Posting Social Feeds Across Farms

I have 2 geographically separate SharePoint 2013 farms each with their own UPS.  Trusted MySite host locations and profile replication has been setup between the 2 farms.  Both farms exist within the same AD domain and are setup to import the same set of users.

I am having some issues when trying to post or retrieve activity feeds to users in the remote farm.

For example, when I try to mention a user in the remote farm I receive the error message "This couldn't be posted because we're having some issues at the moment.".   I'm also seeing the following in the ULS log,

Microsoft.Office.Server.Social.SPSocialFeedManager.CreatePost: System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.SPWebRequestExecutor.Execute()
at Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ClientRequest.ExecuteQueryToServer(ChunkStringBuilder sb)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Microfeed.SPMicrofeedStore.ExecutePendingOperationsInternal(Object __unused__)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Microfeed.SPMicrofeedStore.ExecutePendingOperations()
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Microfeed.SPMicrofeedStoreContextWrapper.Dispose(Boolean isDisposing)
at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.ScopedRequestSingleton.Dispose()
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Social.SPSocialFeedManager.<>c__DisplayClass48`1.<S2SInvoke>b__47()
at Microsoft.Office.Server.Social.SPSocialUtil.InvokeWithExceptionTranslation[T](ISocialOperationManager target, String name, Func`1 func)

I have tried adding in each farms UPS the service account running the other farms UPS with Full Control in both the Administrators and Permissions options however this does not resolve the issue.

Server to server authentication has not been setup between the 2 farms as it is my understanding that this is not required

"Web applications or application services that request resources from an application service on another farm do not require server-to-server authentication."http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj992595.aspx
