Confusion of SharePoint 2013 Apps

Hi everyone,

I've spent much time reading many articles about the new SharePoint 2013 Apps model and know fundamentally the following options:

  • Provider-hosted
  • Auto-hosted
  • SharePoint-hosted

Using the provider-hosted option, my app is hosted on a separate server in my company or in a server hosted in somewhere. Using the auto-hosted option, app is hosted in the cloud and Windows Azure and SQL Server Azure components are provisioned automatically when an app is installed. In my case, I'm a bit confused and have two questions:

  1. I want to develop a SharePoint 2013 app but also need to utilize Azure service (e.g Azure Media service) so I'm wondering which of the above options I have to use.
  2. If a user installs my app to his company, does that require his SharePoint server always connect to the Internet to interact with Azure Media service, for example?

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Regards,
-T.s
