Using both Windows Authentication and Forms Based Authentication Without Users Choosing Which One

$

Hello,

Is it possible to have a SharePoint 2013 Site Collection use both Windows Authentication and Forms Based Authentication at the same time but have which authentication method is used being based upon the url used to access the site?

Most users will be using Windows Authentication and we don't want them to have to constantly choose the authentication method when they first try going to a site.

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Stephen

Cache cluster is down, restart the cache cluster and Retry

Hi Guys,

Getting an intermittent error appearing in the event log that states the following:

The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.LMTRepopulationJob (ID <GUID>) threw an exception. More information is included below.

Unexpected exception in FeedCacheService.IsRepopulationNeeded: Cache cluster is down, restart the cache cluster and Retry.

This doesn't appear to be happening every time the timer job runs. It might be an hour between occurances or it could be up to 6 hours.

Reading up on this, the suggestions appear to be restarting the distributed cache service + other stuff. The thing is, for the most part, the cache service appears to be working. I am getting this error on multiple environments, patched up to the March 2013 uber update.

Just wondering whether others have seen this and found a way to resolve it..

Moving SP2013 and SQL2008R2 to new domain - no trusts between domain

Hello,

I'm looking to move a customized installation of SharePoint 2013 (Microsoft server 2012 std VM) and it's db (SQL 2008 r2 VM) from one domain to another domain. There will be no trust between the domains and assume that no users or service accounts will be migrated. Has anyone performed a similar operation? If so, can you provide guidance as to the best way to tackle this situation. Currently we plan on exporting the SP2013 VM from the old domain, importing (re-creating) that VM in the new domain and importing the DB to an existing SQL server in the new domain. My concern is being able to log in to Central Admin afterwards because the domain accounts are no longer valid. Should we change all accounts to local admins first, detach the db and change those accounts as well? Or would a totally different approach make more sense? Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks in advance,

Alex

NT Authority\Authenticated Users being added to SharePoint groups if a space character is entered in the list of users to add

$

When adding users to a SharePoint group, I've found that sometimes, if a space character is typed in the field where user or group names are entered, NT Authority\Authenticated Users is added to the SharePoint group in addition to the intended users/groups.

This seems to happen in a couple different circumstances:

  1. A space character is the only character typed in the field.
  2. A space character is typed after the last name is entered.

Has anyone else seen this?  Is this intended behavior?  It's very easy to accidentally do this, and if the group has a lot of members, it's easy to miss when it happens.

Other pertinent info:

  • SharePoint 2013 Enterprise, SP1
  • Occurs throughout the production farm and on my dev install

SSRS 2012 (SP Integrated) report on SP 2013 PerformancePoint Dashboard: when too many filter items selected together report does not update anymore!

$

I am having a situation with SSRS 2012 (SP-integrated) report rendered on SP 2013 PerformancePoint Dashboard using linked PerformancePoint (PP) filters.

The report works fine as long as too many PP filter items are not selected at the same time. When gradually selecting more items from the filter, the report updates itself until more than a sepecific numer of filter items are selected - the report simply does not update itself anymore. This "specific number of filter items", when hit, generates the following error in ULS:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An exception  occurred while rendering a Web control. The following diagnostic information might help to determine the cause of this problem:  System.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed.
at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind)
 at System.UriBuilder..ctor(String uri)
 at Microsoft.PerformancePoint.Scorecards.ServerRendering.ReportViewControl.ReportUrl(SqlReportViewData sqlReportViewData)
 at Microsoft.PerformancePoint.Scorecards.ServerRendering.ReportViewControl.RenderSqlReport(TextWriter writer, ReportView sqlReportView)
at Microsoft.PerformancePoint.Scorecards.ServerRendering.ReportViewControl.RenderReportViewControl(HtmlTextWriter writer, ReportView rv)  PerformancePoint Services error code 20700.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I already know that the cause of the issue is in the length of the query (perhapse RDL or MDX) that the browser is supposed to pass on to the instance of SSAS.

Some people had suggested a workaround that was suitable for older versions or non-integrated SSRS (see here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/cb6ede72-6ed1-4379-9d3c-847c11b75b32/report-manager-operation-cannot-run-due-to-current-state-of-the-object). Knowing this, have already done the changes suggested (adding the lines suggested to SP's web.config for Reporting and the web.config of the site on which report is rendred) at no avail, just to make sure.

I have rednered the same report on the same dashboard using SSRS filters and there is no problem; it just works fine. This has to be a bug in PP that is causing this.

Has anyone had the same problem with SSRS 2012 (SP-integrated) report rendered on SP 2013 PP dashboard using PP filter? Any fixes or workarounds?

thnx!

Discusson Boards - how to respond?

This is such a basic question I'm afraid to ask. How do you respond to an item posted on a Discussion Board? I don't see any options. I'm using SharePoint online. Does this only work with the server version of SharePoint? How do you have a discussion on the web site?

Office Web Apps Server - Access is denied

$

Hello,

I was able to create an Office Web Apps server and was able to create a new farm for that server all without any issues, everything works great.

Unfortunately right after creating the farm, when attempting to run any other related powershell commands such as:

Get-OfficeWebAppsFarm

Remove-OfficeWebAppsFarm

I get this error in powershell:

Get-OfficeWebAppsFarm : Access is denied.
At line:1 char:1
+ Get-OfficeWebAppsFarm

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityAccessDeniedException,Microsoft.Office.Web.Apps.Adm
   inistration.GetFarmCommand

Although everything is actually working on the server, I'd like to be able to use those other commands in the future so I can check configurations, use "Remove" for running updates, etc... Unfortunately it appears as though this Access is denied error may interfere with those activities.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thank you

SharePoint 2013 User Profile Synchronization: Unable to get profile attributes from BCS

$

Hi everyone,

I configured an AD (Active Directory) Sync connection to import user profiles from AD to SharePoint 2013 and I also configured a BCS connection with a really simple SQL Table for custom attributes (Ex; Favorite Color).

Then I tried to configure a User Profile Synchronization using my BCS connection, so I created a User Property to Link with the SQL data, and created some other custom attributes (Ex: Favorite Color) to import data from the database.

I started the Sync process and when It finished, I saw that attributes from AD were updated but from BCS were not. I used the MIIS client to review the process and I saw that Connector space for the BCS management agent shows nothing imported from the SQL table. Where as the connector space for the AD management agent shows the data getting imported from the AD.

Can you please help.

Thanks in advanced for your help!

The maximum I can do was move the site collection from one server to other server. It didn't move the apps in sharepoint site. I need help in moving the apps available in dev server to QA server.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

SharePoint 2013 SP1 Installation - Order ?

$

Hi,

There are many blogs on how to install SP1 on SharePoint 2013. Some of them says that we should install SP1 on the Applications Server first and then WFEs. Others say that the order is not important.

Q1 - Is there a server order to install SharePoint 2013 ?

Q2 - May I update half server one week and second half the week after (and having my farm working correctly in between)

Q3 - SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 contains SharePoint Foundation SP1. Why SharePoint Foundation SP1 still exist, could I deploy only SharePoint Server SP1 package eventhough I have only SharePoint Foundation installed ?

Thank you

How to backup/restore mysites/Skydrive Pro documents?

I have mysite setup for myself and now I'm testing the Skydrive/OneDrive for Business sync setup. It seems to be working fine, but what if a user deletes a folder on their mysite documents and local OneDrive folder? Is it possible to restore individual folders/files for mysites with the built in Sharepoint backup? If not, how can this be restored?

Hi,

I have recently upgraded my server to Sharepoint 2013 SP1.

Q1. I have upgraded CA and WFE servers. Do i need to run Sharepoint 2013 SP1 on my office Web apps server?

Q2. I see there is Office Web Apps Server SP1. May i know if i should upgrade my Office Web Apps server to SP1 too to have everything working properly?

Q3. Is Sharepoint 2013 SP1 works well with WFM 1.0?

The server farm account should not be used for other services

$

I have created a new SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. I only used the Farm Configuration Wizard to create the Search Service Application, all other aspects of the Farm was created using PowerShell.

The SharePoint Health Analyzer is reporting the following error:

Title: The server farm account should not be used for other services.

Severity: 1 - Error

Category: Security

Explanation: DOMAIN\FARM_ACCOUNT, the account used for the SharePoint timer service and the central administration site, is highly privileged and should not be used for any other services on any machines in the server farm.  The following services were found to use this account: Distributed Cache Service(Windows Service)

Remedy: Browse to http://centraladminsite:port/_admin/FarmCredentialManagement.aspx and change the account used for the services listed in the explanation. For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142685".

Now I understand how to change the account used to run the Distributed Cache Service, but my query is what account should I use in the least privelage model? I have setup the following 6 accounts as per TechNet guidelines (Link) and am not sure if one of these accounts should be used or if another account is required:

  • SQL Server service account
  • Setup user account
  • Server farm account
  • SharePoint Server Search service account
  • Default content access account
  • Application pool identity

After reviewing the TechNet article again, I don't fully understand the section titled "Service application accounts". Is the article advising me to create a seperate account for each row in the table? e.g. 1 account for Business Data Connectivity Service, a different account for "Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service", another account for "App management" and another account for "Distributed Cache", so 4 extra accounts if I choose to install all of these services within the Farm?

Also, what does the article mean when it says "Plan one set of an application pool and proxy group for each service application that you plan to implement."? How do I go about doing this?

2 x WFE & 1 Search Service Application - SharePoint Foundation 2013

$

I have a query regarding the topology of the Search Service Application with SharePoint Foundation 2013.

I have implemented a new SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. It is a small farm, which will initially be used by upto 100 members of staff and over the next few years is expected to be used by upto 1000 members of staff.

I understand that in Foundation you can only have 1 instance of a Search Service Application, however I am not sure what would happen if I started the "SharePoint Server Search Service" on both of my Web Front End servers that are in the Farm. A summary of the setup is as follows:

2-Tier Farm with:

2 x Web Front End Servers (1 @ Primary Data Center and 1 @ DR Site (Stretched Farm)

1 x SQL Database server on a SQL cluster at Primary Data Center with following databases mirrored down to SQL Server at DR Site:

  • CentralAdminContent
  • Configuration
  • Content

If I started the "SharePoint Server Search Service" on the DR WFE Server, would this simply use the existing Search Service Application within the Farm and the existing DBs that are associated with this service app? Would the Search Service on both servers then in effect be indexing the data twice? I need to understand how I go about getting search working again in the event I lose the primary WFE and/or primary sql server.

App+IIS server role, WCF data problems with Shrepoint Foundation 2013 install on 2012 R2

$

Hi

I am having tremendous trouble installing Sharepoint Foundation on a Windows 2012 R2 domain controller.

The server has just been added to our domain, promoted and this is the first piece of software I am trying to install. I had run Windows Update after joining it to the domain and before making it a member server before it was promoted.

I had real problems getting AppFabric to install but that is now done. However when I run the Sharepoint prerequisite installer (As Administrator) a results screen is displayed stating there was a configuration error during the installation of the Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role. It also says that the installation of Microsoft WCF Data Services 5 was skipped.

I manually added the Application Server Role.

I have manually installed WCF Data Services, which was successful.

I have used this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2765260/en-gb to try and get around the Application Server and IIS Roles error. The hotfix quoted on that page is not applicable to this system. I had to run a DISM command to create an image from the OS installation media before the Powershell commands would work.

Next, I rebooted the server and ran the prerequisite installer again as recommended. However, exactly the same problems are reported.

Can anyone help me with this, please?

Thanks.
