Sharepoint 2010 Vs Sharepoint 2013

Hello

I am planning to upgrade to sharepoint 2013 in production environment. I want to know if SharePoint 2013 is stable or not?

I am trying to find out if there are any issues with SharePoint 2013. And also, what are major differences between 2010 and 2013?

All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Workflow 2013 Platform

$

0

Hello everyone,

Background Info:

I have two SharePoint farms:

1. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 & SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 & SharePoint 2013 Server.

2. Windows Server 2012 Datacenter & SQL Server 2012 Enterprise & SharePoint 2013 Server.

On the first farm, I've managed to install, configure and deploy Workflow 2013 Platform.

On the Second farm and using the same steps in the first farm, I did not succeed.

Steps I've taken (Logged in as SP_Admin account):

1. I've created an "App Management" Service Application in SharePoint Central Administration. SP Account used for that was "SP_Admin". Then I made sure that the App Management SharePoint service and Windows Service are on.

2. I've downloaded Workflow Manager 1.0 from Microsoft website and I've installed:

Workflow Manager 1.0.

  • Service Bus 1.0.
  • And Workflow Client 1.0.

3. I've configured the workflow service using the configuration wizard at the end of the Workflow Manager setup. And I made sure that the ports that were used for HTTP, HTTPS, TCP connections, etc. Are open, I've made firewall rules for these ports to be allowed ingoing and outgoing bounds. And I've checked that they are open using PowerShell and the command "netstat -an". Configuration was completed 100% no errors.

4. Then I went to Windows services and made sure all the following services are set to automatic start and running:

  • Application Management.
  • Forefront Identity Manager Service.
  • Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service.
  • Service Bus Gateway.
  • Service Bus Message Broker.
  • Windows Fabric Host Service.
  • Workflow Manager Backend.

5. Then I went to SP Central Administration\Application Management\Manage Service Applications: And I checked that the "Workflow Service Application Proxy" is created and it's status is "Workflow is connected".

6. Then I went to my site collection home page, clicked site settings: then chose "Site Collection Features" and turned on all workflow related features.

7. I remained in the site collection site settings: then chose "Manage Site features" and I turned on all workflow related features.

8. Then I went to SharePoint Management Shell, ran it as an administrator and I registered the workflow service to my site collection using:

"Register-SPWorkflowService -SPSite 'https://sppc/sites/demo' -WorkflowHostUri 'http://sppc:12291' -AllowOAuthHttp -Force"

Workflow Host is : sppc. Workflow http port is 12291.

9. I created a list based workflow 2013 platform using SharePoint Designer 2013, a simple "Log on History" 1 stage workflow. I saved it and published it successfully to a custom list in the "demo" site collection.

I went back to my site collection, I started a new item in that custom list. After item creation I started my workflow and I got the error popup message:

"Something went wrong. To try again, reload the page and then start the workflow."

Steps I've tried to fix it:

1. Creating a new site collection and registering workflow service to it.

2. Reconfigure Workflow and Service bus with different ports.

3. Reinstalling Workflow Manager, Service Bus, and Workflow Client.

4. Removing Workflow Manager, Service Bus, Workflow Client, and Windows Fabric, and reinstalling them again.

But nothing worked. I apologize for the long post, but the amount of info here should be enough to stop the time-consuming back and forth questions about what I've done or tried etc.

PS: Workflow 2010 Platform is working well.

Thank you ahead.

What's the magic in the realm?

I'm reading about SAML token authentication.  It says, $realm = "urn:sharepoint:mysites"

Can a realm be "urn:mardukes:totalconfusion"?  That is to ask, are there magical values that have to met or is this just a string identifier?

Hello all,

After working with an existing SharePoint 2 tier installation for about a year (both functioning as WFE's and APP servers), I've been asked to implement 2013 in a slightly more complicated architecture (2 WFE's and 2 APP servers).  I didn't set this up and much of it's inherent functionality remains a mystery to me.

In all of my travels and all of the hours reading Technet and Google, two apparently simple concepts about SharePoint have eluded my comprehension...

1.  How does SharePoint differentiate between WFE's and APP servers?  I've never seen anything in SharePoint/Central Admin that says "deploy new web app listeners only to these servers (WFE's, presumably behind a load balancer...).  I've never seen any documentation explaining this or eluding to the concept of what a particular farm member will perform as a role (WFE, APP Server or both).

If you have 10 WFE’s and 10 APP servers and deploy a new web app in Central Admin, how does SharePoint know to create new IIS listeners on only the 10 WFE’s (behind load balancer...) and not the 10 APP servers?

2.  While it is apparent in Central Admin to start and stop "services on server" components on whatever farm members there are to distribute their load and create redundancy, there is no way to do the same for SharePoint's WCF Endpoints (Service Applications).  it appears to me that only one WCF Endpoint service application (pool) can exist in a farm and they appear to all end up on the same farm member.

When you create Service apps, they are implemented in an app pool that is not distributed among multiple servers, only one.

I've read the docs.  Architecture, install, operations, etc and I've never run across anything explaining the particulars of these two questions.  Where are these concepts explained?

Thoughts?/Thanks!

SharePoint 2013 with Office Web App 2013 - allow management of content type

Hi,

I've configured Office Web App 2013 with SharePoint 2013 and everything is working fine. When I click new document in document library, I can see flyout menu of "Word, Excel, Power etc" and can create/edit documents. However, when I go the library settings and change "Allow Management of Content Type" to true and then click the new document link in the document library, I get upload file option. I'm not sure if this is as designed or I've misconfigured something. Have anyone noticed this?

Thanks,

Hi,

I need to authenticate users from an external domain (AD), using a one way trust and people picker is this achievable with Sp 2013 using the default authentication method?

Potentially there could be a large amount of external domains, can I configure each site within a zone to authenticate from a different external domain.

Excel Services with SQL Server Always-On connections

$

Hi all,

I installed SharePoint 2013 with SQL Server 2012 and Always-On features (1 primary replica and 2 readonly secondaries replicas)

I wanted to test Excel Services with an Excel file that contains an connection configured to be redirected to on readonly replica. I configured Excel Services to trust my Excel File and my External Connection.

My Excel file is simple. A SQL Server request : SELECT @@SERVERNAME and a external data connection with the following parameters for Always-On Readonly redirection.

- Driver : SQL Server Native Client 11.0  /  ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly / Server=ListnerAAG

When I test the Excel file on a local computer no error occurs. When I shutdown a readonly replica the Excel connection is redirected to my other readonly replica by refreshing all the connections.

When I test the same Excel file in Excel Services, when I shutdown a readonly replica an error occurs by refreshing the connections. I must run the iisreset command and then when I refresh the connections it works.

In ULS I can see only this message (SQL Server Native Client 11 : communication link failure).

Is anyone experiencing the same type of problem ?

Sorry I'm not a SharePoint expert and if some information is missing please let me know.

Thanks in advance

SharePoint 2013 not working after installing language pack

I had a working SharePoint 2013 environment but then we had to install the language pack (Dutch) as we have multilanguage people in the company.

Our setup:

SharePoint 2013: OS Server 2012
SQL Server 2012: OS Server 2012

Language pack to install: Dutch

I installed it, all went fine, no exceptions, no errors. After the installment of the language pack (Dutch) it asks to run the Configuration Wizard again. So I did but it keeps failing on step 7 of 8.

The logfile shows:

Any help on this?

"About Me" in Settings takes a restricted user to the top site, which I do NOT want.

$

0

This may be the reverse to many people's problems, but it is critical to the success of our Access web app.

The scenario.

Created a subsite.

Created a user group which contributor rights.

Broke inheritance from the main site.

Added user "User1" to the contributor group on the subsite.

At this point, User1 logs in using the credentials provided and goes to the subsite, where about all the he can do is launch the web app.

User1 can't log directly into the main site, and is greeted with a page informing him he doesn't have permissions.

All good.

However, I now find that the user can click on "About Me" in his subsite and view his profile IN THE MAIN SITE. NOT good at all.

What am I missing? Is there a way to prevent this "end run"? It is crucial that the use see ONLY his assigned materials in the subsite.

I also note that clicking on "Sites" takes this supposedly restricted user to the top site. How do I remove this function as well?

Thanks for any insight and/or help.

Databases running in compatibility range (Bdc service)

$

Hi,

We recently migrated from Sharepoint 2010 Foundation to 2013 Foundation by following the articles on Technet. The content database was upgraded and the BDC database was moved over.

Last week we applied some Sharepoint 2013 updates through Windows Update. This triggered the warning "Databases running in compatibility range, upgrade recommended." in Central Admin. We successfully upgraded the WSS_Content database by running the "Upgrade-SPContentDatabase" cmdlet. We also ran the command "stsadm upgrade"

However the warning remains, stating:

"The following databases have versions that are older than the current SharePoint software, but are within the backwards compatible range:
Bdc_Service_DB_8794504acc11494e8b95358fa979bd07,"

How can I upgrade the Bdc service?

Cheers

List forms corrupted after upgrade to 2013

$

We upgraded from SharePoint 2010 to 2013. Most list forms, the ones from out of the box lists were corrupted so when we click on Add New Item or View Item we get an error. Sometimes it says list does not exist, sometimes it says "web parts page error" and so on. Also all customized list forms got corrupted as well.

I need to know if there is a fix for that because when we tried to revert to the original default we did not find those forms in the report. We tried to revert the list views to the default but that also didn't work.

Any advice is much appreciated.
