Is it supported if we remove system accounts in SQL instance?

$

We got a client with a policy that no identity must persist in SQL security and all the identities must be contained in databases, not on the instance level. If they remove service accounts (farm, service application, app pool accounts, etc.) and only leave "install account" on the SQL instance level, will it be a supported configuration? Or does SharePoint require these system accounts to have any instance rights?

SharePoint 2013 Popularity trends return "Sorry, this site hasn't been shared with you."

Hi,

with my test user in a SharePoint site when click on the "Popularity trends" link below Site settings receive this message "Sorry, this site hasn't been shared with you".

I checked the permissions assigned to my test user with my admin user and I found these permissions:

List Permissions All;

Site Permissions these:

  • Manage Permissions  -  Create and change permission levels on the Web site and assign permissions to users and groups.
  • View Web Analytics Data  -  View reports on Web site usage.
  • Manage Web Site  -  Grants the ability to perform all administration tasks for the Web site as well as manage content.
  • Add and Customize Pages  -  Add, change, or delete HTML pages or Web Part Pages, and edit the Web site using a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-compatible editor.
  • Create Groups  -  Create a group of users that can be used anywhere within the site collection.
  • Browse Directories  -  Enumerate files and folders in a Web site using SharePoint Designer and Web DAV interfaces.
  • View Pages  -  View pages in a Web site.
  • Enumerate Permissions  -  Enumerate permissions on the Web site, list, folder, document, or list item.
  • Browse User Information  -  View information about users of the Web site.
  • Use Remote Interfaces  -  Use SOAP, Web DAV, the Client Object Model or SharePoint Designer interfaces to access the Web site.
  • Use Client Integration Features  -  Use features which launch client applications. Without this permission, users will have to work on documents locally and upload their changes.
  • Open  -  Allows users to open a Web site, list, or folder in order to access items inside that container.
  • Edit Personal User Information  -  Allows a user to change his or her own user information, such as adding a picture.

Personal Permissions All.

I read that I must add the "Create subsites" permission but I do not understand the link.

Can I have an explaination?

Best regards,

Francesco.

Hi,

I am trying to migrate my reporting service(sql 2014, sharepoint mode, sharepoint 2013, windows server 2008 r2) to (sql 2016, sharepoint mode, sharepoint 2016, windows server 2016 r2).

Can anyone help here with some documents.

I tried:

https://anothersharepointblog.com/migrating-a-sql-server-reporting-service-application

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/reporting-services/install-windows/migrate-a-reporting-services-installation-sharepoint-mode?view=sql-server-2017

Changing service account passwords

Hi - following a security incident I have to change the passwords of all the main SharePoint service accounts - these are managed accounts in Central admin and include the App pool account, the setup account and the farm account

The twist is we use the same service accounts in 5 separate production farms - (not my design!)

I found this link - which seems to be the most comprehensive guide to changing passwords of service accounts

My questions:

1 - Is this the best guide available?

2 - how will I manage this on 5 farms? e.g. for the App Pool account my guess is that I will change the password in AD and then  follow the steps for each farm - so expect lots of downtime

All farms are SP2013

Thanks!

Jonj

Unable to connect to SMTP host Workflow SharePoint 2013

Hi,

I am creating a SharePoint 2010 approval workflow from SharePoint 2013, this approval workflow I can create without problems, however when I use it on an item in the library it generates an error because it can not send mail .

Now check SharePoint configuration, Outgoing SMTP is well configured, in other Web Application and Site collection works without problems, this problem only appears in a specific Site Collection, I do not find what restrictions can have, checking the SharePoint LOG I have the next record:

However, although the error says that you can not connect to the SMTP server, with the other sites on the farm and other workflows, this does not happen to me.

Thanks.

Cannot add a server to the farm

Over the past month I have added 3 servers to my existing 2-server farm, bringing the total to 5 servers. I am now trying to add another and here is what happens:

Create new Windows 2012 R2 VM on VMware + Install all critical updates

Add my install account + my farm account as local administrators

Log on as the install account (spAdmin)

Install Prerequsites + install all critical updates again (reboots involved)

Install SharePoint 2013 SP1 (same version that is on other farm machines)

Run the Sharepoint Configuration Wizard (right-click, run as Administrator)

Enter SQL server and click to refresh the database list. SharePoint_Config is located.

Select SharePoint_Config db and click Next.

I get a blurry font (sometimes) on the new VM after a couple of seconds and a few seconds after that I get a box that says"Failed to connect to the existing server farm located at the specified database server and database name. the database name is not a valid configuration database."This is strange since it was just able to retrieve the list of config databases (1).

When I look in the install log I can see the connection string that it uses to hit SQL. It looks like this:

NTLM has been chosen connect to existing config db, so building the connection string:Data Source=sqlserver\spsql2013,2433;Initial Catalog=SharePoint_Config;Integrated Security=True

Here is the exception / stack trace that appears right below that:

An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was thrown.  Additional exception information: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x80004005): No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

There are a few things that are just confounding:

1. I have rebuilt the server 3 times on different hardware. No change.

2. The issue about connectivity seems to be a red herring. I can obviously connect to SQL since the configuration database name is retrieved. However (!), I also have a DEV farm on a different SQL server. I cannot add the server to this farm, either. Same errors / behavior. I was able to create a new farm targeting a different SQL server, though. All SQL servers are in the same OU in AD.

3. I know that there are 2 patches for Microsoft Office which must be installed. Two weeks ago when I added my 5th server the PSConfig Wizard told me I needed to install the patches before joining the farm. Using that information, I have tried leaving the patches off intentionally on this 6th vm just to see if the wizard would prompt me again. It doesn't.

Firewall is configured "OFF" on all areas and the service itself is disabled.

There's obviously something very strange going on. I am open to all suggestions.

Hello Everyone,

I have a site collection with no subsites which holds the data of 2TB. I found that users were not able to upload any more files since it touched 2 TB. For any site collection it can hold upto 2 TB and max 4TB. I suggested my SQL team to create secondary db file so that it will let users to continue to upload files. In this case how should i archive the content without losing metadata.

Do RBS work ? any other solutions where i can use existing data within same site and continue to upload files with no interruptions.

Thanks,

Mike

MySite Cleanup - deleting active users

Hello,

I'm seeing a bizarre issue with UPSA - Mysites Cleanup.  This job had been previously disabled per management request by the previous admin.  A handful of users complained that they see users that are no longer with the company when they go to their org chart on their personal sites.  We ran the following script to determine sites that are marked for deletion:

select * from userprofile_full bDeleted = 1

we found out that there are about 5000 profiles marked for deletion.

So, they decided to enable the Mysites Cleanup job.  Once we did that, the managers of those users started getting emails.  What they have noticed that - some of the users are actually active employees and they were never disabled.  When I browse to their personal site - it says profile not found.

Any ideas?  We are in a bit of jam.

SharePoint 2013 Personal Site (My Site) Creation Issue

I am having issues with the Personal Sites (My Sites) in my SharePoint setup. I have followed this guide to set up My Sites: http://blog.sharedove.com/adisjugo/index.php/2012/07/25/visual-guide-setting-up-my-sites-in-sharepoint-2013/

When I try with any user to click on either Newsfeed, SkyDrive, Sites, About Me or click Follow on a page, it just brings me to the About Me page.

Here's a pic of the site. The Personal Site creation won't start. Not even a promt, warning or error is shown.

I tried several other guides, and tried several fixes aswell, including the most recent SharePoint Server updates.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

SharePoint 2013 - User Profile syncronization job run successfully but no update show.

Hi

User Profile services (UPS) was setup and been running fine for a while now but lately AD user profile properties have not been synced with SharePoint anymore.   I checked and find that User Profile synchronization increment or full jobs run successfully.  I checked using Synchronization Service Manager tool and all synchronization connections show passed with no errors.

This farm have 3 Application servers APP1, APP2 and APP3 and I only run UPS synchronization job on only one of them  APP3.

I tried Get-SPserviceinstance  and found that  User Profile Synchronization Service  is running on both APP1 and APP3 now.  I think this may be the problem why SharePoint Users profiles did not get update is the job run on APP1.

I don't know how that happened but I checked services on servers and ensured that FIM Synchronization Service only running on APP3.

what should I do to make sure APP3 is the only and correct server to run UPS Synchronization job?

Thanks for any advise or comment.

Merge user accounts

Hello,

I have activate the user profile synchronization service after 2 years of running SharePoint 2013.
I use the "SharePoint Profile Synchronization". The import has no errors, but I have a little problem.

I have old accounts from the sharepoint directly. After importing the user from AD the user accounts aren't merge. I can it see by one user. The old sharepoint account has the old surname and the imported the new one. If the user logged in the sharepoint, we see the old and wrong name.

My question is now, how can I merge these account? I would have the imported accounts as information about a user.

Best regards,
Robert

Sharepoint for Document Management System - Limitations !

$

We have sharepoint 2013 . We are planning to use Sharepoint 2013 for document management  in order to store and archive various type of documents , mostly PDF file.   We have 7 departments in our organization and we are expecting thousands of documents from each department .  Each department will have documents by size total 700 GB to 1TB  .

What we knew that sharepoint Content Database is storing all documents, data etc.. and Content Database should be withing 200GB limit.    In this case, how Sharepoint can be considered as DMS?   How to increase size of contend database.  Can we use  multiple content database (like 10 x 200 GB) for a site ?  If yes, how this will impact on speed and ease of use etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Regards

Ahmed
