Accessing user profile using shared services

I have got two Virtual Machines fully loaded with SharePoint 2010. Machine 1 will consume user profile services from Machine 2. I already have made the necesary changes using Central Admin. Machine 1 is using Machine 2 UPS.

I want to create a Refinement Panel in Machine 1 and create a sub type in Machine 2. The Sub type will have custom user properties. How do I access user properties using shared services and show them on the Refinement Panel in Machine 1. Is it simply the matter of making changes to XML file - webpart -> Edit Webpart -> Refinement -> Filter Category Definition (as you would do had the UPS been local)?
