MySite Documents setting custom permissions

I have a user that has loaded an excel spreadsheet to the Shared with Everyone folder in his MySite Documents library. I set myself as a site collection administrator on his MySite to be able to take a look.  The Shared with Everyone folder is set with read permissions for: spo-grid-all-users/56a085de-e-61f-48d1ab2a-3689a9fa5b45  As I understand it, at the very least that should be all internal domain users.  He then modified the permissions of the file itself to give Contribute rights to about half a dozen internal users.

Those users are reporting that they are unable to open the file when it is sent via a link in an email.  One has reported being asked for her login id and then to "save" the file... after which it doesn't open.  This happened to me as well, even with site collection admin permissions.  Another reported getting a really long snippet of code "mime-version: 1.0 date: Wed, 4 Dec 2013 13:55:19 -0500 x-mimeole:  ....."

I would have thought how he set up the permissions on the document should have worked.  Have tried to research but so far I'm coming up with nothing.  Really could use some help on this.  Thank you.
