Pointing SharePoint to a new instance of SQL without using an alias

$

Hello!

I'm moving my MOSS2007 installation to a new SQL instance (all on the same server). I've already detached and moved the database tables to the new server, and I'm ready to point SharePoint to the new SQL instance.

However, everything I've found on TechNet tells me to create an alias to the new SQL database and that seems more like a workaround than a solution. Isn'[t there some way to simple point sharepoint to the new SQL server?

Thanks!

Tom

Hello

I've wanted to restore a a backup via Central administration on a WSSS 3.0 farm with a single machine that hosts the DB, front-end and an instance of tghe MS Search Server Express. Just before that Search Server Express had been uninstalled and reinstalled due to update problems. After uninstall psconfig has been run successfiully.

When restoring a backup with option "new" (as a new web app) on web app level I get this message at the log:

Has anyone an idea what one can do in order to create a new web app with this backup?

The message is the same as before uninstallation of Search Server Express as I've first thought SSE has wrecked the installation, but nothing has changed with the reinstallation of SSE.

PS: Trying to run the Sharepoint intsllation assistent on this farm actually fails in step 8 of 9 with this log message:Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException:

"Hidden" option not working in Word 2003 Web File Properties

I am using SharePoint 2007 with Word 2003.  I created a few fields (columns), added them to the appropriate content type and set 2 or the 3 columns to be Hidden (they are not required).  However, whenever I create a new doc based on the content type (using Word 2003), all 3 fields are displayed in the Web File Properties.

Why?  How do I fix this?

Timer jobs not executing in one server

Hi ,

We are having an issue in one of our sharepoint server -

Timer service hung and was not able to restart.

Event log says that the service account lost the log in as service permission

it has been provided to the account and the timer service started successfully

after which we found Central admin service is in "Stopping" status in the same server (CA->operations->services on server).

used stsadm -o privisionservice... command to stop and start the service

CA service stopped and started successfully

server rebooted after the service started

stsadm -o execadmsvcjobs to start the pending timer jobs but we did not able to start the timer jobs in this server.

solutions which we deploy globally on the farm is not hitting this server. except this server the solutions deployed successfully in all other servers.

Timer jobs working fine in all the other servers except this one.

Any clue / help / guidance on this issue .

Thanks

Timer job initialized 0%

Had a customer that had WSS v3.0 installed on an SBS 2003 box (side by side install) that used SQL Express 2005. They ran into the 4GB database limit so I installed a fresh copy of WSS v3.0 on a second server using a host header they have in their environment (a terminal server) and detached the database and reattached on the new server. Changed the DNS and the client could access the the new WSS site like they could the old one.

However, there is an issue. When they go and try and set an alert, after pressing the OK button the browser simply seems to be loading i.e. the page does not change. If I close the browser and examine the alert set set for that area I see an alert has been created yet no email is received.

Outgoing emails point to the SBS box (where Exchange is loaded) and I can telnet there and run an SMTP session fine.

When I open Central Admin and Look in Operations | Timer Job Status I see Timer Job initializing 0%.

So I tried:

stsadm -o updatealerttemplates

resetting the cache

stsadm -o setproperty -pn alerts-enabled

stsadm -o setproperty -pn jobs-immediate

and nothing makes a difference.

Interestingly, if I change the default zone in the Alternate Access Mapping to the name of the server rather than the DNS name The timer service seems to run successfully although no alerts seem to still be emailed. If I do this however the crawling of search fails and search does work. When I return the mappings back so the DNS name is the default search works but the Time Service gets stuck at 0% again.

I have rebooted the server and am still seeing the same issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I can try? It seems to have something to do with the name of the server and DNS name.

Thanks

Where can I find a resource in the Seattle area for a Tier 3 SharePoint job? Installation and configuration at server level, multi-server farm scenarios, service application configuration, web application/site collection creation and maintenance

I am helping Microsoft with a need they have for a contract resource.  Any idea where I can find people for a role such as this? If you have any ideas, please let me know.

SharePoint Tier 3 Operations Engineer – Long Term V- Contract at Microsoft (Redmond, WA)

(Sharepoint, SQL, IIS, Windows Server, .NET)

Team summary:

The team hosts all custom SharePoint solutions with internal MS orgs, working on things like MSW, ITWeb, FinWeb.  The team hosts, sustains and is responsible for any change/release management, making sure that all the solutions are compatible with the latest versions of SharePoint. Team is 24x7 support. They don’t work with the Global Helpdesk (meaning they manage all their own support).  They are present in Redmond and China.

Role:

Tier III Operations Support: Tech troubleshooting, deployments, patching (IIS, Windows Server, SQL, .NET, networking and Sharepoint 2010).

A Tier III Operations role involves being able to discuss the planning around custom SharePoint environment implementations, maintenance, upgrades and, when necessary, decommissioning. This would involve a familiarity with IIS, Windows Server, SQL, the .Net Framework, Networking and of course SharePoint 2010 (at a minimum; knowledge of previous versions of SharePoint is also desirable). Experience with installation and configuration at the server level, multi-server farm scenarios, service application configuration as well as web application/site collection creation and maintenance, permissioning, performance and load-balancing within a farm are also desired. Hands-on experience is vital.

In addition to building and maintaining server farms, a candidate should have the ability to troubleshoot issues, the capacity to multi-task, and good documentation skills. They must be able to handle a variety of issues, and assist the Tier II team in their day-to-day work. Flexible work hours are sometimes required and an ability to be self-motivated and responsible for a high-availability property, as well as collaborating in a team environment. Scripting skills are a plus.

You can reach me at msilver@invisocorp.com or v-masilv@microsoft.com

Cheers!

Upgrade MOSS 2007 Farm from Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 to Windows Server 2008 R2

$

We have a MOSS 2007 Farm made up of 3 servers (2 Web Front End's and 1 Admin server) currently running on Windows Server 2003 R2 x64. We plan to upgrade from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010 later down the road but first need to get the current MOSS 2007 farm running on Windows Server 2008 R2.

I haven't found any real clear documentation on that scenario. I've found installing MOSS 2007 onto Windows Server 2008 but not much describing best practices, gotchas, etc. for upgrading an existing MOSS 2007 currently running on Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2 (while remaining on MOSS 2007 for the time being -- just getting the OS upgraded first) AND using the same hardware.

Any advice or links to resources would be appreciated.

When users try to open an excel document that rersides in WSS 2.0 they receive the following error message.

"A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. "

I followed the steps in Microsoft Article 416351 at the link below and the error still occurs.

Setting a Major Version Limit on a Library With a Large Number of Items Causes System to Become Unresponsive When An Item Is Updated

I had a document library with unlimited versioning enabled and frequent updates to a couple documents.  In the interest of better space management I set the Major Version Limit to 25.  There were 250 versions of one 13 mb document.  When the first update to that document occurred this morning, the system became unresponsive for all users for a number of minutes until all current users recieved the ever helpful "An error has occurred" page.

During the unresponsive period there was no significant resource usage on the front end server or database server.  CPU below 10% and no paging on both servers.

I "successfully' recreated the condition on my test server which has a recent copy of the production data.

There are no relevaant Application or System Event Log entries on any production or test servers.

Environment:

64 Bit Server 2003 R2

MOSS 2007 SP3 [Microsoft.SharePoint.DLL version 12.0.6608.1000]

SQL 2008 19.0.5500

Unable to create SharePoint list from Excel

Hello.

When trying to import an Excel file into SharePoint I get the following error message:
Method 'post' of object 'iowspostdata' failed

Every solution i´v reed tells me to change the EXPTOOWS.XLA
Researching on-line it says to add a piece of code and comment out another piece of code.
That lines doesn't exist in my EXPTOOWS.xla.

(and i found the file  EXPTOOWS.XLA in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\1053)

The Code in my EXPTOOWS.XLA look likes this:

Function PublishToOWS(List, Title, URL, QuickLaunch) As Variant
    On Error GoTo PublishToOWS_ErrHandling
    publishForm.Initialize List, Title, URL, QuickLaunch
    publishForm.Show

    If publishForm.returnCode.Caption = "0" Then
        PublishToOWS = 0
    Else
        PublishToOWS = publishForm.returnCode.Caption
    End If

    Exit Function
PublishToOWS_ErrHandling:
MsgBox Err.Description, vbOKOnly, publishForm.Caption ' Handle other situations here....
    Resume Next
End Function

I really hope that someone can help me with this.

Inconsistent State for Content Database

$

Hi. I received 3 content Databases and one of the databases has a site collection that is apparently corrupt.  Someone may have tried to delete the site collection and maybe it didn't delete all the way or who knows. I need to be able to delete the site collection and move the other site collections in that DB. There are 26 of them.  However when attempting to do anything with any of the site collections in that DB I get HResult Errors.  When I click on the site collection in Central Administration,  it's listed but none of the details are displayed.  Here are some actions I tried to perform:

  • When you click on the site collection in Central Admin, nothing gets displayed
  • When you try and delete it, you can’t
  • When you try and run an stsadm migrateuser command on any person that’s associated with the siteID, you can’t
  • When you try and delete any other site collection in that DB, you can’t
  • When you run stsadm databaserepair, no orphans show up.

I took at look at the data in the content DB and the site id seems to flow properly all through the tables. It's listed in the Sitemap in the config DB as well as the sites and web tables. When I try to run a command such as migrateuser on a user who's associated with that siteid in the userinfo table I get "There is no Web named "/sites/Sitename". I can clearly see it though in the webs table!  I've been looking at this now for 3 days and I'm stumped. Anyone have any ideas?  I'm running SharePoint 2007 Office server with the August 2010 CU Patch. Sql 2008 R2 is the backend.

SharePoint Team Site with access for both Internal AD Users and External Non Ad Users (But not anonomous users)

$

I think the title says it all but what I m trying to achieve is that I have a team site that needs to be used by both intenal AD users and external Non AD Users. If the site is accessed internally then the users AD details are automatically used but if the site is accessed externally by non ad users then the user will be prompted for a non AD username and password. However the internally AD users should still be able to access the site externally using their AD credentials

Hope that makes sense.

Could some one point me in the right direction :)

Thanks

Paul
