, and the web application pool has SPDataAccess.
  • Verified the AD sync account has proper rights in AD.
  • I reran a full synchronization which ran with no errors.
  • File systems on the webservers and appserver have plenty of free space.
  • Rebooted every server in farm
  • I even checked the bin directory of the mysite webapplication, (since once I had a weird problem where access to bin was removed.) WSS_ADMIN_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_W4 have full control and WSS_WPG,IIS_IUSRS all have read and execute.
  • I opened powershell on the webserver I can indeed load profiles and print their values.

Search is not finding kaywords in picture library

I just setup a SharePoint 2013 server and created a picture library.

I posted a test picture and entered several words in the keyword box. This field is there by default.

When I search for the keywords, I do not receive any results. If I search for the title, I do receive the picture in the results.

What do I need to do to enable the search to find the keywords? I would think it would work by default. Otherwise, what is the point of having keywords?

Thanks for your help.

SharePoint Search Service upgrade to 2013 fails: "Inner Exception: An item with the same key has already been added."

$

Here's the situation:

  • Upgrading a SharePoint Server 2010 Search Service Application dB to our SharePoint 2013 SP 1 development environment, using the Management Shell
  • Running the following commands:
$applicationPool= Get-SPServiceApplicationPool -Identity 'SearchService_AppPool'

$searchInst = Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceInstance -local

Restore-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -Name 'SearchServiceApplication' -applicationpool $applicationPool -databasename 'SearchServiceApplicationDB' -databaseserver SERVERNAME -AdminSearchServiceInstance $searchInst
  • Creates the search dBs (crawl, links, analytics) successfully; however, in the end, I get....
  • "Exception: Action 15.0.107.0 of Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Upgrade.SearchAdminDatabaseSequence failed."

Looking at the ULS logs, I find the following:

Inner Exception: An item with the same key has already been added.
at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.Insert(TKey key, TValue value, Boolean add)     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.OOTBSchemaDefinition.FindAndFixExistingManagedProperties()     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.OOTBSchemaDefinition.InstallManagedProperties(Boolean upgrade)     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.OOTBSchemaDefinition.Upgrade()     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Upgrade.UpdateAllOOTBProperties.Upgrade()     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPActionSequence.Upgrade()

Exception: Action 15.0.107.0 of Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Upgrade.SearchAdminDatabaseSequence failed.
at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPActionSequence.Upgrade()     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPDatabaseSequence.Upgrade()     at Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Upgrade.SearchDatabaseSequence.Upgrade()     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeSession.Upgrade(Object o, Boolean bRecurse)

Anyone encounter anything like this during their search upgrade process? I'm not honestly even sure what duplicate value to look for at this point, if I were to run a SELECT Id, ClassId, ParentId, Name, Status, Version, Properties FROM Objects on"SharePoint_Config" in SSMS. Any insight or opinions on the matter are welcome; and thanks to those who choose to reply to this, in advance.
