Hi,
My ultimate goal is while SharePoint BackUp, the Guids of DBs sometime creates problems with backup utility saying too long names.
So while backup and restore, do it is requirement to backup all Dbs or only content Dbs.

Now, for my new environment-
(here I am using Project server also upon same sharepoint machine.)

I have powershell which creates only admin content Dbs,not other DBs.
Pls Clarify/suggest

AAM - Intranet Upgrade

$

Hello All

I'd like to run this scenario by you all to see what you think.

I'm in the process of upgrading our SharePoint 2007 Intranet to SharePoint 2013.

I'll need to use a third party tool to migrate the content which is fine.

The current Intranet URL for the SP 2007 environment is intranet.domain.com.

The tricky bit is that I will potentially need to run both environments simultaneously under the same URL - intranet.domain.com.  SP 2007 so that users can still access the content (read only) and SP 2013 so that I can test everything is working ok.

So, the plan is:

1. Maintain the SP 2007 environment with the Content Databases set to Read Only, this so users can still access the content.

2. Create a new SP 2013 web application with a host header of intranet.domain.com but not register this in DNS initially.

3. Create an Alternate Access Map in SP 2013 - e.g. newintranet.domain.com and temporarily register this in DNS - this so I can test that everything is working as expected post content migration.

4. Once I'm happy that everything is working then I will remove the AAM and temporary DNS record, update DNS with the new IP for intranet.domain.com and decommission the SP 2007 environment.

I have partially tested this in a SP 2013 environment and it did work but what I found confusing was that even after I'd removed the AAM the URL (e.g. newintranet.domain.com) was still accessible and only clearing the browser cache was the AAM site rendered inaccessible.

Another completely different type of method would be to just rename the host headers for the new SP 2013 environment as detailed here - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/russmax/archive/2013/02/27/how-to-properly-change-the-host-header-url-of-a-web-application-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx - but the Intranet isn't extended.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

SharePoint 2013, Excel and long URLs/FileNames

$

  • I have SharePoint 2010 and I going to update it to 2013. I deployed SP 2013 Server and mounted copy of SP 2010 database - everythink ok! Then, I mounted the same copy of SP 2010 to another web-application and upgrade site to 2013.
After update, I found problem: some Excel files doesn't opens with error "long file name 218 characters etc."
Yes, I use Cyrillic URLs and filenames, I use long paths and filenames, but I can't undertand: non updated DB works fine, updated DB works a half.
    Error message (sorry, in Russian):

Systems with Office 2013 - file doesn't open.
Systems with Office 2010 and "Office common components 2013" - file doesn't open.
Systems with Office 2010 only - file opens fine.

    • Why Cyrillic symbols converts to UTF in upgraded to 2013 site? Russian "г" one symbol converts to %D0%B3 - six symbols; of course Cyrillic filename in 40 characters is out of any limits.

Is there any solution? Or I have to forget the idea about upgrade site.

Massive problems with implementation of Sharepoint 2013 reporting services

$

Dear All,

Hopefully there are some genius out there helping me with a really weird problem in Sharepoint 2013: After I installed Sharepoint 2013 I added the reporting services (SQL Server 2012 SP1) to my Sharepoint 2013 Farm but I don’t get it working although all tests given by Microsoft signaling me everything is correct, but it is not.  I’m not able to create a new Sharepoint document of type “Report Builder Report” (Error 403…I have all rights!) or when in “Manage Reporting Services Applications” (Central Admin) I’m receiving the error 500 and so on.

Here is my setup:
--------------------------------------

SERVER “BI”:
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
- SQL Server 2012 SP1
- Sharepoint content databases are installed here

SERVER “SP”:
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
- Sharepoint 2013

This is what I have done:
--------------------------------------
When I first installed the SQL Server 2012 on the server BI, I installed the reporting server in native mode. Later I installed Sharepoint 2013 on server SP. Weeks later I decided to add the Sharepoint integrated reporting services to Sharepoint by following all steps found here:

http://jantjesworld.blogspot.de/2013/09/install-reporting-services-sharepoint.html
Install Reporting Services SharePoint Mode for SharePoint 2013

This blog matches with the instructions found on several other sites (also Microsoft), so I’m pretty sure it is complete and correct.

In short these are the steps I have done:

1.Installed Reporting Services Report Server in SharePoint mode – I created a new instance on the SQL Server for this. I added the features: “Reporting Services – SharePoint” and “Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint Products”
2.In Sharepoint 2013, Central Admin: Register and Start the Reporting Services SharePoint Service: Done, all up and running (checked in Central Admin: Manage Services on Server -> SQL Server Reporting Services Service: Started)
3.Created a Reporting Services Service Application. As database server I used the newly created SQL Server instance and associated the Service App with my Sharepoint Web Application (80)

Now, here comes what is not working:
-----------------------------------------------------

In Central Administration: When I’m in Manage Reporting Services Applications and click on “System settings”, I’m receiving the error 500, Internal Server Error. Same under “Manage Jobs”
I tried to fix the issue as advised in several groups by reinstalling "Reporting Services - SharePoint" feature of SQL Server 2012 on the Sharepoint Server (Server SP), but didn’t work. Also the folder “Reporting” under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\WebServices is available and has files 
I associated the new file types in my site for Report Builder, Datasets, etc. and tried to add a new document of type “Reportbuilder Report”. Then I receive this error: “The website declined to show this webpage”
So I thought it must having to do with access right problems. I checked some logs (IIS, FailedReqLogFiles) and found out, that Sharepoint tries to list a directory because of not finding the file default.aspx. Indeed, this right doesn’t exist – but it is not required because the reason for this is just not finding the requested file.

When I check the IIS log, I can find several entries like the following (every 5 minutes the same):
2013-11-25 00:00:05 192.168.19.33 POST /e9cf7c49862048ce93387c4a1fcea515/ReportServiceBackgroundProcessing.svc - 32843 - 192.168.19.33 client-request-id/b2eb599c-c13b-d0e1-d26d-e9cb87e9a41a 500 19 13 93
The number “500” at the end of each line certainly means error 500 – internal server error.
From Microsoft’s TechNet I found this page: “Verify a Reporting Services Installation” (http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/library/ms143773.aspx)
All steps (except the last to launch the report builder) were successful.
Then I started everything from scratch after I found a video on MSDN:
“Deploying Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services in SharePoint Mode: Why and How”
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2013/DBI-B326#fbid=
I followed all steps they do show, but ended up with the same result as before.
BTW, I have done all installation and setup as Admin, so the user should have enough rights.

If I you require any further information (logs, config,…), please let me know!

I really hope that you can help me to get this thing finally working!

Any hint and thought are much appreciated!

Thank you very much!

Cheers,
Fabian

Item menu not showing when site browsed via alternate access mapping

$

Hi!

I have a problem with the item menu in all document libraries, when I'm accessing a site throught the AAM url: they don't show!

What I've done:

Create a site collection on http://server.
Configured an AAM on http://server.domain.com and added a binding in IIS for this AAM (I need the fully qualified domain name in the AAM, because of a solution I'm using).

Then, when I acces any document library on the AAM - say http://server.domain.com/doclib/allitems.apx - and I click on the menu of an Item, I get the popup showing the url and the "edit", "share" and "..." button. However, when I click the "..." button for the item menu for viewing and editing properties and so on, that menu is not displayed.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or even better, does anyone know how to solve this?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Ruud.

Feature to apply custom Masterpage and style, how to upgrade to SP2013- fail to apply the custom Masterpage/Styles

Dear All

In SP2010 farm we have  couple of webapp and inthat THOUSANDS of sitecollections, subsites in that , we have used custom master page and Css . it is applied as described below,

In our solution We have feature(web scope) and  Feature receiver has logic to apply the custom masterpage based on the site template and also applies custom CSS to the sites in SP2010. This feature is stapled to site templates.

But when we are upgrading to SP2010 to SP2013,  Styles and custom Materpage is  not applied to SP2013 sites. It gets applied only when deactivate and activate that feature(understood becaz feature receiver only has the logic to apply the materpage and Style).

So can any one help us here, as we have thousands of Sitecollections and subsites in that. How to make the custom masterpage and CSS to applied to the upgraded sites.

Many Thanks inadvance.

Host-named site collections with off-box SSL termination

$

My client's SP2013 farm currently uses path based site collections, however due to new requirements I'm expanding the farm by use of host-named site collections. I've set it all up in my development environment, however unfortunately the dev environment doesn't have off-box SSL termination (an expensive load-balancer wasn't justifiable for dev), so I'd like to just confirm whether my approach will work with off-box SSL termination

- Create a new web application with the -SecureSocketsLayer switch (the current web applications don't have this, so I can't use them)

$webApp = New-SPWebApplication -Name $webAppName -port 443 -ApplicationPool $webAppPool -ApplicationPoolAccount (Get-SPManagedAccount $iisAccount) -AuthenticationProvider (New-SPAuthenticationProvider –UseWindowsIntegratedAuthentication) -SecureSocketsLayer

- Then create a content database for it of course.

New-SPContentDatabase -Name $contentDbName -WebApplication $webAppName

- Create the host-named site collections in the new web application with HTTPS URLs

$spSite = New-SPSite -Url $httpsUrl -OwnerAlias $owner1 -SecondaryOwnerAlias $owner2 -ContentDatabase $contentDbName -HostHeaderWebApplication $webAppName -Name $name -Template $template

The main question I have is this: This creates an IIS site which uses SSL. In dev, I slapped a self-signed certificate on it in IIS and moved onward. In production however, the IIS site must be non-SSL as we have off-box termination. How will this function if the HNSCs in the web app are HTTPS? Do I just change the bindings on the IIS site to non-SSL port 80 and job done?

Thanks!

Should SPSessionStateService be enabled if claims based authentication is used in SP 2013?

$

I have claims based authentication enabled on my Web application. Which works alright, except session times out after every 5 minutes, despite higher Token Assertion Time (=30 mins) and LogonTokenCacheExpirationWindow = 1 min

I do not have SPSessionStateService enabled, is it required to be enabled?

Distributed Cache - Could I actively decide when to use it?

$

Hiya,

In order to better understand the SP2013 architecture, there are of course a few questions underway. One of them is around the distributed cache. I'd like the sanity check on the following statements regarding setup of same. First of, my approach to SharePoint installations is to ONLY install what is required. In other words, my default settings for this service would be disabled.

Distributed Cache should only be installed if required. The following cases serves as examples to a distributed cache:
1: Cases with federated authentication and 2 or more active web-front servers. This in order to reduce logon times, using the logon token cache.
2: If your solution uses news feed function on MySites. Distributed Cache is a prerequisite.
3: If your solution supports 10000+ Users.
4: If your solution has other elements from distributed cache as prerequisite.

I am not even sure I would install it, if I had 4 active web front ends in a intranet solution. Unless geographically different locations etc. I would probably use some other method to insure correct users on correct server.

The argumentation comes from the following:
1: When running the Distributed Cache service on a server, it must not be running with dynamic memory. (Cost goes up)
2: When running the Distributed Cache, it is recommended to be run on a dedicated server. (Cost goes up)
3: The amount of problems that can arise when not Installed/configured according to usage.
4: If its not needed, dont install it.

In my upinion the entire feed handling should be placed in a Service application, rather than a Cache service instance. Or atleast be split up to its own.

I'd like to hear any argumentation why I should include this service as a basic service to my SharePoint 2013 installation.

Basically derived from:

Hi,

In regards to SharePoint 2013 High Availability

If we are using SQL Server 2012 Availability Groups -

Is synchronise commit required on all SharePoint databases and do they have to be automatic failover. Is manual failover supported?

Is asynchronise commit/manual failover OK for some databases e.g. the content databases.

Site template from Shaepoint 2013 eval based sitecollection subsite to Sharepoint 2013 installation with standard license

We have  site template created on Sharepoint 2013 installation as  evaluation ( which works as Enterprise level)

Is it safe to o use this site template  using save as  site template and adding it to solutions gallery on site collection( On Sharepoint 2013 installation with October CU and Standard license)

one of errors we faced is due to  SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Collection features

"This web template requires that certain features be installed, activated, and licensed. The following problems are blocking application of the template:"

Will it fine if this feature is first deactivated on farm using Sharepoint 2013 installation as  evaluation, and then save subsite as template to be used in Sharepoint 2013 installation with October CU and Standard license

Excel Services BI with Secure Store - None or SSS

Hello

My current SharePoint 2013 setup - 1 WFE, 1 APP Server and 1 DB Server with 1 Web Application running on Claims with Kerberos.

I am trying to follow the SharePoint 2010 examples in the links below even though my environment is SharePoint 2013.

Configure Excel Services data access by using embedded data connections - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh223283%28v=office.14%29.aspx

Configure Excel Services data access by using external data connections in a BI test environment - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh223272%28v=office.14%29.aspx

I have done everything according to the examples above and I get the following errors:

Access was denied by the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh: ConnectionName

An error occurred while accessing application id ExcelServicesEmbeddedData from Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh: ConnectionName

An error occurred while accessing application id ExcelServicesODC from Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh: ConnectionName

Am I not able to use the Secure Store Service with Excel if I have Kerberos implemented? I have not yet created an Excel sample with the Windows option selected as I want to get the Secure Store option working first.

**Update:

Just to add I am using Office Web Apps and according to this link it should be supported.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/sharepoint-help/work-with-external-data-in-excel-services-sharepoint-server-HA102830785.aspx

Is there a further setting I need to configure to get Excel Services talking to an External Data Source like SQL Server?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello,

also i noticed that the config wizard fails. after looking at the logs it stating that it is failing on some DB's due to them being in Availability Group. So i think im stuck....i cant remove the DB's from the DAG since all of the applications for sharepoint link to the DAG name & not a particular node.

unless my thinking is wrong & i can just pull the DB's from the availability group, run the config, then add them back? however from  a sharepoint perspective those DB will not be avail...

Central Admin Content Database seems corrupted

Hi everyone.

I'm getting in troubles with my central admin.

When I open a browser to CA, the sharepoint error page stops me with message "Unable to complete this operation".

I got the error when trying to acces pages like these :

Digging the errors, I found that application pages are ok. Pages like :

  • http://myserver/_admin/CNTDBADM.aspx

So it appears that I have some troubles with my AdminContent DB.

Digging deeper in ULS reveals the following error messages (ordered by apparition datetime) :

[I truncated the full stacktrace for better readibility]

Application error when access /default.aspx, Error=Unable to complete this operation. Try again
 at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequestInternalClass.GetFileAndMetaInfo(.....

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Unable to complete this operation. Try again., StackTrace:
 at Microsoft.SharePoint.SPWeb.GetWebPartPageContent(....

SQL error code from last error 8622 - Query processor could not produce a query plan because of the hints defined in this query. Resubmit the query without specifying any hints and without using SET FORCEPLAN.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Query processor could not produce a query plan because of the hints defined in this query. Resubmit the query without specifying any hints and without using SET FORCEPLAN.
 at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(....

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Unable to complete this operation. Try again.
 at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequestInternalClass.GetFileAndMetaInfo(

The third error message (SQL) surprised me, but could not find any clues to resolve it.

I tried the following without success :

  • Delete the Content BD, the SPWebApplication (admin), then recreate (couldn't recreate, did a restore)
  • Backup adminContentDB from another farm and restore.

So, my question is : is there a way to re create the AdminContent DB without recreating a Farm ? (I'm in production :) )

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Need help on setting up new environment in SharePoint 2013 with host named site collections.

In current environment (SP 2007), we have publishing portal sites (number of site collections:50), collaboration sites (number of site collections: 60 ) configured on one web application and my sites configured on separate web application. All these site collections are configured with explicit path based site collections for each department like IT, HR, etc. If site collection exceeds 100 GB, we create another site collection for the same department but with different explicit path and with new DB, like

http://intranet.xyz.com/teamsite1/IT , if it exceed 100 GB , we create another with http://intranet.xyz.com/teamsites2/IT and assign new DB to this site collection.

Please suggest me the best design if I have to implement the same using Host Named Site Collection. Thanks!
