Hybrid: Delve and User Profile Sync

$

Hi All,

I just installed the September 2015 CU for my on-premise SharePoint 2013 farm with the new great hybrid features. It seems like when the "One Drive Only" is selected from the Hybrid section of Central Admin, requests for user profiles are forwarded to Delve. e.g. clicking on "about me" from SharePoint, I will redirect me to my Delve Profile.

Just as background, we do have DirSync pushing our AD objects to the Office 365 Directory Service.

This is all good, however the SharePoint online admin interface is somewhat limited. The user profile service on Office 365 (or SharePoint Online, or OneDrive for Business, I'm not sure what to call it.) did not pull or map all the attributes from the directory service. Like, thumbnailPhoto and some other custom attributes we added to our User Profiles on-Prem.

Problem 1) I can't add or modify any properties (from Manage User Properties) because my Source Data Connections are blank

Moving On... I also need to filter some of the objects that are getting synced from Office 365 directory service, not all user objects need a Profile. So I was going to go to my "Configure Synchronization Connections" like in my on-prem version of SharePoint and surprise, there's no synchronization section at all. it looks like I'm stuck with an extra 3700 profiles being synced that shouldn't be?

Problem 2) Delve user profile service is missing the Syncronization Section so I can't exclude users by OU.
On-Premise User profile service

Delve User Profile Service:

I believe that both of these problems are related. Any thoughts on a solution. We don't need Delve right now however we are using OneDrive cloud service; I'm assuming there's no way of separating these two but I would be okay with using our on-premise My Site host (with our on-prem User Profiles) as a solution.

Thanks in advance!

User Profile Service Failing to Start When Using SQL AlwaysOn

I'm posting this in the SharePoint forum but given that SQL is such a key component I hope to get some input from that side as well.  Here is my problem, configuration and troubleshooting steps I have already taken.  Input is much appreciated.

Farm Configuration: SharePoint 2013 deployed into AWS.  The farm is spread across 2 availability zones, each zone contains 1 web server, 1 app server and 1 SQL server each in their own subnet.  I have built the farm and installed all necessary service applications using PowerShell scripts I've used many times before.  SQL version is 2012 Enterprise set up in an AlwaysOn configuration.  The farm is healthy and stable (except for UPS).  All SharePoint servers are using a SQL alias pointing to the SQL Listener and all connection strings have MultiSubnetFailover flag set to true.

Problem: The required FIM services fail to start in this configuration with the message

(Service start up has failed.  A connection to SQL Server could not be established because of an authentication failure.)

FIM services are set to run as the Farm Admin account (which is a local admin during this process) and has dbowner, public, and securityadmin roles in SQL and everything else in the farm is acting normally so I struggle to believe there really is an authentication failure.  In the event viewer I see this:

.Net SqlClient Data Provider: 2 :  : System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

   at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject)

   at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionFactory.GetConnection(DbConnection owningConnection)

   at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionClosed.OpenConnection(DbConnection outerConnection, DbConnectionFactory connectionFactory)

   at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Open()

   at Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Data.DatabaseConnection.Open(SqlConnection connection)

Troubleshooting: Now here is the really odd part, if I change my SQL alias to point only to my primary SQL replica instead of the Listener I can get this all working.  This isn't a long term solution because it defeats the whole purpose of setting up AlwaysOn but is interesting feedback in the troubleshooting process.  I've also noticed that performance of the site as a whole seems quicker as well.

My question is if AlwaysOn has any known gotchas in a SharePoint environment that I have missed and in general if AlwaysOn is thought of as less performant (especially in a multi-subnet scenario) than other high availability SQL configurations.  I know there is a lot here to take in but I appreciate any push in the right direction.

What kind of resources does Copy-SPSite need?

We're testing out SP2013. I've got a root site collection of 150G, and I want to duplicate it to a new site collection.

I'm using Copy-SPSite - creating the new site collection in a new database.

The virtual server has 24G memory and did have 400G of drive space for SQL (this is a test single server), but after 2 hours it ran out of disk. We threw another 100G at it but I can't tell if the Copy-SPSite is still going or not. There's still activity in SQL so I guess it's crunching along.

But how much space should I allocate when we do this for real? I would like to know if throwing more disk at it will help for now or if I should give up and terminate this job.

If this plan works I want to duplicate this 150G site 7 times. Copy, delete what I don't want. Copy again, delete what I don't want. Copy again, delete what I don't want. The poor gals version of splitting a site collection.

Does Copy-SPSite use 2ce as much space as the original database?

Active Directory (AD) Security Groups and Distribution Groups not Showing up in SharePoint to Select From

Hello,

I have set up user profiles to synchronize SharePoint with my AD and import security groups. However, when I try to add an AD security group to permissions for a library, not all of them are listed. Some are, but not all of them.   I do have the security groups and distribution lists selected in the synchronization connection.  SharePoint can find the user profiles, but no groups.  How can I determine that SharePoint has really imported all security groups from AD?

Thanks,

Paul

Workflow e-mails not send to trusted domain

I have SharePoint on Domain A. A domain trust with Domain B is established. Users of Domain Bcan view and work with SharePoint.

But workflow emails are not send to users of that domain. When I receive e-mails from a workflow the names of Domain B users are not shown in the TO: field.

E-Mails are only delivered to one special user in Domain B, who is the administrator of that domain.

How I can send e-mails to all users?

Windows Server 2012, SQ 2012 SP1 and SP Enterprise. (2 WFE, 1 APP server, 1 DB server).

Reading the instructions on http://technet.microsoft.com/library/ee748644.aspx.

I am not what server in the farm they are asking to install the feature pack below ?

  1. Install ADOMD.NET from the SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack

Would creating a content type hub at the farm level usingSharePoint 2013 Managed Metadata serviceallow the same contents types to be used in both the project server and a SharePoint site collection so that documents using content types can be shared and migrated between the project server and a SharePoint site collection? Thanks

Know the document libraries that do not have versioning enabled.

Hi,

I have a site collection (Host named site collections) and many sub sites (even more subsites into these subsites) with so many document libraries. I want to enable versioning on all the document libraries in my site collection or if there is any way to know the names/path of all the document libraries which don't have versioning enabled. Any Help ?

Also is there any way to enable versioning automatically whenever any document library is added to the SharePoint ?

Thanks, Rishi Pandit.

Secure Store Service "Access Denied" - no pass phrase is recorded

$

Hi all,

Our prod SP is somewhat simple (but demands on it (and us) is growing).

IN Central Admin, if you go to Manage Service Applications > Secure Store Service > Manage you get a "Access is denied to the Secure Store Service." message in the UI - there are two options "Generate Key" and "Refresh Key"

Our test site which we thought was an identical copy of prod, doesn't appear to have the service setup and you are greeted with a screen with the only available option to "generate a key". (we haven't been able to find any pass phrases that we are 100% certain are from the initial configuration of this service). we found 1 pass phrase reference, but can't confirm its purpose exactly)

two questisons we have are:

1) does this mean that prod HAS the "store" setup or has something else gone wrong? If so any ideas?

2) IF the store has been setup, but we can't find the passphrase and/or can't get it working - we assume we can destroy and recreate this store - but is there any way to audit what might be using stuff in the store somehow?

Its unlikely that anything outside of SP is using it and I guess we can always restore... but we'd like to know what we're up against...

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

- sure I'm noJedi but that's no reason to stop trying to make stuff levitate! -

SP1 Upgrade Issues?

Just wondering if many people have had any problems upgrading sharepoint 2013 to SP1? A few google searches reveal some problems. Does it generally go pretty smoothly?

I run sharepoint, its SQL and server off of a single machine is it okay to take a snapshot of the machine in this instance to fall back on? Some sites say you shouldn't take a snap shot of a Sharepoint installation.

Sending scanned documents via email to SharePoint 2013 document library not working

Hi

I have configured incoming mail in SharePoint 2013 in my web front end server. I am in need to send the scanned documents from printer machine to my document library via email. For that installed and configured SMTP service in my SharePoint web front end server and enabled all the ports between scanner/printer machine and SharePoint 2013 web front end server machine.

When I try to send scan documents from scanner to my SharePoint 2013, i am unable to receive any mail in my drop or queue folder whereas i can see the scanner/printer machine IP entry in SMTP server log files meaning that printer machine able to reach my SharePoint 2013 server.

What could be the cause that I am not able to receive mail in my drop/queue folder and how to fix this issue such that my SharePoint 2013 library can receive incoming mails?

Thank in Advance,

Siva

Unable to Assign Setup Account SharePoint_Shell_Access

$

Hello all,

I recently installed a SharePoint 2013 three-tier farm (1 app server, 1 WFE, 1 SQL, per specs, can provide more info if needed). After installation I attempted to create a Search Service Application with PowerShell so I could have control over the database names.

However, when I get to this line after defining variables:

  • $searchServiceApp = New-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication -Name $serviceAppName -ApplicationPool $saAppPoolName -DatabaseName $searchDBName

I get this error:

  • New-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication “ A database exception occurred when creating Search Application: Cannot open database “WSS_Logging” requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user ‘DOMAIN\sa-setup’. At line:1 char:21 + $searchServiceApp = New-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication –Name $serviceAppNa… + CategoryInfo: InvalidData: (Microsoft.Orrice…viceApplication: NewSearchServiceApplication) [New-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication], ApplicationException + FullyQUalifiedErrorId: Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Cmdlet.NewSearchServiceApplication

And when I try to run the following to correct that:

  • Add-SPShellAdmin -UserName DOMAIN\sa-setup

I get this error:

  • Add-SPShellAdmin: “Cannot add DOMAIN\sa-setup to the SharePoint_Shell_Access role of the database SharePoint_Config. A possible cause of this error is that the account name was already added to the database as a login using a different user name than the account name.” At line:1 char:1 + Add-SPShellAdmin –UserName DOMAIN\sa-setup + CategoryInfo: InvalidData: (Microsoft.Share…AddSPShellAdmin: SPCmdletAddSPShellAdmin) [Add-SPShellAdmin], ArgumentException + FullyQualifiedErrorId: Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell.SPCmdletAppSPShellAdmin

When I do the following in SQL as another way to accomplish the task:

  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Expand Security -> Logins and double click on the Setup account
  3. Click on User Mapping, choose SharePoint_Config, check SharePoint_Shell Access

I get this error:

  • Add member failed for DatabaseRole ‘SharePoint_Shell_Access’ (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo). Additional information: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo). Cannot use the special principal ‘dbo’. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error 15405)

And for what it’s worth:

  • Setup account is a local administrator on both servers in farm
  • Setup account is in WSS_ADMIN_WPG on both servers in farm
  • Setup account is in WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_V4 on both servers in farm
  • Setup account is in WSS_IUSRS on both servers in farm (I don’t see IIS_WPG and found article suggesting this is equivalent)
  • Setup account has a SQL login and holds roles dbcreator, public, securityadmin and serveradmin
  • I tried running SharePoint Management Shell with and without running as administrator and with Farm account and with a personal admin account, but no joy
  • I’ve found a number of articles that say that if an account has db_owner, it can’t also have SharePoint_Shell_Access (or any other roles). But isn’t SharePoint requiring both of the Setup account?
    • Per “Plan for Administrative and Service Accounts in SharePoint 2013“ (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263445.aspx): “If you run Windows PowerShell cmdlets that affect a database, [the Setup account] must be a member of the db_owner fixed database role for the database.” This implies that the setup account will be running those cmdlets and states that it should have db_owner.
    • From How to add a user to the SharePoint_Shell_Access role on a content database (http://andersrask.sharepointspace.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=12): “The user assigned these permissions will typically be the install account used to setup the farm.” This is a sentiment I've seen echoed in many other articles as well, and it has always been my experience that service applications are provisioned with the Setup account.

How can I get my Setup account to have the db_owner it requires per TechNet and the sharepoint_shell_access it requires to use PowerShell to provision service applications?

And if it can't hold both, what account does Microsoft expect one to provision SharePoint service apps via PowerShell with?

Thanks,

Shae

SharePoint Foundation 2013 keeps saying IIS web is not installed, but it is installed.

I'm trying to install SharePoint Foundation 2013 in a Windows 2012 R2 Essential server for testing, but I hit a very unusual road block.

According to the logs, it says it's pending a reboot, which is not true, since I've tried that several times already.

Investing further it reveals "error 2" it refers to IIS web not being installed, yet that is also not true, since I installed everything for IIS and it still complains that IIS web is not installed.

I don't usually ask for help here as most issues are usually found online, however I've combed the web, and tried all the different solutions other people have faced with SP20013 and 2012R2, but still is a no go.

So lets see if we can figure this one out together, so that others experiencing the same problem can breath a little easier.

Extending Web Application - File Not Found

$

A quick search with no results and a ton of frustration are leading me here...I am attempting to use the very basic "Extend" functionality for a Web Application. We are trying to at the least add SSL/443 to SharePoint, if not convert entirely to 443.

I have tried simply extending the Web Application, or deleting the IIS Site (from Manage Web Applications -> Delete -> Remove SharePoint from IIS Web Site) and then extending the Web Application. Both are failing with the same error "File not found." A review of the ULS logs shows that the site is failing to find the web.config for the brand new IIS site it should be creating...which I guess makes sense, but shouldn't it be creating this file?

I am tempted to mess around with the newly created site in IIS to make it work, but we are doing this in Dev as a proof of concept to do this in production. Needless to say, this needs to become much more reproducible before we'd even consider doing it in production.

Some things I've tried:

  • Extending a Web Application with an existing site
  • Extending a Web Application without an existing site
  • Creating a new Web Application and extending existing port 80 site
  • Creating a new Web Application and extending after deleting existing port 80 site

I haven't tried creating a site 443 out of the gate mainly because I am afraid this functionality failing could be an indication of something wrong with the farm and want to fix this correctly, rather than deleting a Web Application and creating it 443 from the get-go. Also, this method would obviously involve downtime.

AppFabric Error 1603

Fresh 2013 SP install (manual) - gets stuck on Prod Config Wizard 3 or 10 (Creating Config database)?

SharePoint 2013 Audience validation failed for site

I currently have a test SharePoint 2013 environment and recently run into a problem with the Content Type Hub.  I have deleted the old content type hub (http://contenttypehub), the database the site was in and the Managed Metadata Service associated with it.  I have recreated the MMS with a new content type hub site (http://contenttypes).

When creating Host Named Site Collections I get the "sorry something went wrong" error and the below is in the ULS log.

It looks like this is looking for the old site but I cannot fins anywhere to change this behaviour.

Any insight/help appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi,

After configuring SAML, now I am having trouble moving AD users to the ADFS format. I am following the below articles.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sambetts/archive/2014/09/03/how-to-migrate-sharepoint-users-to-adfs.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/pranab/archive/2012/06/27/sharepoint-user-migration-ad-to-adfs.aspx

I get this error in the management shell for all users

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Darius

Moving 'i:0#.w|domain\abd' to 'i:05.t|ADFS|abc@abd.org'...

Move-SPUser : identityToGetKeyFor
At line:23 char:1
+ Move-SPUser -Identity $user -NewAlias $username -ignoresid -Confirm:$false

And here is the script I enter:

$groupprefix = "c:0-.t|ADFS|"

$userprefix = "i:05.t|ADFS|"

$usersuffix = "@abd.org"

# Get all of the users in a web application

$users = Get-SPUser -web "http://sitename.org"

# Loop through each of the users in the web app

foreach($user in $users)

{

# Create an array that will be used to split the user name

$a=@()

$userlogin = $user.UserLogin

$username = “”

if($userlogin.Contains("i:")) # for users

{

$a = $userlogin.split('\')

$username = $userprefix + $a[1] + $usersuffix

}

elseif($userlogin.Contains("c:")) # for groups

{

$a = $displayname.split('\')

$username = $groupprefix + $a[1]

}

if ($userName -Like ("*" + [Environment]::UserName +"*")) {

Write-Host "Skipping this user '$user' so as to not loose SPA full-control rights..."

}

else{

if ($userName -ne '') {

Write-Host "Moving '$user' to '$username'..."

Move-SPUser –Identity $user –NewAlias $username -ignoresid -Confirm:$false

Cannot convert SharePoint Standard to Enterprise license key

Hi All,

We have SharePoint Standard 2013 edition on the Production environment and running since Oct 2014.
New business requirements have come and requires some BI features.

The SharePoint Enterprise 2013 edition is purchased and while keying the PRD environment (which is SharePoint Standard 2013),Central Administration >> Upgrade and Migration >> Convert Farm License  the product key textbox is greyed out.

Q: How can I update the license key from Standard to Enterprise Edition? The SharePoint UI is not able to help. Is it possible to update the license key using PowerShell?

Thanks in advance.

Sandy
