Alternate Access Mappings

I provisioned a web application using host header and port number as the URL as inhttp://server1:3294. It works fine. However, I would also like users to be able to access it using Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) as in http://server1.mycompany.com:3294

What do I need for this? Set up a new AAM or extend the existing web application. I am not comfortable setting up AAMs as I don't know when to use which zone. Any thoughts?
