SP 2013 - Using SQL Server Alias

Hello Community!

I have built a SharePoint 2013 Farm (Enterprise).  Now  I need to secure the farm's database.  So I have changed the default ports from 1433 to another port number, created an Inbound rule for the new port, and created a SQL Server Alias on the SharePoint Servers.  I've done all this IAW the two articles below:

http://4sysops.com/archives/sql-server-alias-and-sharepoint/

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sowmyancs/archive/2012/08/06/install-amp-configure-sharepoint-2013-with-sql-client-alias.aspx?Redirected=true

here's the problem, as you can probably guess, I can now not access the database from the SP servers.  Does anyone know what I have done wrong or what I am missing and if so please provide guidance and examples.

Thanks!

Tom
