Sharepoint 2013 - Options for large files over WAN - Improve first upload

Hi,

I have setup a sharepoint 2013 server that users access accross a WAN. They upload documents to a document library and then will work with those documents in future; reading, editing, saving.

Currently I have tried Branch Cache, WAN Optimisation and SkyDrive Pro solutions.

  • Branch Cache works well after the file has been downloaded before and speeds up reading times
  • WAN optimization compresses, caches and traffic optimises
  • SkyDrive Pro - Works OK but relies on the client computer syncing the file over time to the server

However, the inital document upload performance cannot be improved. The time taken to initally upload a document to sharepoint is directly affected by the speed of the WAN link between each site.

I need to understand what other options are available to improve inital document upload.

Is it possible to store documents on a file server locally and the Sharepoint 2013 server references via links to their location in the webapp? Like a shortcut and redirection...

Is a distributed farm the solution? If so, how would this work?

I really need to understand what other options exist to solve the upload problem.

Ideally I would just like to have the one central server as this simplifies the environment, but I know that this may not be possible.

Thanks for the assistance.
