Error: Syncronization operation of the search component

I am running sharepoint 2013.    Any Search results in "No results found"      In the ULS viewer I see many errors similar to the following:

The synchronization operation of the search component: 3fec4bd1-67bc-496a-9b02-79f13e272a5d-crawl-0 associated to the search application: Search Service Application on server: SERVERNAME has failed. The component version is not compatible with the search database: Search_Service_Application_LinksStoreDB_8a58edf433aa420995be0f08317d75d8 on server: SQLSERVERNAME. The possible cause for this failure is The database schema version is less than the minimum backwards compatibility schema version that is supported for this component. To resolve this problem upgrade this database..

What is puzzling me is this error: "To resolve this problem upgrade this database.."    This was something I thought occurred only in sharepoint 2010.

Using the same process that I would use in 2010 I see the following:

PS> (get-spserver $enV:computername).NeedsUpgrade
False

I wasn't aware there was an upgrade option for 2013.   Do I need to run something like:

"psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures"

This issue can be replicated whenever a user tries a search so this must be the culprit of the "No results" messages.

Any thoughts on this?
