Sharepoint 2013 and authentication

Hi

I am looking for some help on how to plan  On a new sharepoint 2013 setup

Current setup is using oldest version on sharepoint

There are around 10000 users across more than 100 main subwebs. Most of these subwebs are using unique web permissions and using standard features such as lists, Document liraries.

This was running fine on a standalone server here  are few questions  I am looking at:

1) Microsoft recommends claims based authentication  for sharepoint now , is it secure and are there any restrictions/bugs when we cannot use Claim based authentication.

using Claim based authentication does this mean that we dont need any ACtive directory  based domain for w  web server and SQL servers.

are there any differences/complications  in backup process  if claim based authentications are used.

2) can we  create web applications/subwebs using a list  through powershell.
