save site as template

Hi everyone,

After more research, I come to this site to expose my problem. In our network we have installed there a year SharePoint 2010. Following the release of 2013, we made the migration (2 VMs) that rather well. However, since we can no longer save a site as a template.
I tried different ways, via the web interface or via powershell, but nothing happens, it does not.

Here is what I get as an error in the powershell:

PS Y: \> $ Web.SaveAsTemplate ("SIT_test", "SIT Template", "Template Description", 0)
Exception calling "SaveAsTemplate" with "4" argument (s): "Error
when exporting the list named "testbcs" to the URL: Lists / testbcs "
The character Line: 1: 1+ $ Web.SaveAsTemplate ("SIT_test", "SIT Template", "Template Description", 0)+ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~+ CategoryInfo: NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId: SPException

So here when I export via the web interface, I get the page "Server Error in '/' Application
When I go in SharePoint logs, I consistently that around a line of 2, I get the following message (every MILLIseconds and only when I try to save as a template):

6/13/2013 11:32:25.03 w3wp.exe (0x19D0) 0x3058 SharePoint Foundation Files 00000 High UserAgent not available, file operations May not be optimized. to Microsoft.SharePoint.SPFileStreamManager .... f858ef59-6733-0000-b90e-59f83367ce01

In terms of rights, I connect remotely to the server and I use a administrator domain account with full control over the site. I watched a program which user uses the w3wp.exe process (for user agent error message), it is generally of "NT authority \ network service."
But  I have other message, but I do not think it is a problem. That said, it has repeatedly (4-5 times per millisecond), this message :

06/13/2013 13:34:42.64 w3wp.exe (0x1050) 0x333C SharePoint Foundation Files ai60c Medium
Disk allocations made for file operations: 105. dcf7249c-fb15-9227-80DA-c704c51ddbf5

and the following message after the series of repeating the (last) message :

06/13/2013 13:34:47.44 w3wp.exe (0x1050) 0x333C SharePoint Foundation Database 8acb High
[Forced gap due to logging, Original Level: VerboseEx] Reverting to process identity dcf7249c-fb15-9227-80DA-c704c51ddbf5
Sorry if this is a bit tricky to navigate, but I'm a little too hard with all these messages.

After my research, I check the access to the folder c: \ temp and c: \ Windows \ temp:
I give rights IIS_IUSRS (includes NT authority \ network services etc ...)
On some sites, they talk about giving access to these files to the "app pool", so the application pool in IIS located. I could add that the "DefaultAppPool" user. But I'm not sure whether this user need to be added.

I hope someone can help me out of this problem because I can not find a solution and I would love to do it.

in advance, thank you!

Benjamin

Hi Everybody,

I installed SharePoint 2013. I created a team site, then I deleted it.

I tried to open the SharePoint - 80 throw Browse in IIS, but I get HTTP 404 Error (The webpage cannot be found). And at the browser when typehttp://sharepointserver or http://localhost I also get HTTP 404 Error.
Is that normal? I think it is not. Does anyone has a clue how to solve this issue?

Thanks a lot...

Newsfeed error - The operation failed because the server could not access the distributed cache.

Recently installed SharePoint 2013 RTM, on the newsfeed page an error is displayed, and no entries display in the following or everyone tabs.
"The operation failed because the server could not access the distributed cache."

Reading through various posts, I've checked:

- Activity feeds and mentions tabs are working as expected.
- User Profile Service is operational and syncing as expected
- Search is operational and indexing as expected
- The farm was installed based on the autospinstaller scripts.
- Don't believe this to be a permissions issue, during testing added accounts to the admin group to verify

Any suggestions are welcomed, thanks.

The full error message and trace logs is as follows.

SharePoint returned the following error: The operation failed because the server could not access the distributed cache. Internal type name: Microsoft.Office.Server.Microfeed.MicrofeedException. Internal error code: 55. Contact your system administrator for help in resolving this problem.

From the trace logs there's several messages which are triggered around the same time:

Powershell to find and rename duplicate values in list items

$

Is there a way using powershell to find duplicate values in a SharePoint list and rename them as "_1", "_2", "_3", etc.

As an example in my test "Products" list I have the following items:

So for the highlighted items above which have duplicated "SAPMaterial" values, is there a way to use powershell to go through the list to find items that have duplicated values and then if duplicate values are found to then update their "SAPMaterial" value to be like:

  • 000000000000227142_1
  • 000000000000227142_2

and so on....

The reason I want to find out how to do this with powershell is because we have a list with about 300 items and for quite a lot of these items the values in the "SAPMaterial" column have duplicates. This will take forever doing it manually.

I currently have the following powershell which deletes the duplicates, now we don't want to delete them only renaming them as described above.

#Add-PSSnapin microsoft.sharepoint.powershell
$web = Get-SPWeb -Identity "siteURL"
$list = $web.Lists["Products"]

$AllDuplicates = $list.Items.GetDataTable() | Group-Object SAPMaterial | where {$_.count -gt 1}
$count = 1
$max = $AllDuplicates.Count
foreach($duplicate in $AllDuplicates)
{
$duplicate.group | Select-Object -Skip 1 | % {$list.GetItemById($_.ID).Delete()}
Write-Progress -PercentComplete ($count / $max * 100) -Activity "$count duplicates removed" -Status "In Progress"
$count++
}

Thanks for any suggestions...

I've setup alerts but when the users receive the alerts all the links are wrong.

For example

The Home link is pointing to http: //sharepoint

Modify my alert settings is pointing to http:// sharepoint/_layouts/15/Mysubs.aspx

How can I change this to the correct Sharepoint link?

SharePoint 2010 to 2013

Hi,

this is my first post here. I'm planning the upgrade of Sharepoint 2010 to 2013. I know I will use the database-attach method. In my scenario, we also have to change the whole security, design and clean up unused sites. The clean up process will takes weeks (maybe months) so I have to do a granular upgrade. We have 70 sites.

At the end, the new farm will have the same URL. I wondering if I should do a copy of production farm, do the clean up site by site and copy the database to the new farm 2013. If I do that I know I will have to redirect the site done to the new farm URL. The DNS host entry can only have one IP so I have to configure an alternate access mapping. I have issue now to load site collection with alternate access mapping. I mean it works for the top site page but not for other site collection.

I didn't find information about people doing the same. Is it a nice plan? Any suggestion or better plan?

SharePoint 2013 - Missing or grayed options in Central Administration?

I am working in a one box configuration server farm using Windows Server, SQL Server SP1 2012 and SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Ed. I installed in Portuguese or in US-English version for 4 times due some issues I found out. Some of them are described mainly in Project Server forums.

Now the issue is in the SharePoint Central Administration. I detected that after I ran the Farm Configuration Wizard and someti-me in between changing some Server accounts to avoid error messages in the Monitoring services and Project Server installation some options of the SharePoint Central Administration disappears or were grayed out consistently in all of my configuration attempts.

The main points that I detected are:

1. The option "Manage Services in the Server" disappears in the System Settings section:

2. The Farm Configuration Wizard option disappeared.

3. In the "Manage service applications" page, the button "New" is disabled so I cannot activate a new service application.

I suspected that they were a problem of account I was using, so I tried to use the setup, farm admin, SharePoint App pool accounts without success.

As a penultimate option, I restarted the box. After that, I accessed by terminal services and the issue remained, but when I accessed from a workstation, all missing and disabled accounts came back, using the same account (which was the farm admin account) for both accesses.

What did I go wrong? Help are welcome.

Thank you.

Problem with Wizard not using FQDN

I am running into problems setting up SharePoint and it starts with the installation wizard. Let's say I am configuring a 3-Tier farm and have a server named App1.

In my farm, I want all sites to use port 443 and SSL including Central Administration. When I use the wizard and specify the database, I have no option to set the FQDN. and I get a "default " admin site that is something like: http://App1:<random port #>. I can set the port number but that's not the real problem. The real problem is that the wizard uses http://App1 and NOT http://App1.mydomain.com.

Now I can change the bindings/site address to the FQDN after the install and use port 443, but the original name "App1" is hard-coded/stored somewhere.

The problem arises when I try to run an update and then re-use the wizard to try and get the updates to actually be run on all the various databases (why the updates don't actually install themselves fully is a whole other issue). The wizard perpetually resets the administration site to the netbios name format (http://App1:<port#> and RESETS the appropriate FQDN (https://App1.mydomain.com). Additionally, various links in SharePoint seem to get hard-coded the short format too. The problem is that the sort format should NEVER be valid in my farm becase certificates require the proper FQDN. I ALWAYS want SSL!

HOW DO I GET THE WIZARD TO USE MY FQDN? HELP! PLEASE!

Install Guide Using Actual Best Practices

Okay, I have been trying for months (granted on and off) to get SharePoint setup and configured properly. I have actual on-premises licenses and not trials versions.

I want a 3-Tier farm and have found numerous installation guides. For example, I have found these:

Install SharePoint 2013 across multiple servers for a three-tier farm

Test Lab Guide: Configure SharePoint Server 2013 in a three-tier farm

The Test Lab Guide is more valuable to me because I do need to setup SAML and Single Sign-On as well as eventually getting Business Intelligence configured.

My problem is that every guide I find violates Best Practices and all, essentially, have disclaimers indicating they are not fully complete or appropriate for a production environment. Are there any guides that actually use Best Practices and/or are appropriate for a production environment? I am particularly looking for guides where the correct accounts are setup as this link describes:

SharePoint 2013 Service Accounts Best Practices Explained

I am looking for something that, at least, follows the "medium security" described. Every time I follow one of the official guides I get bit in the @ss later because the permissions are so mangled: upgrades don't install properly, warning messages fill the logs, websites don't work correctly, etc. ... OR ... the farm is highly vulnerable for accounts not following least privileged principles.

Is there at least one guide that demonstrates setting up a 3-Tier farm that DOES follow a reasonable level of "Best Practice"?

Sharepoint 2013 - Migrate from NTLM to Kerberos

Hello,

When we setup our sharepoint 2013 site we went with NTLM and now are looking to move to Kerberos.  I've done a lot of googling and did find this website - http://blog.blksthl.com/2012/09/26/the-first-kerberos-guide-for-sharepoint-2013-technicians/ and most pages support what this is telling you what to do.  However after following the directions, it's still using NTLM to login.  Does anyone have any thoughts as to what may be happening or things to try?  There's no errors in the logs that I can see.

Thanks,

Scott

Upgrading to 2013

So I have the task of upgrading our existing 2010 farm (single front end, plus single sql) tp SharePoint 2013. I am going to build a new 2012 server and install SharePoint 2013.

Next task is to then migrate everything onto the new server. I do have workflows and an event handler running behind the scenes.

I have never upgraded SharePoint before, so what are the steps for this task?

What are my options in order to complete this task?

What I am trying to say is HELP!!

Workflow Approval 2013

$

Hello,

First off I am new to SharePoint.

I have installed a new installation of SharePoint 2013 STD with a separate server running SQL. I have added the Workflow manager and everything seems fine but I have some questions.

What I would like to create is a Leave Request Workflow. The first Issue that I have is that I am missing "Approval - SharePoint 2010" from the list of available workflows. So many of the guides I have found online won't help because they reference this.

Here is the process I am trying to create.

  1. User goes to SharePoint site and clicks on a link that takes them to a form to fill out.
  2. This form asks for details about time off, start and end date, as well as any comments.
  3. Once the user hits save, the information is sent to a designated user via email  to approve the time off. (A copy would also be sent to requesting user)
  4. The "Approver" would then accept or reject.
  5. If rejected an email would be sent to the requester notifying them.
  6. If Accepted, an email would be sent to the requester notifying them as well as entering the details into a vacation calendar on the SharePoint site.

Is this possible? Can anyone offer any insight to create something like this?

Thanks!

Ryan

Error While Backing up SharePoint 2013 Farm!

We are desperate.  Could anyone please point us in the right direction. I could not find anything searching for this error.

We tried backing up the entire farm (this is the goal) but kept getting errors. So we backed up each individual component which worked - except for the Search Service. That is what was causing the entire farm backup to fail.

We cannot do individual backups - we need to back up the entire server in one go. If you have any insight on how to resolve this error with backing up the Search Service. Or, do we need to remove the Search Service and provision it again and how would we do that.

Here the error taken from the backup log:

Want to migrate or move current SharePoint 2013 environment to a different environment

Hello,

One of our client is seeking to merge the current SharePoint 2013 environment with another SharePoint 2013 environment that they possess.

I would appreciate if someone can guide or direct us to the right direction (steps here or point towards any documentation etc.).

We have custom solutions deployed to our current SharePoint 2013 environment.

Following are the two scenarios I am looking forward to:

  • Different domain
  • Same domain

Note: The migration that they might choose can be on application level or the physical servers, currently we do not know.

Thank you and

Regards

When list item deleted, permission removed as well

I have a list.  When a item is created, the workflow will assign unique permission to this item.

When the workflow finishes all steps, it will delete this item.

My question is when this item gets deleted, the unique permission associated with this item will be deleted from the database as well? Or I need to manually delete permission before delete this item.

I checked the list permission, I can see 2000 user names with limited access.  There are only 80 active items in the list. The threshold for unique permission is 50000.

Claims-based authentication - Classic mode authentication

Hi,

can sharepoint servers in different domains share service application with different
authentication methods. Is it possible to configure a claims mode application to use windows based authentication (the default). In this case, if the client application is set to auto authenticate with a logged in users domain credentials, there is a “silent redirection” where the windows authentication token gets converted by SharePoint into a claim to be used by SharePoint

thanks

I followed the steps provided by Nauman in this excellent tutorial on how to setup an Apps site.

http://www.naumanahmed.com/2012/07/sharepoint-2013-app-management-service.html?q=app

I set it up, I can download apps, I can do everything to get them on my site.

But I have one big problem (which I expected from when I started this and was hoping it wouldn't be a problem.

Getting the Apps to load on other sites and I think it is a:  (drum roll please)

DNS Issue.

Ok, so I setup the site using my internal domain (as expected in step 1-2-3.

But since my FQDN is ms.local instead of being tied to my actual business domain name.  I wasn't expecting any problems with this when I initially set this up.

Now I have problems when I download apps and get them setup but when I access apps from other sites.  It links me to:

http://apps-30deab43fb2791.apps.ms.local/NWOnline/launch.aspx?AppWeb=http%3A%2F%2Fapps%2D30deab43fb2791%2Eapps%2Ems%2Elocal%2FNWOnline&HostUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fapps%2Emekong%2Dsoft%2Ecom&Lang=en%2DUS

As you can tell this is not a part of the .com domain name I made in alternate access mappings for apps.mycompany.com.

And I get this error:

This page can't be displayed
  • Make sure the web address http://apps-30deab43fb2791.apps.ms.localis correct.
  • Look for the page with your search engine.
  • Refresh the page in a few minutes.

How can I change my DNS to reflect that it works properly with the apps site, I am not going to rebuild my server to accommodate a change in Domain names.

Please help.
