User Profile and the Synchronization Services - Any better? Any new proper guide?

$

Hi,

I have SP 2013 installation. I need to get User Profile and User Profile Synchronization services up and running.

Just the thought of these two services makes me extremely unhappy due to the fact that they are VERY DIFFICULT to setup and configure.

My concerns with the Huge long articles by the great Spence Harbar are as follows:

- They are some years old.

- Also, He (Spence Harbar) has argued that using the UI is not recommended.

- Also, I have to provision the service as a Farm account, yet it is STRONGLY not recommended to logon as Farm Account.

Has the situation with these two services gotten any better really? Has anyone came up with updated and consolidated approach for setup and configure the services painlessly? Any new detailed and consistent blog posts with script for provisioning these services?

I would greatly and sincerely appreciate your inputs on this subject ! Please, Help me out !

PS: Using the direct import AD is not an option at all, that's why I must use the upper 2 services.

Modifying Site URL inside document

HI,

I have a site which contains several documents. These documents contain links to other documents within the same SharePoint site.

Now the site is to be migrated to a new site collection. Is it possible to update the URLs within the Word documents to the new site collection URL?

Is it possible to achieve using Powershell or any custom code is required?

How to achieve this?

Thanks

My Site Trusted Host Location (still 2010)

Can My Site site collection still be the 2010 flavor using SharePoint 2013 My Site Host.

A group of My Sites does not want to be upgraded, and remain SharePoint 2010.  Is it supported to setup a Trusted Host Location which points to the SharePoint 2010 Farm?

Is it supported for a SharePoint 2013 User Profile Service Application to use a SharePoint 2010 My Host Site Template?  I would think many things would break?

So the comprise would be to keep some My Site Site Collections in a SharePoint 2010 Farm as a Trusted Location.

Any thoughts...

Thanks in advance.

hi All,

We need FBA enable internet facing portal. both clients and internal employees need login from same https: URL. (https://client.domain.com/clientSiteCollection)

Is there a way we can disable internal employees login in from internet using windows authentication?

Is there a way we can allow direct login to internal employees while FBA page is only for internet users?

ADFS 3.0 Authentication Provider - not working...

$

I have seen a number of posts regarding the setup/config of ADFS3.0 and SharePoint 2013, of which I 'believe' to have followed to the letter - but.... I have an issue in that if I add the ADFS user account at the Site Collection level it will not work, and I get the 'The site hasn't been shared with you' access denied screen. If I use the SAME ADFS user account within the 'User Policy' level of the Web Application, they do authenticate to the site without issue?!?!?!?

So, to clarify, if the account is added to, say, the Site Visitors SharePoint Group, at Site Collection Level, it will not work, if the same account is give access from within Central Admin, at the Web App User Policy level, all is good... Well, not good because at this level we cant control the granular permissions within the Site...

This is using fully patched ADFS3, and SharePoint 2013 with SP1 and the July 2014 full CU...

From my view point the ADFS setup looks to be working, as I can use it to authenticate, but not at the level I want to.

Has anyone come across this issue at all please? Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Multilingual / Local Site Set up in SharePoint 2013 - Thoughts / Suggestions

Hello Experts

We are planning to deploy a site in multiple languages for example, authoring site will be authored in English in USA and translated version in French and German and few other languages will be created and will be available in their respective countries. Sounds good!

What we need to do is that we want to be able to post contents in local language on those country sites as well. So for example, English (source) will have some global content, all Global Content will be translated in multiple languages and create French Site and German Site etc.  We want admin in France to be able to edit part of the French site (below Global content or may be a new page) and post local contents i.e. related to France only and same thing with Germany site i.e. German admin can edit Germany version of site and post German content under global content or may be on other page in same site for German. When global contents are published it should not over write local content that were modified by the local admins. To make it easy to understand I try to create one Visio ,

Note:  I am not Visio expert, this is why it look like this.

Wanted to know if one has done anything like this? What is the best approach? Should we use one site collection and variations in it (everything in one site collection) or multiple site collections as shown?

Any help or guide lines/links you can share to start with will be great.

Thanks.

SharePoint 2013 - Audiences in Central Admin

Hi,

My UPS is functioning correctly and NetBIOSDomainNamesEnabled is set to true.

In certain circumstances, when setting up Audiences which use AD security groups, I receive zero members.

I receive zero members when the AD users are in a different OU than the AD security group. I.e. OU A contains Users, OU B contains the security group

If the users and the security group are in the same OU then the members appear in the audience. I.e. OU A contains both the users and security group.

Does anyone know why this is the case? I'm not sure whether it's by design or a configuration issue?

Regards

Chris

Why is MS Sharepoint 2013 so complicated to setup?

Hi.

I have tried to get Microsoft SharePoint 2013 running for a couple of weeks now without success.

First I installed it on an already existing Windiow Server 2012 computer, there was alot of problems to even run the install, The Preparation Tool setup gave some errors and when restarting it will just start over again. After ALOT of work it got running but the SharePoint itself did not work as expected, it gave exceptions when creating new website. If You are interested, look at this thread : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/9553f51b-2947-43c0-8370-009f6ffc2ab3/

I never got it to work even after days of work. So now I have got a new/fresh Windows Server 2012 computer, I have installed all the updates but I still have problems to install SharePoint 2013!? It demands me to run Microsoft SharePoint2013 Product Preparation Tool setup but when I do it ends with :

There was an error during installation : Aplication Server Role. Web Server(IIS) Role: configuration error

I have googled and found some possible problems but none worked. So what is wrong with MS Sharepoint 2013? Why so much problems just to set it up?

I have worked with other simular programs before and even if there might have been problems thay have been easy to solve for the most part but SharePoint 2013 just demands ALOT of time and even then it does not run as it should?

I am trying to install and configure SiteMailBox on SharePoint and when i execute the `.\Set-SiteMailboxConfig.ps1` i get the error :

>Get-SPAppPrincipal : The HTTP service located at
`http://app:32843/87f2cfd3c96f4130b4f269d7cae8d99b/AppMng.svc` is unavailable.
This could be because the service is too busy or because no endpoint was found
listening at the specified address. Please ensure that the address is correct
and try accessing the service again later.

I went to IIS Manager and i wanted to verify my SharePoint Web services status, so i wanted to browse to the `http://localhost:32843/Topology/topology.svc` and i got the http 503 error service unavailable... According to this thread http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/101550/sharepoint-web-services-web-site-error-service-unavailable-http-error-503-the-s

Can anyone suggest me how can i solve this probelm please ?or even some suggestions?

SharePoint 2013 Service Accounts

Hi All,

SharePoint Service Accounts are controlled by a vendor. Vendors are bit reluctant to assign multiple service accounts.

However, SharePoint requires a couple of service accounts and I sent them, minimum 3 service accounts for SharePoint

  1. sp_farm (Windows Timer Service, Central Admin and User Profile service)
  2. sp_sql (SQL Server Service account)
  3. sp_install (or sp_admin) ( for installing lay SharePoint binaries)

They are asking to install sp_farm account can used to install SharePoint.

I know its not correct, but can SP_FARM account used to install SharePoint server?

Q: What implications to server if I use SP_FARM account and not SP_Admin (SP_Install).

I always follow Todd blog http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=391

What advise should tell them as them manager the servers?

Thanks for your help.

SharePoint 2013: clicking on list item Workflows link returns error

$

I discovered that, after installing the August 2014 PU, that when users clicked on the Workflows link, on a list item popup, that an error was displayed rather than the Workflows page.  This was the error:

Method 'StartWorkFlowOnListUItem' in type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.WorkflowServices.FabricWorkflowInstanceProvider' from assembly 'Microsoft.SharePoint.WorkflowServices, Version=15.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c' does not have an implementation.

I don't know if this error manifested itself prior to this update, since I didn't check for it.  In any case, I then researched this error and found a TechNet posting that addressed exactly this issue: SharePoint Server SP1 installation- Error related to workflow.  According to this posting, the error is resolved by installing UpdateKB2880963.  So, I installed it on my development farm, which mirrors production.  Prior to installing the update, the Workflow Solutions Framework component build number was 15.0.4571.1502.

After installing KB2880963 on the WFE (there's only one, presently), clicking on the Workflows link returned this error:

File Not Found.

and the Workflow Solutions Framework component build number was 15.0.4615.1001.  I performed an IISreset, but this didn't resolve the error.  I ran the Products Configuration Wizard, but this also didn't resolve the problem.

I would be grateful if someone could present a solution or workaround: presently, my users do not have access to list Workflows pages.

These are the ULS entries for the error:

Hot-Standby/Disaster-Recovery SharePoint Farms - using Always On - how does the DR farm connect to the new Prmary

$

I understand how a planned/unplanned failover to the secondary replica within the Primary data centre would work. Users are still accessing the Primary farm but the farm is looking at a new Primary (sync)

What I don't understand is how this works if the Primary data centre (SP farm) goes down. Users then will be coming in through the DR SharePoint farm. I've read articles (see link) about how this works using log shipping - stopping the shipping and mounting the content DBs to SharePoint empty web apps etc.

But we are not using log shipping - we are using AOAGs - so my question is how do I present the secondary replica in the DR farm (async) to the DR SharePoint farm? Does it happen automatically? Do I have to do some configuration? etc

Many Thanks if you can help or point me to something

How to handle User Profile service when merge SP2010 farm to a SP2013 farm?

We have a SP2010 farm and a SP2013 farm. Both are resident in same domain and their User Profile Service are sync with the same Active Directory.

To save system resource, we decide to migrate SP2010 site collections to SP2013 farm. From my understanding, I need to migrate the UPS database and perform upgrade at SP2013. My questions are:

1. After upgrade the old UPS I will see two UPS applications in the same farm (e.g. UPS-old, UPS-new) and they can run parallel just fine?

2. Since both applications are sync with same AD, should I and can I merge them? How to do so? Thanks.

How to merge User Profile Service Applications

We have a SP 2010 farm with UPSA and some the users have edited their profile properties in that. We have planned to move the web application from SP 2010 farm to SP 2013 farm which already has a user profile service application in it.

Both the SP2010 and SP2013 farms are using same AD.

What we need after upgrading to SP 2013,

1. The edited user profile properties should be updated in the SP 2013 farm

2. SP 2013 farm should have only one UPSA.

Please help to migrate the UPSA from SP 2010 and merge with the existing 2013 UPSA.

Thanks
