Unable to connect to sp2013 - after enabling anonumous user and attempting to set the theme to publish for anonymous users

The site was working fine until :( I set up the anonymous user access and wanted to have the site theme for the anonymous users to be the same as logged in users. With SPD 2013 I checked out the master page and checked it back in to enable publishing of the theme for anonymous users. The master page was edited to allow the CSS page associated with the theme to be persistent (I thought). That did not work so I undid the edit. The site was working.  Then I did  a reboot after removing unneeded roles from the server (Windows 2012; SharePoint 2013) on a VMWare instance. The roles removed were WSUS: WDS: After every reboot I have to start many SharePoint services... In the past after starting the services the site comes up. Not this time. I have searched for solutions and I need your expertise. Thank you in advance.

After the reboot SharePoint 2013 throws Internal Server Error 500.  I enabled Failed Request Tracing and the log generated is:
