WFE server configuration 101

Hi all-

I am in the middle of setting up my first-ever SharePoint 2013 deployment in a lab environment.  I currently have 3 Windows Server 2012 R2 VMs running on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.  The servers are:

SQL1 - for hosting of my various SharePoint-related SQL databases

SP1DEV - for hosting Central Admin and apps

SP2DEV - for hosting my web front end.

I started by installing SP2013 to SP1DEV.  I have been developing some content for the last couple of weeks.  Now, following Microsoft's recommended three tier approach, I am looking to deploy my first WFE server.  I installed SP2013 on SP2DEV (my WFE target server) and successfully added it to the existing farm.

After installation, however, I can't seem to find much documentation on CONFIGURING the server to act as the WFE.  Can someone please steer me in the right direction?

Also, most of the docs I have seen point toward using TWO WFE servers for load balancing and such.  Is this really necessary in a small deployment of 50ish users + minimal Internet access?

Thanks
