Copy-SpSite for duplicating training environments

So I work in training people on SharePoint and we were setting up an environment for students to work out of.  I got the idea that "hey, copy-spsite copies a site so we can just use that to duplicate the 'master' site".

Well, I found when I was going through our curriculum that it has a small quirk.  When I use copy-spsite to duplicate sites, it appears that it duplicates items in the recycle bin.  If I duplicate the sites and then delete something, there are then two items in the recycle bin.  If I try to restore any of the items, I get an error that there is not a unique item in the Database so the action failed.

I know this is a kind of non-standard way of doing things and in production might not be the way to go about things... but it would be REALLY convenient to be able to duplicate sites this way.  Has anyone ever seen this, know a way around it, or know a way to prevent it?

SharePoint and Active Directory Out Of Sync

Hello,

I have the following problem:

Let's say I have a SharePoint Site where an AD group (let's say Officers) is added to a SharePoint Group (let's say Site Visitors). All users from the group have now access to the site. However, if now I add a user to the AD group, that new user is still not having access to the site. It has to take plenty of time (I think it's 24 hours) until the person will be able to access.

Is there a way to lower this sync time? Or to do a manual sync.

I tried running a full AD Sync in the User Profile Service Application which was completed but did not help with this issue.

I'm using Claims Authentication.

Skydrive Pro to Sharepoint 2013 Online (O365) Sync problem with document folders

We have installed SkyDrive Pro on our desktops to sync document folders in O365 SP 2013.  But SkyDrive Pro says that document folders can't be greater than 2GB in size (not a single document greater than 2GB but the total size of the folder can't be greater than 2GB). 

Is this correct?

Is there a workaround (other than breaking up our folders into smaller folders which won't work)?

Is MS planning to fix this extreme limitation if it exists?

Thanks.  We were able to use SharePoint Workspaces successfully in the past to sync all our SP document folders in the past.  Doesn't make sense that the latest and greatest is only the latest and less-than-greatest.

SharePoint 2013 Marked Transactions Backup/Restore

Good day SharePoint Experts.

We're facing the possibility of applying some changes on SharePoint 2013 & I'm performing full farm backups (CentralAdmin/PowerShell) but also, I'm not feeling confident trusting my carreer on that kind of full backups (If you've some experience on recovery you'll understand my concern), because on 2013 architecture, multiple databases are interdependant... alsobackup only content databases is not an option.

So... I need to perform a full SharePoint 2013 backup by taking a full database snapshot via Marked Transactions (Unfortunately Virtual Server is not an option because of available resources) but, historically SharePoint does not like you to create a new "TransactionMarker" table inside any of it's databases.

Is there any way (Instead of only Content Database Backup / Full CentralAdmin/PowerShell) to perform a Transaction Marked Transaction Log Backup/Restore as in BizTalkServer & TeamFoundationServer to restore DB and move the transaction log up to the mark?, obviously a supported way to accomplish it without compromising Microsoft Support&Fix Service (I mean: an official supported way).

Hello,

I have recently installed Sharepoint Foundation 2013 and come across this error allot "The server was unable to save the form at this time. Please try again" when trying to add announcements, add folders, upload documents and/or use search.

The server is running 2012 Server on a VM, Quad 2.0Ghz, 16GB Ram.

I have tried restarting the'SharePoint Search Host Controller' to no avail. As a work around for a few users I have created an alternative mapping where everything works just fine.

Any ideas?

Internal vs. External Links and Skydrive usage

Hello,

we have the following construct:

- an internal Sharepoint Server (sharepoint01.local)

- the internal sharepoint is accessible from external via sharepoint.companyname.com

This construct is build because of various reasons (e.g. firewall and routing) and because of features we use (e.g. SSO).

We now have the issue that some users setup the skydrive Pro client in order to sync there webshare with sharepoint01.local. But when they are external the sync is no longer working (because of the internal URL used). Normally sharepoint should internally detect if the external or internal URL is used here. Could the Skydrive do the same? If possible it should switch to the internal URL when the user is working internally and the external one, if the user is working external.

Password change notification emails

I'm having this trouble in SharePoint 2013, too.

Helpful information, Trevor, but unfortunately setting AutomaticChange to false and updating the SPManagedAccount object does not reset the PasswordExpiration field to the value you indicate it should have. The PasswordExpiration property is a get accessor only, so you can't set it.

Before I added an email address to the Password Management Settings page (/_admin/PasswordSettings.aspx) in CA, I didn't get these erroneous emails. I've now removed the address with the expectation that the emails will cease.

AppDomain created on port 10000: why does appredirect.aspx send requests on port 443?

Environment is SP 2013 on-premises with March PU and October CU applied.  I have two web applications using host headers, both on port 443, both using the same SAN ssl cert:

  • sharepoint.contoso.com
  • mysite.contoso.com

The server is an Azure virtual machine, so I'm limited to using a single IP address.  The VM's FQDN name is sharepoint.contoso.com.

I followed the instructions here:

Configure an environment for apps for SharePoint (SharePoint 2013)

and here:

Enable apps in AAM or host-header environments for SharePoint 2013

I ran this command:

New-SPWebApplicationAppDomain -AppDomain contosoapps.com -WebApplication https://sharepoint.contoso.com -Zone Default -Port 10000 -SecureSocketsLayer

This created a binding on the sharepoint.contoso.com IIS web application on port 10000, using the wildcard ssl cert for contosoapps.com.

When I run the app, I end up getting a certificate warning, and when I continue through, a 404.  In Fiddler, I can see that the first request is to /dev/_layouts/15/appredirect.aspx, with a 302 result.  The next request is a tunnel to apps-5b3bd8632cbd8d.contosoapps.com:443.  This is where I get the certificate warning, because it's attempting to make a tunnel using the SAN certificate for contoso.com.  When I continue through, I get the 404 for apps-5b3bd8632cbd8d.contosoapps.com/dev/BasicSharePointHostedApp/Pages/Default.aspx?SPHostUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fsharepoint%2Econtoso%2Ecom%2Fdev&SPLanguage=en%2DUS&SPClientTag=0&SPProductNumber=15%2E0%2E4481%2E1005&SPAppWebUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps%2D5b3bd8632cbd8d%2Econtosoapps%2Ecom%2Fdev%2FBasicSharePointHostedApp.

What I don't understand is this:  I configured the AppDomain for port 10000.  Why are requests being made on port 443?

I believe I could get around this by creating an empty SharePoint web application on port 443 without a host header.  But I'm trying to avoid that, because I then have to use SNI since I have a single IP limit, which I don't want to do for other reasons.  I should be able to get this all to work on a single IP without SNI, no?

Office Web App stays unhealthy

Hi here,

I have been looking for the way to get Office Web Apps for the Lync 2013 working and one of the issue I would like to get fixed is "unhealthy" status.

One issue which I have found out is the .aspx files. E.g. the URL https://localhost/hosting/default.aspx returns 404. If I add static file into the same location e.g. index.html. That one is working fine.

Also when reading the ULS traces the same behavior is visible there. As it was in the IIS logs.

So it looks like dynamic content cannot be handled.

Here are the added features around this:

Server is pretty much out of the box solution, so it is a bit strange why it doesn't work.

Show more than three views for a custom list

Hello,

I have a list that has four views: "All Items", "View 1", "View 2", and "View 3". The request is that all four of those views appear at the top of the list, preferably both as a web part and when you open the list. The issue I have is only "All Views" and "View 1" and "View 2" show up. To get to "View 3" you need to click the "...". The next issue occurs that after doing that, either "View 1" or "View 2" will switch places with where "View 3" was and again you need to click the "..." to get to it.

The other thing I tried was I tried changing the view names to "A", "B" and "C" thinking that maybe it was too many characters, but this did not change the behaviour. Likely this behaviour is to be expected and normal, but the user who will be using this web part does not want to have to drill down to find those views. 

Would someone be so kind as to direct me in making this change to adjust this behaviour? Note if this is a system wide change, that is acceptable.

sharepoint 2013 Installation GUI and Powershell ,Easy and Good

Still not clear on PowerShell created DBs,reason is-

In above Script, If I replaced below line -
$dbName= $FarmName+ "_BusinessDataConnectivityService"
with below modified line as- 
$dbName= "BusinessDataConnectivityService"


Any suggestion for better installation on SharePoint 2013 small farm installation (1*1*1) topology.
If PowerShell, where can I get better and reliable script.
Any help appreciated.

Skydrive pro in Sharepoint 2013 has default permissions as empty

SharePoint 2013 new farm that was created using the autospinstaller scripts. It is installed with August 2013 CU.

When a user navigates to his Doc Library in his Mysites (Skydrive pro) link, he is not able to add any documents or view document library settings.
On logging in as admin to that site, I found out that the 'Documents' library in MySites (which is 'SkyDrive Pro' link) has unique permissions and is not inheriting permissions for the personal site collection. The unique permissions are empty, there is no permission to anybody.I changed it to inherit from the parent site and it worked fine for that user after that.
I found this odd, so I checked this for few other personal sites and found the same issue.

Why is this happening that the Skydrive Pro library is having unique permissions ?

Is there any setting in the MySite host or anywhere else that does this ? or a bug in June CU ?

Licensing gone wrong

Hi,

I actually had a serial key for a client of ours and i accidentally added it for our own domain.

We forgot to logoff so as soon as i entered the key in office.com/setupoffice365

it got added to our own domain rather than to our client domain.

How can i reverse the connection of this key to our own domain so i can add this to our client domain ?

Please advise.

I'm in the planning phase of our SP 2013 upgrade and have a question about OWA 2013.    I see that it is recommended to deploy OWA to its own separate server.  Do I need to install SharePoint 2013 on the server where OWA is going to be deployed?   thanks

AppFabric won't install - tried various solutions

I'm trying to install the prerequisites for SharePoint 2013 (on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1)

Like many others, I'm having troubles installing SP 2013 because the AppFabric part of the prerequisites is not installing.  Unlike others, there is really no error in the log.  After it starts installing appfabric, it shows the finish window, with AppFabric: installation error, and reboots machine.

I have tried: 

Altering and then removing the PSModulePath environment variable.

Downloading and running the AppFabric setup using the command window with the appropriate parameters (/i CacheClient,CachingService,CacheAdmin /gac).  Also started up the prerequisite installer from the command line specifying the appfabric setup file.

AppFabric is not and was not installed prior to installation. (it is not available to uninstall).  WIndows update is on, and I have applied all available updates.

What is the use of custom properties for terms in term store management of SharePoint 2013

Hi All,

Can some one pls explain what is the purpose of custom properties for terms in term store management tool of SharePoint 2013.

In general, for each term we have shared and local properties. What is the real purpose in terms of SharePoint development.

Please share with possible scenarios. Does it refer's to a hierarchical metadata in SharePoint ?

Dears,

I am installing share point foundation 2013 on:

  • Windows Server 2012
  • SQL Server 2012 Standard 64-bit Standard Edition
  • office 2013
  • Visual 2012 Ultimate

I have upgraded the server to domain Controller, and create user SPAdmin in the Domain, and provide him access to the SQL with the server roles:

  • dbcreator
  • public
  • Securityadmin and sysadmin

After installing all SharePoint Prerequisites, i begin installing SharePoint foundation and it raises an exception each time at step 3, with the following details:

Scenarios, i tried to solve and pass the problem:

  1. Used the Administrator to install SharePoint

Change email when user is added to a group

When new user is added to a SharePoint group, he gets an email that is system generated. Is there some way of changing the content and subject of that email that user gets?
