Sharepoint 2013 - What is the proper way to create a web application hosted on the WFE of a 3-tier farm?

I recently had the pleasure of installing a 3-tier SharePoint 2013 farm and I am a little confused about the proper way to create the web application so that users get to it through the web front end.

In this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee806885.aspx  Create a claims based web application

Step 10 states the following:

In the Public URL section, type the URL for the domain name for all sites that users will access in this web application. This URL will be used as the base URL in links that are shown on pages within the web application. The default URL is the current server name and port, and it is automatically updated to reflect the current SSL, host header, and port number settings on the page. If you deploy SharePoint 2013 behind a load balancer or proxy server, then this URL may need to be different than the SSL, host header, and port settings on this page.

The Zone value is automatically set to Default for a new web application. You can change the zone when you extend a web application.

This is what I did. In the public url section I entered the web front end server name for the URL. This seems to be working.

Was this the proper way to do it?  Or, should I have accepted the default (which in this case was the url for my APP server) and then followed the instructions, 'Extend a claims based web application?'

If I did that, I would have the web application both on the WFE and the APP server which I don't think is what I want.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
