Sign-in button not functioning

I have installed a Sharepoint 2013 Foundation environment in which I created a webapplication. I've configured (succesfully) FBA next to the AD authentication. Through extention I've created an extra website for the internet zone, and with AAM the correct URL is added. The "landing page" is enabled for anonymous users, with the intent that all subwebs are available when logged in to the main page.

The internet site is published through ISA2006 to the internet.

Using Internet Explorer 8 clients the login button is not functioning. It is the same on the internal and external website. It seems it is just a picture, not a webapplet. Using Mozilla Firefox or IE 9 it is functioning as desired. As a work-around people access a subweb directly, are prompted and can login. When they open the main page after login, they stay logged in and logout is available. Once logged out, the log in button seems disabled again. There are no "denies" in ISA.

For IE8 users therefor it seems the log in button is unavailable during the anonymous session.

Is there anything I can do to enable IE8 browsers to log in succesfully? Our company standard still is IE8 due to incompatibility of internal applications.
