Can't provision security to old domain users

We have a SharePoint 2013 environment installed on a new domain.  The old domain is still in process of migrating users to the new domain so we need to use both.  Both domains are trusted on a TWO WAY trust.

When we provision security to old domain users, SharePoint handles that fine.  However it is when we provision global security groups from the old domain that we get the following error:

Sorry something went wrong.
The user does not exist or is not unique.

The logs don't say very much else.  And the group we are trying to provision IS IN FACT unique between both domains.  And of course it exists.  Normally if this was a one way trust scenario I would run:

STSADM.exe -o setapppassword -password key

and then...

STSADM.exe -o setproperty -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests -pv  domain:DnsName,user,password-url <url>

But this is a two way trust scenario AND there seems to be no issue resolving permissions for users - just groups.

Has anyone seen this or have a remedy?  Can't find anything out there specific to this.
