I am installing a new SharePoint 2013 farm in a three-tier configuration. I have done extensive research, and everything has gone very smoothly except for creating the web application and site collections. I keep getting myself more and more confused about host names and the proper way to set up the public URLs and host headers, especially when it comes to adding mysites.

GOAL1: I would like my staff to be able to type the intranet name of the site (just "inside") and get to it without adding the FQDN (our older sharepoint site works this way).

GOAL2: I would like to host the mysites on a separate web application / content database. 

• Environment: a public school with 120 users - one intranet site collection and one mysite site collection. We will eventually use all features - Office Web Apps, workflow, BI, and maybe the app store.
• Domain: alton.local
• Server Names: acsspAPP (hosting CA and applications) and acsspWEB
• Internal URL: http://inside (maps to http://inside.alton.local)
• External URL: http://inside.alton.k12.nh.us
• MySites: (ideally) http://my.alton.local (separate web application / database)

When I create the web application as follows (per the Microsoft tech lab guide), I can access it by typing http://inside.alton.local but NOT via http://inside :

• Port: 80
• Host Header: inside.alton.local
• Public URL: http://inside.alton.local
• DNS: on zone alton.local, an A record for "inside" points to the IP address of the SharePoint WEB server, and can ping it.

So, my questions are:

1. Is my web application set up correctly?

2. Should I use AAM's, HNSC's with URL mappings via Set-SPSiteURL, or ... ?

3. How should I set up the My Sites, specifically:

• Can they have a URL like http://my.alton.local , running on a separate web application / dB?
• Can they run on Port 80 or should I be using a separate port (Microsoft Tech Lab Guide does do it with a separate port).

Hopefully someone recognizes this problem but my search results suddenly disappeared in SharePoint 2013 (after it showed them perfectly). This happened after a couple of days of good results. It happened to one of my upgraded site collections (from SharePoint 2010).

No settings were changed, no permissions were altered, I'm clueless!

I did a full crawl, it crawls al the 86,000 documents, but 0 visible results (for none of the users, even the default content account). I've reset the index, crawled again, same nice item count in crawled items, still no results. Even incremental crawls didn't work. I also changed the default content access account, to see if it was something with that, also didn't work.

I even deleted the search application and re-created one, still no success.

It's like the content database has some issues or something when upgrading, but that shouldn't make sense (because it happens after a couple of days). Just to be sure I made a Backup-SPSite export of the site collection and attached it to a new content database to be sure, went ok a couple of days (like I mentioned above) and then they disappeared again.

Hopefully someone can help me with this!

I'm looking for a way to import a list to my sharepoint online 365. But if I use the Listimport using the App "Import Spreadsheet" I can't configure a content type as result and if i try to use access, the colum for Metadata is write protected and the values for the lockup colum seems not to match the existing content...

I would like to create performance point dashboards with integrated discussions. Something similar to blog sites where anyone can post a comment on each reports.

The goal is that users can be able to give comments on reports and even read the thread of the discussion of the same report.

I know there is a manual way of doing this by using Sharepoint itself -- create your own page, put a report and put a dashboard together (which is tedious). But I'm hoping to just use the performance point as the main tool and just insert a discussion board so that I can still leverage on the features of a standard performance point dashboard.

Let me know if anyone has made or tried this. Thanks a lot in advance!

While upgrading from SP 2007 to SP 2013, one of th site is not opening. I am getting "Something went wrong" can not complete this action. The site home page is not opening.

We are using windows authentication. My computer is in the same domain as the SharePoint 2013 server. After logging into one of the sites, I clicked on "Sign Out", it instructed:

Please close the browser to complete sign out.

I closed all the browsers but when I went back to the site, I was already signed in (i.e. I had never been signed out).

How to activate sign out?

Hi all

The MOSS infrustructure team has asked me to wirte an architecture paper to allow them

to safely configure MOSS 2013 farm for sql server 2012's BI services (especially self modelling,self reporting etc.).

The paper should include the following articles:

 - availability

 - backup policy

i have facing the issue while installing configuring AppFabric manually.

I have SharePoint 2013 RTM lab environment  and one web application sp2013.<domainname>.com hosted in HTTP port 80. I've also set upmy sites using the same web application. I know this isn't the best practice for my sites, but since this is a externally available lab environment it was easier to set everything behind one web application in port 80.

The root site collection is a publishing portal with 4 subsites and mysite host is found at urlhttp://sp2013.<domainname>.com/my. The Personal site location(wildcard inclusion) in mysite setup is set topersonal.

I made the web application externally available with Alternate Access Mappings:

Default: http://sp2013.<domainname>.com
Internet: http://dev-demo.<someotherdomainname>.com

All is fine both internally and externally when I'm using the publishing portal I mentioned earlier. Links and UI are displaying correctly and all subsites are accessible. I can also access my personal mysite. The new nice newsfeed (or microblog) feature is also fully functional.

However some links in newsfeed use internal hostname instead of  the external hostname. Everything is fine when browsing the site internally from lab machine or from LAN.Problem occurs only when browsing mysite newsfeed externally. For example when I click someone's name in the newsfeed, the link uses http://sp2013.<domainname>.com while it should use http://dev-demo.<someotherdomainname>.com which was set in AAMs.

So clicking user's name in the newsfeed redirects me to http://www.hugedomains.com so I could register the domain :D It's quite weird that this occurs with only some links. Some links in newsfeed are displaying correctly but some are not. I also noticed the users name link URLs change also when I click "Show all X replies".

Is it bug or wrong configuration?

Hi, Product configuration Wizard failed at Step 4 on SharePoint 2013 stand alone server.

Previously it was running successfully but today I am getting error while running Product configuration Wizard and it is failed at step 4.

I am currently migrating a huge SharePoint site (1T of data with 5000+ users). In the process of the migration, I am also doing a "reparenting" process (child site moved to parent site). I have tried the stsadm export/import command. After several days of running the script. I am encountering this problem in the import:

FatalError: The content has expired and can no longer be used. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090317)

The import.log shows the following exception:

I have seen others posted same issue at CTP version.
Does it mean SP 2013 RTM can't be installed on servers which has joined any domain?

Hi guys,

We are upgrading our 2010 server to 2013.  I know before I begin the database copying that I need to create the 2013 farm.  What's confusing to me is this.

Do i connect to an existing farm or create a new server farm?

Where can I get a comprehensive list of changes SharePoint 2010 and 2013 (implemented with least-priveleged security model) make to local security policies? I have only been able to find bits and pieces of this important info from non-Microsoft sources. I need the details to prevent GPO from disabling or modifying access to needed groups and permissions (and breaking things).

Through experience and what I've researched, the IIS_IUSRS local users group needs "Impersonate a Client After Authentication," and at least some service accounts need "Allow log on locally," "Log on as a service" and "Log on as a batch job." Is this correct and if so...which accounts need which permissions? Are there others?
