Best practices to migrate to SQL 2014 from SQL 2012 for SharePoint 2013

Hi,

The current SharePoint 2013 server farm uses SQL Server 2012. We have setup a brand new server with SQL Server 2014. We are planning to migrate from SQL 12 to SQL 14. What is the best practice or recommendations to do this migration?

Our plan is to backup all config, content databases from existing SQL 12 and restore them to SQL 14. Then update the alias name in cliconfig.exe file on all servers in the SharePoint farm to point to new SQL Server. Does this plan works? Are there any issues in this method? What additional steps I have to take if this plan works? Please suggest.

Thanks, Krishna

my environment = Sharepoint 2013 + sql 2014. 1 wfe, 1 app, 1 indx.

recent upgrade from sp1 tp sept 2015 CU

i am now running into the following issues. im not sure what is causing this issue, as its not telling me what service appliaction is causing this, or what service account. the data source is showing as the appserver instead of the SQL server. i think that is the issue, but im not sure how to fix that. any ideas?

Missing Server side Dependencies - MissingWebPart

$

One of our sites since we migrated to SharePoint 2013 has been triggering the missing server side dependencies message in Health Analyzer.  Up until this point it hasn't stopped us from applying patches etc.  I figured I would get around to cleaning all these message up and I have all but one.  I have read and tried everything on the web in regards to identifying the site that contains this error web part.  However, those pages do not contain the web part and I have removed all version history of these pages.  I do not want to directly modify these entries in SQL as mentioned by many users out there that Microsoft does not support this approach.  The third party web part no longer exists from what I have researched so this isn't even an option to reinstall and fix this.  I'm hoping someone can provide some guidance on how to permanently remove this error(other then simply ignoring them)

[MissingWebPart] WebPart class [066a87e7-a7eb-4f87-4470-babd118e0658] (class [SPUserPoll.Presentation.WebParts.PollDisplayWebPart] from assembly [SPUserPoll.Presentation.WebParts, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b504d4b6c1e1a6e5]) is referenced [115]

OneDrive for Business Critical Error - OneDrive for Business needs to close because there isn't enough memory available

Hello,

A user is currently experiencing the following problem after using the Onedrive for business application included in the 2013 Office suite:

"OneDrive for Business needs to close because there isn't enough memory available. Please close some programs and restart.

Error Description: NOt enough storage is available to process this command.

HRESULT: 0x80070008

AssertTag: 0x0cd4ef68"

I have researched and tried re-syncing the files with groove.exe /clean /all command but the message still intermittently appears. Note: I used the "groove.exe" program from the following directory: c:\program files\Microsoft office\office12\ instead of the "office15" directory because the "office15" directory was empty of files.

unable to install prerequisites WCFDataServices*

I am manually installing the prerequisites for a new app server. Everything worked (manually) except WCFDataServices.exe and WCFDataServices56.exe

When I launch these files, sometimes there is no response at all. Other times I get a prompt and click Yes;  then nothing happens. No errors, no following screens, nothing.

I have tried launching from Explorer, from a CMD prompt, from PowerShell. Same result.

The ExecutionPolicy is set to Unrestricted.

Any ideas?

Sharepoint 2013 PWA Disaster in database server

$

we got disaster on database server and we have backups from databases related to sharepoint and PWA such as (content database and search .... etc), except sql server system databases (master, msdb ...etc.)

we return back the databases related to SharePoint and PWA (Project server) but we could not return the master and msdb database for sql server, so we lost the uses and roles stored in the sql server system databases before the disaster.

after we return the databases, I went to security-->logins forlder on each database and I defind the logins on sql server.

we switch on the servers to start work, unfortunately it is not working fine. and the sharepoint central administration site is working but some pages inside it gave errors, also the PWA it is working but when you try to enter to any project it gave an error. also the report BI center site I canot access it.

after a while we could recover the old server and we took the mdf and ldf for the SQL Server system databases.

any suggestion or help?

/_vti_pvt/ .cnf files

Hi everyone, thanks for any help on this.  We have recently been scanning our external, anonymous sites for PCI compliance. We are getting some alerts on 'Microsoft IIS Multiple .cnf File Information Disclosure' saying that there are .cnf files in /_vti_pvt/ that are giving server info out.

This link gives info about the vulnerability - https://www.tenable.com/plugins/index.php?view=single&id=10575

There are three files in the /_vti_pvt folder, buildversion.cnf, service.cnf, and services.cnf. Every one of our sites created from SharePoint have these three files. From what I've been reading these files are from FrontPage Extensions. http://thuansoldier.net/?p=4298

In a lab I've tested out renaming them to .old and I'm not seeing any issues with the site. I'm trying to figure out if they are truly remnants from FrontPage Extensions are they still needed? If not why does SharePoint still install them when creating web applications?

Thanks for any help on this

Weird BDC Permission Error

$

I got a weird thing going on with my BDC in my SP2013 and I can't figure what is causing the problem when I try to access any external lists added to my application.

I have a nice powershell script that not only deploy my model to the BDC but it also adds the ECTs to my website and then apply the permissions to each one of the ECT in the model, then when I browse to the website to check the newly added external lists (ECTs) I get the error "Access denied by Business Data Connectivity. Correlation xxx", so the only way to solve the problem is visiting the Central Admin website and opening the BDC model, then I choose"External Systems",  and by clicking on the model name I go to "Permissions" and then I need to check the box"Propagate permissions to all External Content Types that belong to this External System. Doing so will overwrite existing permissions." - after completing this everything works! - The screen below shows my "fix":

The correlation error doesn't give much information and I can't make sense of what is really telling me:

UserProfile Import Active Directory

We had a migration done last year and I'm just now finding out that I don't believe our user profile sync is working or may even be set up.  When an employee leaves, I delete their MySite and their UserProfile.  But when a new user logs in, the site thinks they're the old user.  I can see in the UserProfiles_Full table that the old info is kept, so I checked and there isn't even a Sync Connection.  I'm trying to set up one now, but I'm getting errors.

Can someone point me in the direction on how to create this?  When I add what I think is the proper connection settings, I get LDAP Server Unavailable.

And yes I've asked the vendor who helped with our migration for help as well.

I have created a CNAME record in our dmz record but it is not working.

Recently we had  moved a Site (Site A)  from SP2013 Farm to another site (Site B) in the same Farm  as a subsite. Sharepoint 2013: credentials for wrong server/site collection requested on document open

$

0

Hi,

We have just upgraded to SharePoint 2013 and a couple of our users have reported a problem opening documents. When they click on the document in the browser, the application (say, Excel) opens and then they are prompted for credentials - but while the link as displayed in the status bar of the browser is in the form of:

http://ourserver/sites/site/library/document.xls

The credentials box states it requires credentials for ourserver.full.qualified.domain

If the user cancels the credentials check, the document opens, followed by another credentials request, this time for the site collection for the SharePoint central admin function. Cancelling this request leaves the document open but any attempt at checkout will have failed and the document cannot be saved.

It only happens for a very small percentage of users and I've tried clearing the credentials manager and making sure that the local intranet sites option is set to auto-detect. A user who cannot edit documents cannot edit them on the PC of someone who can - the problem follows them - but if a user who can edit documents uses a failing PC, it works fine.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? And can anyone suggest where I can look for a solution?

Thanks,

Tony Spratt.

Site Template URL Tokens

I am developing a custom site with its own Search Page for a fully self-contained experience.

I am curious if there is a token I can use on the Search Settings for "<label for="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_customResultsPageButton">Send queries to a custom results page URL."</label>

Where I can have the page "/SitePages/Search.aspx" but have it go to the current site every time, so when I deploy a template, search will work immediately

I tried something like

~site/SitePages/Search.aspx

<label for="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_customResultsPageButton">But nothing works unless I hard-code the current site in the Settings.  Is that something I am just going to have to live with or is there a token I can use?</label>

Thanks

Open Excel file in browser does not work. System force to download file

Open files in browser is on for DocLib.

No errors. Just File downloading dialog box.

What have I missed in configuration of Excel Services?

How do I control content/info Crawl/Indexing

Rather than configuring search to operate continuously (or every X minutes/hours)

I would like to be able to tell the Crawler that Document has been added to Content Library - so Crawl/index that

Additionally I'd like to be able to tell the Crawler to run when we update/modify Document (or its' Metadata)

Is this possible with Sharepoint 2013

Wrap items on Top Navigation Bar (post-upgrade)

$

I just completed a site collection upgrade from 2010 to 2013. Everything looks and works great except my top navigation bar is no longer wrapping the list of sub-sites like it used to, forcing users to scroll the page to the far right to access those sites.

I have seen some posts on modifying the master pages of the site to fix this by using ItemWrap="true" but none of these solutions has worked for me. I've also tried looking at the code snippets in the Design Manager but this isn't working either.

Has anyone successfully gotten this to work?

Global Navigation won't wrap after upgrade to SharePoint 2013

$

Most of our site collections have two rolls or more links on the global navigation bar, after upgraded one site collection to 2013, all links are on a single line. Is this a bug? Not useable when you have to scroll all the way to the right to click on a link. Thanks.

Note: this site has everything out of the box, so we expect the upgrade to be painless.

SharePoint offers to save DOCX files instead of opening in OWA

$

Background
I have Office Web Apps on dedicated server. Both internal and external URLs arehttp://owa-server.fqdn.name. AllowHTTP is enabled in farm. SharePoint 2013 farm WOPI binding is configured. "Open in application" feature is disabled. Document library is configured to open documents in browser.

Issue
When user clicks on DOCX document, SharePoint offers to save document instead of opening in browser. XLSX and even DOTX documents are opened well. When I click on ellipsis against DOCX document, I can explicitly open it in browser. Document preview works well.

Findings
Could not find anything meaningful in event viewer and ULS on both SharePoint and OWA servers.
Along with this development farm I have a test farm with pretty the same configuration, same farm solutions, etc.. Say farm A is affected, where I experience an issues and farm B is similar but there is no such issue there.
When I click on ellipsis for XLSX in farm A, I can see "View in Browser" and "Edit in Browser".
When I click on ellipsis for DOCX in farm A, I can see only "Edit in Browser".
When I click on ellipsis for DOCX in farm B, I can see both "View in Browser" and "Edit in Browser".

I have also found some correlation in layout. I investigated HTML layout of document link and noticed that it is different depending on file type:

XLSX in farm A: <a class="ms-listlink ms-draggable" aria-label="test, undefined" onmousedown="return VerifyHref(this,event,'1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','1http://kunskapsbanken.dev.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/_layouts/15/xlviewer.aspx?id=/Shared%20Documents/test.xlsx')" onclick="return DispEx(this,event,'TRUE','FALSE','FALSE','SharePoint.OpenDocuments.3','1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','','1http://kunskapsbanken.dev.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/_layouts/15/xlviewer.aspx?id=/Shared%20Documents/test.xlsx','','31','0','0','0x7fffffffffffffff')" href="/Shared Documents/test.xlsx" DragId="5">test</a>

DOTX in farm A: <a class="ms-listlink ms-draggable" aria-label="SPMeta2-MSWord-Template, undefined" onmousedown="return VerifyHref(this,event,'1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','1http://kunskapsbanken.dev.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=/Shared%20Documents/SPMeta2-MSWord-Template.dotx&amp;action=default')" onclick="return DispEx(this,event,'TRUE','FALSE','FALSE','SharePoint.OpenDocuments.2','1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','','1http://kunskapsbanken.dev.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=/Shared%20Documents/SPMeta2-MSWord-Template.dotx&amp;action=default','','31','0','0','0x7fffffffffffffff')" href="/Shared Documents/SPMeta2-MSWord-Template.dotx" DragId="1">SPMeta2-MSWord-Template</a>

DOCX in farm B: <a class="ms-listlink ms-draggable" aria-label="wr2, undefined" onmousedown="return VerifyHref(this,event,'1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','1http://sharepoint.test.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/sites/test2/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=/sites/test2/Shared%20Documents/wr2.docx&amp;action=default')" onclick="return DispEx(this,event,'TRUE','FALSE','FALSE','SharePoint.OpenDocuments.3','1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','','1http://sharepoint.test.se.ema.pwcinternal.com/sites/test2/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=/sites/test2/Shared%20Documents/wr2.docx&amp;action=default','','1','0','0','0x7fffffffffffffff')" href="/sites/test2/Shared Documents/wr2.docx" DragId="1">wr2</a>

DOCX in farm A: <a class="ms-listlink ms-draggable" aria-label="test, undefined" onmousedown="return VerifyHref(this,event,'1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','')" onclick="return DispEx(this,event,'TRUE','FALSE','FALSE','SharePoint.OpenDocuments.3','1','SharePoint.OpenDocuments','','','','1','0','0','0x7fffffffffffffff')" href="/sites/test2/Shared Documents/test.docx" DragId="1">test</a>

So one of VerifyHref parameters is '' instead of url.

What I tried so far:
1. using different WFE servers
2. using different web applications
3. to create new site collection
4. to change OWA urls
5. IIS reset
6. WFE restart

I have checked get-spwopibinding and it shows docx view action:

Application     : Word
Extension       : DOCX
ProgId          :
Action          : view
IsDefaultAction : True
ServerName      : owa-server.fqdn.name
WopiZone        : external-http

I would be delighted if anyone can suggest what else to dig.

Hi,

User Profile Sync was working fine but all of sudden it's giving me big head ache.
