SharePoint 2013 - Load Balancer - Classic Azure IaaS (non-ARM) - Special configuration settings needed? How to troubleshoot potential issues?

$

When using an Azure (Classic not ARM) External Load Balancer for two SharePoint 2013 Web Front Ends (WFE's). Are there any special considerations regarding timeout, persistence (2 tuple, 3 tuple, etc.), or anything else to take into account? Or are the default values here fine? I am potentially having an issue with the load balancer for my WFE's where part of the page will load properly but the rest of it will not due to the SharePoint (FedAuth) cookie magically going away from the browser session halfway through the page load. Is there anyway to troubleshoot it effectively without removing the load balanced set from the VM's?

Recently Viewed List Items per User

Hello,

I am currently trying to configure a web part to show up on the results.aspx page that shows the most recently viewed list items per user.  I have looked at quite a few articles to try and find a way to accomplish this, but nothing has jumped out as the solution.  My end goal is to have my results.aspx show this:

Recently Viewed
"Users most recently viewed items."

Search Results
Currently set to show the most recently created list item from specific lists in a Site Collection.

I started with adding in a Search Results web part.  I thought I could use the "Change Query" feature to get the results I wanted, and I think I can get there, but I just need to tweak the query.  In the Build Your Query window, I have the Query set to {User.Name} and the Sorting set to ViewsRecent:Ascending.  I'm wondering if I have the right Sort by variable selected, and if there are any Keyword or Property Filter variables I need to add to get the Results to show the most recently viewed items from the user that is logged in.

Thank You

However, I keep getting various errors such as the user objects being null. Is there a working script that can do this?

Responsive SharePoint 2013

Hi

I want to deliver SharePoint 2013 responsive site that affects all site collections in a greenfield site.

I've seen resources that mention editing the master page and adding a css file but this would be needed for every site collection?

Is there a way to deploy a solution that affects all site collections or is the preferred way to create a wsp of master and css file and activate on every site collection as and when created ?

Whats the pro's and cons of device channels, could this meet my requirements?

Thanks

URL not found when trying to setup apps on a SharePoint 2013 server.

I followed the setup instructions attechnet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161236.aspx and it seemed to work, but I’m getting a URL not found error when selecting the app in SharePoint.

The apps domain seems to be setup ok,  if I ping it with {anythinggoeshere}.TEST-APP.LOCAL it will respond.

The 'App Domain' in 'Configure App URLs' is set to the apps domain that I made.

The app appears to be accepted ok through SharePoint 2013 Central Administration, on the SharePoint server machine.

This shows up in the local catalogue under ‘From Your Organisation' and I can add the app from here to a users’ site, but any app added to the local catalogue errors with an invalid URL when selected.

Any idea where I could have gone wrong? What stage of the above MS instructions configured incorrectly is most likely to cause this type of error?

Or is it more likely something wrong with the setup of the Apps Catalogue itself?

I saw instruction for setting this up attechnet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161234.aspx, but I couldn’t setup a catalogue like this because a catalogue was already setup in SharePoint, although it wasn’t usable before I did the setup instructions from fp161236.aspx as the app services weren't there. I don’t know what setup information was put in this catalogue, so my question is how can I see, and change, the settings for this?

e.g. step 7 of thefp161234.aspx instructions says: In the URL box, fill in the URL to use for the site., but how do I know what  URL is setup already, and how do I know what URL to use for what site anyway? Is this another IIS site that I need to setup (or is possible already setup!) on the SharePoint server?

The URL of the app looks like the following:

http://apps-acc0b1b6690ada.test-app.local/subsite3/QualityReporting/Pages/Default.aspx?...

But it looks like apps-acc0b1b6690ada.test-app.local isn’t found.

I’m still a bit confused as to how all this is supposed to work!

SharePoint - Excel error... "this workbook was opened from a server in read-only mode"

Hi,

I have a document which has unique permissions set (I gave myself contribute access to it). I do not have access anywhere else on the site. Now I try accessing the document library; I get access denied - understandably so. So I gave myself read permission on the doc lib; and then tried accessing the document - I get credentials  pop up. If I provide credentials, I keep getting it again n again. If I discard it (close the pop up) I get the file opened, but in 'Read Only' mode.

Why is this happening?

****UPDATE****

If I grant even read access on Site level; I am able to edit the file. This should not be dependent on site permissions as the file as unique permissions set and I have contribute access on it.

Hi All,

I want to know that, is there a way to have in detail reports of a particular SharePoint 2013 Site, a Site collection, a document or about a library? Can we use that data to build a dashboard?

Please elaborate the capabilities.

I am doing the migration of SharePoint 2010 to 2013

I got the following error when I mount the content database

File [Features\ReportServer\ReportViewer.dwp] is referenced [1] times in the database [sp_Content_IA], but is not installed on the current farm. Please install any feature/solution which contains this file.34f69fb3-63b9-4cf1-be23-e99af5555e85

The SharePoint 2010 Servers have SQL 2008 R2 Reporting Services Add-in and Microsoft Office Web Apps.

How can I do it in SharePoint 2013 ?

We are using sp 2013 oob listviews and FilterFiled1 and FilterValue1. It works perfect except when text description itself contains ***. Listview does not return any item when column value has ***. Is there any limitation?

Hidden user list and UPS - When do they sync or how can i force it

Hi

We have got a working UPS.

This Hidden user list really does not make sence to me...

I think if I know when a user's details get added to the list it might help?

The UPS has got all the details and is up to date.

The user list for some site collections is up 2 date.

Thanks

How to install SharePoint 2013, if Domain User profile are available in Linux server (Open LDAP).

I want to install SharePoint 2013 by using a domain user account as per MS guideline, but the problem is, all the domain user profiles are available in Linux server (Open LDAP).

The next challenge is, how to provide SharePoint sites access to end users while they all are available in the Linux server directory.

FYI: I have done the installation using local account for a time being, but still domain users are not accessible within a SharePoint site.

Please suggest any workaround or resolution...

Setup DNS domain for SharePoint 2013 Add-ins (SharePoint Apps) on premise.

Hi

I read the following from Microsoft TechNet concerning a security issue when configure domain for SharePoint Apps.

" ..By using a separate domain name, apps for SharePoint are separated from SharePoint sites to prevent unauthorized access to user data and to reduce the possibility of cross-site scripting attacks. The use of separate URLs for apps for SharePoint and SharePoint sites is called app isolation...)

the following are our SharePoint domain and from that I want to create a domain structure for our SharePoint Apps:

current SharePoint domain:   spweb.actxt.net
For SharePoint Apps,  I plan to create a new DNS zone spwebapps.actxt.net and create a wildcard DNS record there and also create a new SSL certificate.

I think this should be what I need to prevent possible security issue with cross-site scripting attacks.

If anyone have worked with SharePoint Apps on premise or have better way or think what I have still not good enough,  please advise or comment.

Thanks

Sharepoint 2013 backup restore query(user profiles)

We have a sharepoint portal where there is a need of nightly backup(not point of failure).

Now if we just take content db backup(excluding workflow manager, search and user profile) and in case server crashes and we rebuild another farm and restore this DB(we will do user profile sync again on new server and will setup workflow manager)

will it have proper users in assigned to columns of different sharepoint lists on new server? or do we also have to take user profile DB backup. We do not use search or long running workflows so thats not needed but important question is about 50k user profiles and hundreds assigned to columns and other people/profile columns in sharepoint list.

SharePoint 2013 - Adding Alert - Send Alerts To - only can see AD user accounts and no group accounts

$

Hi

My environment is SharePoint 2013 Enterprice edition

I tried to add an alert notification for a document library to an AD security group with email enabled (as suggested in many blog I found).  I granted this group full access to the site and the document library.  in the site collection permission setting or the library permission setting,  I can enter the group name or group email and the system found it just fine.

When I tried to set the alert, I entered either this AD group email or group name in the Send Alert To box,  there is nothing found.  And I noticed that I can't enter any AD group and the system returned none found.  Look like as this box, SharePoint only allow individual user account to be found and enter here.

Is this by design,  or there is something can be done to set alert to AD group that I don't know about.  Can someone please help explain or advice?

I found a reference showing similar to my issue and it is also not resolved.

Unable to Update Service Account for SharePoint Distributed Cache

$

I am trying to change the account used for distributed cache from the farm account to a less privileged service account. I perform the following.

Stop-SPDistributedCacheServiceInstance -Graceful -Verbose

$farm = Get-SPFarm
$cacheService = $farm.Services | where {$_.Name -eq "AppFabricCachingService"}
$accnt = Get-SPManagedAccount -Identity 'domain\account'
$cacheService.ProcessIdentity.CurrentIdentityType = "SpecificUser"
$cacheService.ProcessIdentity.ManagedAccount = $accnt
$cacheService.ProcessIdentity.Update()
$cacheService.ProcessIdentity.Deploy()

Get-SPServiceInstance | where typename -like "*cach*" | Start-SPServiceInstance

The account name changes and the AppFabric Caching Service starts.

However, afterwards I cannot connect to the cache cluster anymore.
