SharePoint version recommendations for upgrade to Sharepoint 2013

Hi,

Is there any least requirement for SharePoint 2010 SP or CU before upgrading to SharePoint 2013?

All I could find is:
"10. Make sure that the appropriate service pack or update is applied to your 2010 environment. If you are using remote blog storage (RBS) in your environment, you must be running Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Products in your environment before you start the upgrade process."

Thanks

Installing SharePoint CUs- Update Service Account Permissions before Patching?

$

Hello,

I have a client who experiences a lot of errors with SharePoint 2013 Production patching (cumulative updates). There are multiple reasons for this and I am currently in the process of trying to get the client to resolve those; for example, the Dev and QA environments are not parallel to the Prod environment even in terms of simple configurations. However this question is specifically about service account permissions, as my immediate goal is to convince the client of the necessity to get these in order.

Before each patch, my client is in the habit of asking the DBAs to give DBOwner and sometimes securityAdmin and DBCreator to every database in the farm to the Setup account, the Farm account, and the App Pool account. He says that patching fails if this is not done, and believes that building a new web application or host named site collection (and thus a new content database) between patches is causing the requirement for these permissions updates. He uses the Setup account for patching and Farm account for running the configuration wizard.

I don't recall having to do this for past patching, and don't believe it's necessary (or a good idea), but I'm willing to admit possible gaps in my knowledge. It's my position that this activity causes permissions creep, violates least privilege and masks some kind of underlying problem (probably with existing service account permissions).

Toward resolving this problem, I am compiling a list of the permissions that Setup, Farm and App pool ought to have (from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc678863(v=office.15).aspx ). I'd like to get permissions for his Setup, Farm and App Pool accounts matching those outlined in the article, and remove/avoid adding anything that isn't outlined there.

So I have the following questions. I believe I know the answer to many but want to make sure I'm making the right recommendations. If you can point me to any supporting material that would be helpful.

  • Is it correct to use Setup account for patching and Farm for configuration wizard?
  • Article states that setup "must have access to the SharePoint databases." What does this mean at a minimum?
  • Article states that the setup account needs "member of the db_owner role... If you use any Windows PowerShell operations that affect a database." Does setup need DBOwner on every database (for patching) on the grounds that configuration wizard is a PowerShell activity affecting a database? Seems not, partly because he uses Farm for configuration wizard.
  • If so, is it normal to need to re-apply this permission to every database via the DBAs before every patch?
  • Are the other permissions he wants to add necessary? Or are they a bad idea?
  • If all is configured correctly, shouldn't permissions remain sufficient for patching without permissions updates, even if new content databases have been recently built?
  • And if permissions updates are not necessary, any idea what underlying problems might be causing permissions failures during patching? I realize this question may require way more info but was just wondering if there are any obvious contenders to pursue.

For what it's worth, the SharePoint farm is running 2013 Enterprise, has 2 app servers, 2 web front ends, and one SQL server, SharePoint servers are on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, SQL is on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Restrict Which Users Can Enter Data In List Form in SharePoint Foundation 2013

Is there a way to restrict which users can enter data in particular fields in a list item entry form?

We are using a SharePoint Foundation 2013 list and calendar to manage vacation time. We need to restrict non-supervisor users users from entering a value in a certain field in the vacation request form.

Here is how the system works now:

1. Employees complete the vacation request form (which creates a list item)

2. An email is sent to their supervisor to either approve or decline the request

3. Approved requests are automatically entered onto the vacation calendar

We have restricted the list so that only supervisors can edit items (the pending vacation requests). The problem is that all users can mark their own requests as approved when they fill out the request form in the first place. Is there a way to restrict which users can enter data in particular fields on a list item entry form?

Hi,

We are coming up with requirements to report the modified dates on the items/documents in our SharePoint 2013 lists and libraries.  Does anybody know of a powershell command to accomplish the same which can be extracted onto a CSV?  Thanks in advance.

SharePoint 2013 - SharePoint App Management - SSL Wildcard Certificate

I have my App Management Service setup, I have a wildcard certificate for the testapps.com site, which is separate from my test.com site.  I have a separate IP address for my testapps.com with a site in IIS.  But I am getting a certificate error (The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address.)  It is using the certificate for test.com.  I am stuck and I've google my brains out trying to find an answer to my issue.  So I guess my questions is, how to I have my *.testapps.com site using the correct wildcard certificate?  Is there something I am missing in IIS?

Thanks

Authentication prompt appears when navigating across different host named site collections

$

We have created two host named site collections under the same sharepoint web application (Authentication provider is Claims based with NTLM)

HNSC site 1: http://site1.mydomain.com

HNSC site 2: http://site2.mydomain.com

When we try to navigate to site 1, windows authentication prompt appears, which is expected.

Site 1 provides a link to site 2.

On click of that link, again authentication prompt appears.

How to avoid the second authentication prompt?

The requirement is after being authenticated at one site, authentication prompt should not appear on navigating to other HNSC sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

WebDAV and Excel External References (Linked Cells)

$

I have the following use case:

Two Excel documents are stored in the same folder on a shared drive (a typical SMB Share). The workbooks are linked through a single linked cell. If you open both workbooks in the Excel client application and update the source cell, the destination cell is updated immediately. I would like to copy these workbooks to SharePoint library and maintain the linked cell functionality. There is no need for linked cells to work in Excel services.

In my testing, in SharePoint 2010, if you open both workbooks via HTTP by browsing to the library and selecting "Edit in Excel" from each workbooks context menu the links work because they refer to the relative locations of the workbook. If you open the folder in Explorer View (WebDAV), then open both workbooks the links are changed to absolute references and they stop updating in real time. The links will only update when you open the workbook. Once the links have been changed to absolute paths, they will not update in real time even if the documents are opened via HTTP.

On SharePoint 2013 the situation appears to change with the presence of One Drive for Business. If the library is included in One Drive, when you click open in Explorer it opens the local copy of the file (ex: %USERPROFILE%\SharePoint\Site - Excel Test\Book1.xlsx) and the links continue to work.

Can others confirm or deny this behavior in their environments? Can someone provide insight into the behavior or point me to a Microsoft resource that documents this behavior? I have seen the articles from Microsoft on Excel Services and Linked Workbooks however; I am opening the documents in the client application, not Excel services.

What happened to the "Send To" option

Hi,

The Edit menu in SharePoint 2010 had a "Send To" option that you could control.  I don't see this option in SharePoint 2013.  What happened to it?

Windows authentication failure on SharePoint 2013 zone

$

I am attempting to set up a Windows authentication zone in a SharePoint 2013 installation for use by the search crawler.  The zone has been configured to use NTLM in order to eliminate Kerberos from the equation.  The result of my attempts to access the Windows authentication zone is a 403 error.  Central Administration is working on the same server, and of course is using Windows authentication.

I know about the issue of using Windows authentication to localhost, and have configured the backconnectionhostnames entry in the registry.  To prove that I can use Windows authentication using the intended host name for the SharePoint zone, I have set up a test IIS site that binds to the host name used by the zone, and successfully authenticated using Windows authentication.

From monitoring the ULS logs it's obvious that I'm actually successfully completing Windows authentication, and getting a SharePoint claim, but from that point I'm being denied by SharePoint.  I do know that my Windows credentials has site collection administrator privileges.  The most interesting failure in the ULS log appears to be:

SPApplicationAuthenticationModule: Authorization header doesn't contain Bearer, can't try to perform application authentication.

Another odd thing is that after the ULS indicates I have failed authentication, I'm redirected to /_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx instead of the login page defined in web.config.  I have tried many things, including enabling Kernel-mode authentication.  Below is an excerpt from my ULS logs:

Configuration Failed - Error occurred while getting information about user...

I have had this error occur three times in a row now and cannot figure out what the issue is. I am installing Sharepoint 2013 on a Windows 2012 Server that I have first installed SQL Server 2012 on. SQL Server installs with no issues whatsoever. During the Sharepoint 2013 installation however, when I run the Configuration Wizard, after inputting all the information I receive the following error:

The database server name I use is the same name as the server I'm installing Sharepointtoo (lets say "spserver") so I enter it as "spserver.domain.edu" as the FQDN...the username is my username which is an admin account for machines in our Active Directory OU.

V

Values are automatically populated in this screen with the FQDN of the database server I entered previously (spserver.domain.edu) and of course the central administration address is the same except with the port used to access the central administration URL

When I go to the configuration log file specified in the first screen, information pertaining to this error is copied below:

Can anybody offer any assistance with this?

Thanks

Hello,

I have 4 farms spread across the world and I want to pull news from Farm 1 (headquarters) into farm 2, 3, and 4. In SharePoint 2007 I did this with content deployment by pushing only the news site out to the other 3 farms.  However, from reading content deployment guidelines in SP13 I feel this is no longer a supported configuration.

I am trying to use the search query web part to accomplish this now.  I have a search query web part that I am using to roll up articles from SharePoint at farm 1.  So far it is mostly working, the articles are pulled in and I can see them.  When I click the link it takes me from the current farm (farm 2) to farm 1 to read the article.  The only problem I am having is that the rollup image does not display at farm 2, 3, or 4.  I believe this is happening because the image URL at the source is getting saved as a relative URL.  Even if I try to override the relative URL to the image with an absolute URL then it just forces the URL back to a relative URL because clearly SharePoint is smarter than I am and there is no reason I should ever want an absolute URL.

I should add that to get this working, in my search settings, I had to configure an extra content source (to farm 1).

So my question is what is the best way to handle this?  Is there an option in my search configurations on farm 2 to override URL's for a particular content source?  Am I even headed down the right path trying to do this with the content search web part?

Thanks,

SharePoint 2013 SP1 running after November 2014 public updates PSCONFIG task upgradebootstrap has failed

SharePoint Server 2013 with the correct SP1 from the ISO installer, and installed using SP AutoInstaller.  No issue with the farm until after the SharePoint Public updates were overlooked when the platform team installed Windows Updates in the second week of November.

We noticed this when we tried to install PowerPivot tools on the farm, and received the error message that the farm needed upgrading before we could install these tools.

So we ran:

psconfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait
#which failed, and then tried:
psconfig.exe -cmd installcheck -noinstallcheck
#failed.

We then flushed the farm Cache on all the WFEs, APP servers and Central Admin, and tried again, still failed. We then tried to install the November 2014 CU, and ran PSCONFIG and the GUI both failed. Below is attached log for the PSCONFIG entry. The error happens on step 2, beginning at the:

Task upgradebootstrap has failed with an unknown exception

And states:
11/25/2014 22:05:55  13  ERR                  Task upgradebootstrap has failed with an unknown exception
11/25/2014 22:05:55  13  ERR                  Exception: Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException: Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPUpgradeException' was thrown.

Has anyone else encountered this and if so how did you fix it?

Hi

We tried to install PrerequisiteInstaller.exe for Sharepoint 2013 in Web Server, getting Application Server Role configuration error.

We tried with many options to resolve the issue but it failed.

Finally, we tried with Powershell script which is suggested in the below link to resolve it. But still error occurs.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2765260

Please give us solution at the earliest to resolve it as we have been facing this issue for the past one week and not able to install SharePoint 2013.

Thanks in Advance.

Cannot crawling - Object not found

I have had this crawling issue for a month. My crawling content is http://spsite. After a full crawling, no item was indexed and got a top level error of “Object not found” in the log.  If I change the crawling content to the server ip http://10.0.4.123, then couple thousand items were indexed. However, I cannot search content on the SharePoint site. If I open the browser on the server, I cannot openhttp://spsite or http://localhost. But I can open the site via the ip address http://10.0.4.123. I also can access thehttp://spsite from a remote pc. So I think the server seems has problem to access its root site collection other than using its IP. I have make sure a registry entry disableloopbackcheck= 1 has been added and the crawling account have full access to the site collection and the backend sql database. I also reset the index.

I have done lot research and tried lot different suggestions without any luck. I really appreciate if someone can help me out.

User Profile Sync - Fields That Appear Under the "Person or Group" Column

As I go to add a new column to a list on SharePoint 2010, I notice some fields under the drop down labeled "Show field". Inside that drop down there is a "Test" and a couple others I see in there that I don't notice in the User Profile Sync. Forgive me, I've inherited this SharePoint config. Where should I be looking to find these phantom fields or how can I erase them?

Thank you!

I don’t know what the problem is and is this problem related to new search center or not. any solution???
