SQL Server version confusion for SharePoint 2013 Enterprise

Greetings,

I'm attempting a new installation of SP 2013 Enterprise. The server is Windows 2012, running in a Hyper-V environment (1 virtual processor, 24576MB Ram). I've installed all the patches on Windows and SP that Windows Update will find and that are listed in the Technet installation pages. I've run the prerequisiteinstaller and the SP installer. I've got my setup user and farm account setup in AD, and the setup user added to the SQL server that will be hosting the databases.

When I run the Config Wizard I get "SQL server at ... has an unsupported version 10.50.1617.0. Please refer to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=23086" for information on the minimum required SQL Server versions and how to download them." I check the link, it says "The 64-bit edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1". I send that to our dba, and get back this info about the SQL server: "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1617.0 (X64) Apr 22 2011 19:23:43 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.0 <X64> (Build 6002: Service Pack 2)"

So, I'm confused. Looks like the SQL server is 2008 R2 SP2, with SP wanting 2008 R2 SP1. Shouldn't it work with SP2? How do I explain to the dba that I need an earlier version of SQL? Doesn't make sense to me? What is the version number SP is looking for?

Help!

Thanks much in advance.
