MYSite Integration with Main Site

When I built my first test environment I stood up two sites:

Primary site based on the Team site template named portal.mycompany.local

MySite based on the mysite template named mysite.mycompany.local

One of the things we noticed was that MAC users would need to logon once when they went to the portal, and again when they used their MySite area. Windows users were unaffected because IE would automatically log them into both masking the issue.

I guess I assumed that once you were logged into one site, you would automatically get logged into the other site. Am I doing something wrong, or is this an expected behavior. Is the decision to stand up mysite as a separate host name the correct way to do this, or is their a better way? We want to have separate databases for MySite and the main portal just to keep the data usage down. As long as the two sites use different databases, we are not to concerned about the naming convention of the mysite web site.
